Got some questions about my Amiga. Vintage computing/computers general while we're at it.

I picked this up a while ago. I want to refurbish it to a much more usable form.

> What I've done so far:
-bought original power supply and mouse
-removed faulty RAM expansion that it arrived with
-replaced the broken floppy drive with a working one

I know I'll need a new RAM expansion for some software, and I definitely want to clean + de-yellow it. I have some questions for /vr/ though:

What software do people recommend outside of the common/multi-platform releases? Also, perhaps someone could help me diagnose this issue: I launch 'Another World' (Out of this World in the US) and it boots to the code wheen screen just fine, but then refuses to take my inputs. I asked on another forum and they said this was likely due to a lack of RAM. Is this a likely cause? If so, how can I check what games require extra RAM, for future reference?

Any other suggestions for how I should refurb it/what software I should buy/what else I can do with it?
>>
>>4185757
What kind of input are you using? Do you use a proper atari db9-compatible controler?
>>
>>4185803
Don't currently have a compatible controller. The game is compatible with kb+m, if that's what you're referring to.
>>
>>4185807
Ah okay.
I never played to another world on the amiga (only snes), but with the exception of a few games, all the games I've played on my amiga required a controller.
>>
>>4185757
>VINTAGE
There are NO vintage computers. It's either called retro or old.
Stop taking hints for dumbass resellers.
>>
>>4185757
Using an Amiga 500 is pretty limiting.
You either use real floppies with a chipRAM expansion, which is fun but bothersome. A Gotek floppy emulator with a chipRAM expansion, which is probably even more bothersome or a accelerator/expansion with a CF card or ATA+CF card adapter , WHDLoad and chipRAM expansion, probably the most convenient. IMO.

You also won't be able to play ECS and AGA games.

You should have gotten a modified ATX power supply, original Commodore power supplies are always finicky at best.

Here you can search for games, you can search for OCS.

If you want to refurbish it to a "much more usable" form, get a Vampire 500 V2+.
>>
>>4187168
Why is using it with just a chipRAM expansion 'bothersome'?

Thanks for the links. My PSU works just fine for now but I'll look into an ATX if it goes into decline.

How come I can't play ECS/AGA games, is it just the limits of the 500 hardware?
>>
>>4187182
The Amiga 500 chipset is OCS (the original one). Later on the ECS chipset came out, then the AGA chipset. AGA games require at least the AGA chipset, which the Amiga 500 doesn't have.
>>
>>4187190
Ah, I see it's on the 1200 which I guess most people have, thanks.

That's fine for me anyway. I don't mind not being able to play the entire library, I was just lucky enough to get the 500 for a good price.
>>
>>4187182
>Why is using it with just a chipRAM expansion 'bothersome'?
I think you should read the post again, chipRAM is with everything, even the WHLoad one. It's mandatory to even unlock some of the library.
>>
>>4187182
>Why is using it with just a chipRAM expansion 'bothersome'?
To clarify, it was about the media type you're going to play games on, not chipRAM, chipRAM is a must in any case.
>>
>>4185757
>any tips guys?
yes, get a vampire 500
>>
>>4187210
For someone without much Amiga or tech knowledge, the Vampire might actually not be that great of an option.

The 500 itself is pretty much only good for playing games of floppies only for someone without much Amiga or tech knowledge.
Something like an Amiga 600 with a chipRAM expansion and a fastRAM expansion in the PCMCIA slot with a CF card poking out from the side would probably be the best option for a dummy.
>>
>>4187195
>I was just lucky enough to get the 500 for a good price.
how much? also you said you bought a power supply and mouse separately

an amiga 500 with power supply, mouse and joystick usually goes for 50€ already, at least in europe
>>
>>4187225
It's been a while now, but I think it came to a bit less than that overall.
>>
>>4187190

Later A500s came with ECS, and there were ECS upgrades available by roughly '88 or so -- source: I got one in my A500.
>>
>>4187182

your PSU is fine. Get a gotek and then you can all the games you want apart from AGA,
>>
>>4187195

No...There is not such thing as "ECS" games. Any game made for the 500+ or 600 will work on your 500 as long as you have enough RAM.
>>
>>4188465

infact your Amiga is the most compatible and will all games earlier than AGA.
>>
>>4188471

*play
>>
OP here. At minimum I think it'll be best to get a RAM upgrade, but I'm not familiar with the different types. What sort of RAM (chip, fast/slow, ???) would I need just to run a few more games (e.g. I want to play Another World, which needs 1MiB)?
>>
>>4188465
>There is not such thing as "ECS" games

Not true, many games will require the 512k chipram that ECS allows, and won't work on an OCS machine. (OTOH there are a few early games that won't work with 512k chipram.)
Most games of the era had a fallback mode for OCS machines, which would do stuff like disable some sound effects or whatever. (F/A 18 Interceptor had the OCS and ECS modes, for one)

>>4188516

A belly slot ram upgrade is probably the biggest deal for running A500 stuff. Getting to 1M gives you the most options.

