S&S is quiet doable without save states. Once you realize that all the maps are 16x16, even the ones that warp around, you can make your own maps easily enough with standard graph paper. None of the riddles are too difficult to figure out either. And there's only like one place that can trap you forever and the game does fucking warn you about it.

How the FUCK am I supposed to know you're meant to throw mechakoopas upwards? They don't communicate this at any point in the entire game.
>>
>>4183948
Oh, in that case, yeah I fucking agree. A password for each of your characters and a game password for your progress. I fucked up one character on my game password once and lost a good chunk of progress. I vowed from then on to make sure I write my shit clearly and double check each character twice. Should've learned my lesson from Metriod, but that wasn't as punishing a loss and was still only one pasword.

THIS fuckin game was the most frustrating one from back then. Pretty much the only PC game I actually had time to get into.
Except Doom and Wolfenshteen, of course.
>>

There were two separate versions of the game developed for the NES. The first port was handled and published by Jaleco only in Japan. Released on June 23, 1988, it featured characters redrawn in a cute art style and generally shrunken rooms. No scrolling is present, leading to rooms larger than a single screen to be displayed via flip-screens. Many of the background details are missing, and instead of a save feature an over 100 character long password is required to save progress.[31]

Rygar

Actually it's not impossible, just not recommended. I don't recall it having permadeath, but it's probably longer than what most people could comfortably sit through for a play session unless you've already beat it a few times and know what you're doing.

And not to mention there's two versions of THIS version. One with hamster-nuking, one sans.
>>
>>4185310
I don't remember, but if you play MM on the computer in his room in DotT, can you microwave his hamster in that version, and if you can, does he react to it in the main game? Because that would be am awesome Easter Egg if they programed that in.

This is a great port of Doom on the PSX.
But it's fucking retarded that it doesn't use the memory card for saves, and gives you a code for the level instead. No way to save collected weapons when you die. And you start the level over with only the pistol.
And no analog movement either.
>>
>>4186948

My girlfriend LOVES ps1 doom. No matter how many times I try to get her to play it on pc, she always goes back to playing that fucking version.
I dont get it. The only thing I genuinely think is good about that port is the music.
>>
>>4186620

American version has it,
European version doesn't

I've heard/read people claim that there is a censored American version without the hamster-nuke and that is absolutely false.
>>
>>4184101
Eh its an adventure game though, you can always just click around like a monkey and eventually you'll get somewhere

I play this with zsnes. No password system, no saves, no nothing apparently, so the only way to advance while also having a job is to use save states.

That's probably the worst console port of Doom.

GBA Doom is pretty good though :)

For some reason it doesn't like DOS emulators.

How it should be you filthy casual. Never played Doom on PSX but forced pistol starts have me intrigued
>>
>>4190007
Use DOSbox, or change the settings that could make it run Doom... Or use alternative methods like a launcher.
>>
>>4190007
Your PC can't run Dosbox?

Well, the best way to play Doom in 2017 is through a source port like PrBoom or ZDoom.

That puts it in the top 1% of pnc
People tend to forget just how god awful the entire genre was before Lucasarts saved it

Shinobi , even level select wont save you, you lose all health upgrades, weapon upgrades when you die. Making the last level near impossible.

>>4186948
Uh, all Doom levels are designed to be beatable from pistol start. In fact, if I recall, didn't original shareware Doom didn't have weapon collection either or something?
>>
>>4190007
Use a sourceport. It's as easy as typing "GZDoom" into google, downloading it, and selecting the WAD file for Doom in the launcher.

Boom, no emulators necessary.

Can I just chuck all the WADs in the same folder or can I only have one in there at a time?

>>

A lot of people here try to talk shit on it, but seriously consider playing the Brutal Doom mod. It breathes new life in the game without changing any of the core aspects that made it fun initially.
>>
>>4193801

Get the Smooth Doom mod for extra animation frames.
>>
>>4183913
? I beat it on a real NES when I was like 7. Not even a Game Genie.