>>
>>4188465
There are. Gloom Deluxe for example. One of many.

OCS games are compatible with ECS, but ECS games are not compatible with OCS.
OCS and ECS games are compatible with AGA, AGA games are not compatible with ECS or OCS.
>>
>>4189129
I think people are confusing it ECS games that ran on OCS machines, just with less detail, sound, graphics, etc.
>>
>>4188689
>>4188706
OCS games run on 512KB or 1MB.
You're confusing something here.

ECS games required at least 1MB or 2MB:
>>
>>4189135

Probably, I'm operating on 30 year old memories and about five hours of sleep.
>>
>>4189124
>i know you are but what am i
>>
>>4189129

>OCS and ECS games are compatible with AGA

Wrong. You cannot play a lot of OCS games on a standard AGA machine without the use of relokick or some such.
>>
>>4189129

Gloom is AGA not ECS.
>>
>>4189412
>Wrong
They are compatible. AGA still has all the older hardware registers at the same adresses and just added new ones. What causes incompatibilities are newer kickstart ROMs, not the chipset itself.
>>
>>4189412
That has nothing to do with OCS/ECS or AGA. It's all in the ROM.

WHDLoad has no problems with playing OCS games on AGA machine.

People had ROM switches back in the day for AGA machine to switch to Kickstart 1.3.
>>
>>4189415
Gloom is. Gloom Deluxe isn't.
Do you even fucking Amiga?
>>
>>4188702
That would be a totally cool world where language didn't mean shit. Right?
Who cares Vintage means 100 years or older, fuck those people who wrote it's definition.

They're not, it's just you.
>>
>>4189914
The cool world was where people used actual dictionaries instead of pulling definitions out of their ass. Unfortunately millennials can't use a dictionary any better than they can add numbers in their head.
>>
>>4189914
>Who cares Vintage means 100 years or older

According to who? Antique dealers commonly classify anything between 50 and 100 years old as "vintage" and anything 100 years old or older as "antique." If you're aware of some other specialist jargon that uses the definition of "vintage" that you're claiming then you should probably cite it, because right now it looks like you don't know what you're talking about and are being stupidly aggressive about it to boot.
>>
>>4189914
The only thing worse than a prescriptivist is a prescriptivist who pulls things out of their ass
>>
>>4190116
>people not knowing shit about Amiga models or chipsets
>it's just you bro
>>
>>4185757
>Vintage Computing
What vintage are we talking about? 80's?
If you're going to use vintage you have to be specific. I don't think you wanted to be that specific here, why did you say so then?

>>4189914
>>4190460
>>4190587
Vintage is used with a particular era, always. It comes from winemaking.
Antique must be at least 100 years old. Always has.
Retro is as loose as it gets, more personal definition for "old" shit.
>>
>>4189898

That's why I said "standard AGA machine" numbnuts.

As standard (which was most of them) they couldn't play all OCS on AGA. What's hard to understand?
>>
>>4191384
This is relevant these days, how? When we have had WHDLoad since the mid 90's.
>>
>>4189412
>>4191384
but OCS/ECS games are compatible with AGA
exactly how he said

you started sperging out about the ROM here
he didn't say "OCS/ECS games are compatible with kick31" so why even bring it up?

it's like saying "cars can't drive over rope bridges" when someone posts a valid statement like "cars can transport people" or some shit analogy like that
>>
>>4187210
what's that?
>>
why do these threads always die out right away?
>>
>>4195357

That... doesn't make any sense.
But I think I agree with the general thrust of what you're saying: stubborn shitposters have taught most folks to avoid Amiga threads.
>>
>>4195580
on average they are probably just early 20's american or european
>>
>>4195357
This doesn't make sense though, most of the sites traffic is from America and most of people with Amiga interest are from Europe, when you even this out
>>
>>4189907
I'm guessing they wanted to broaden compatibility for Amiga 2000/3000 owners?
>>
>>4195789
Even a 600 with a 68020 runs it fine
>>
>>4197707
Fuck off you dumb yuropoor
>>
>>4198478
>Try harder.
I don't have to, you will shitpost no matter what I say.
>>
>>4185757
Why do you want a A500?
>>
>>4199854
This, usually people get an an AGA machine and then a OCS one for nostalgia/collecting
>>
>>4199857
Exactly.
>>
>>4196067
A 600 with a '020 runs even Doom fine
>>
>>4199854
>>4199857
>be /vr/ fag
>hear amiga is cool
>buy the shittiest cheapest amiga 500 without any expansions
>only with one button joystick and old data rotten floppies and no mouse
>almost nothing works
>what works is slow
>half of the survived games are shit games
>get pissed off
>commence "Amiga sucks / Why do people like Amiga" threads on /vr/
>>
>>4200537

That might explain a lot of it.
>>
>>4200878
I won't be surprised
