Why in the fuck is minsc considered a ranger? Has anyone in the history of BG ever used a god damn bow on him? Also how does his lore even fit him being a ranger.

Can someone explain to someone who's never seriously played a fallout game (aside from dicking around in 3 and new vegas) what's so great about Fo2? I wanted to play it, but couldn't get past the beginning part, the fighting is so fucking clunky, does the fighting stay that clunky? I wish it was more like BG's battle system.

but anyways, whats the appeal? Why is it considered one of the best CRPGs?

Too bad we're not allowed to discuss true retro CRPGs like ToEE here
>>
>>4182270
Because the men of Rashemen are woodsy barbarians and Minsc has an animal companion that he converses with. Not every Ranger uses a bow, and he actually comes with two pips in dual-wielding.
>>
>>4183209
>he actually comes with two pips in dual-wielding
Not in BG1.
>>
>>4182274
Action-consequence, lots of quests that can be solved in different ways, karma system, skills, perks, random encounters, different endings, factions and Myron. You can be an slaver, a boxer, a complete slut that makes porn movies, a drug dealer and all kind of things.
The combat is clunky and it's not balanced at all but besides that it's great and has little to do with Baldur's Gate.
>>
>>4183217
Obviously not since dual-wielding wasn't introduced until BG2. Did you know that combustion engines weren't in horse drawn carriages either?
>>
>>4182578
ToEE isn't even retro
if you want to be elitist, namedrop the gold box games or realms of arkania

I've been replaying the Jeff Vogel Exile games.

>tfw have discovered the knoweldge brew and can't stop myself from running between Lennus and Sqiggus constantly raising cash to buy more ingredients to make more brews and pump everyone up to top stats
>Tfw have been doing this for about 30 in game days while Valorim burns.

Love Exile/Avernum. I need to get back to my last playthrough of Avernum 2.

I hate to be "that guy", but play original Baldur's Gate if you can. The EE version is unbalanced, and the challenge of the original is a big part of the fun.

Disclaimer: I'm not the guy who says the EE versions are shit because of extra gay content or lack of moddability. I personally am playing BG2:EE just fine and it's better than the original (fewer bugs, some useful features). I'm also aware it may be hard to obtain vanilla BG, if you are using android or iOS for example.

Sorry man, only actual geniuses can comprehend the infinite complexity that is the Fallout 2 combat system. I never got it myself. It's all like, "Whoa man what are these green dots for? Six-sided tiles? What the fuck, it's like I'm in some non-einsteinian Twilight Zone universe!" It literally requires an advanced degree in mathematics to be able to do it effectively. You better stick with Diablo.
>>
>>4184910
how is the EE version unbalanced?
>>
>>4185571

You have access to class kits which weren't present in the original BG. For example, EE allows you to select Inquisitor as a subclass of Paladin, whereas in original BG, you were limited to "vanilla" Paladin. The class kits or subclasses often have special abilities, e.g. berserker rage or the inquisitor's dispel magic, which give the player an "unfair advantage" since the monsters, enemy encounters etc in BG1 aren't set up with these additional abilities in mind. And that's a real shame because in original BG1 the encounters are very skilfully designed with just the right difficulty level.

What are the best versions to play of the Wizardry games?
>>
currently doing a HoF run on icewind dale EE with a fresh party. Just reached the Kuldahar Pass, this is my party:

Dorfus - dwarf defender
Daniel - gnome fighter/cleric
Sarina - elf totemic druid
Miran - halfling fighter/thief
Bailey - halfelf bard

PS1 or PC98 for 1-4
FM Towns for 5
SFC for 6
Windows for 8
>>
>>4187731
Cool, thanks anon. What about 7?
>>
>>4187741
Personally I wouldn't recommend 7 at all.
If you don't speak Japanese then your only choice is between IBM-DOS and Gold and from those DOS is the better choice.
>>
>>4187723

Great names you've chosen there buddy. Bailey sounds very fucking elven.
>>
>>4182267
Does squeaky wheel get the kick?
>>
>>4187731
I disagree with you senpai.

7 is really good and you should probably play the Dark Savant trilogy (6~8) on PC to export your saves.

PS1 version of 4 is great though. Personally love the graphics and the arranged mode seems fun and very challenging (shame this mode is only playable on moon runes).
>>
>>4187932
You should play 6-8 on PC but damn if 6 on SNES isn't the definitive version of the game, multiclassing bug aside.
>>
>>4187932
>7 is really good
For what, spending days wading through enemies while NPCs extort you?
>>
>>4184952
Why wouldn't they? Including even one mental stat on your character would've made him better rounded instead of a two dimensional "i liek swords" caricature.
>>
>>4182270
The idea of a Ranger being a ranged specialist /w Bows (and related, the Fighter being a melee specialist) didn't exist at the time - dual-wielding was more their mechanical identity, with a slight dash of Druid spellcasting
>>
>>4187979
What's the multi-classing bug?

Thri-kreen Fighter / Mage
>>
>>4182267
what's the best non-triple multiclass to solo IWD? Been thinking of trying a cleric/mage or a mage/thief
>>
>>4189640
But Minsc doesn't even have the minimum Wisdom necessary to apply for Rangerhood and he can't dual-wield in the first game.

About the only identity I can think of for Minsc is "nature warrior".

Also, Minsc prefers two-handers, so you can just swap a two-hander with a bow and he makes for a really versatile fighter that way.

i have no idea what this s, but I love that image. anyone got some hints and tips for someone tht has never played wizardry?
>>

Class changing is supposed to stick you with +1 HP/spell points until you reach the level your former class had, kind of like dual classing in AD&D, since the main point of it was to get more spells known and more skill points. It doesn't do that in the SNES version so you end up with extremely high HP and spell point totals just from multiclassing once, and if you do it more than once, the only way enemies are going to threaten them are by instant death or status effects because they'll easily reach 500-600 HP.

Lack of mental fortitude doesn't always mean lack of character. One of the most seemingly charismatic and imaginative guy I know who has lived a rather interesting life is in fact a total moron. Couldn't even handle elementary school.
>>
>>4189727
Fair enough - I'm just pointing out that in the past, Fighter classes were intended to be flexible - sometimes you take a weapon and shield, sometimes you kite with a bow and other times you dual-wield depending on the circumstances - the over specialization concept came later
>>
>>4189842
>anyone got some hints and tips for someone tht has never played wizardry?
That's not Wizardry, it's Dark Sun
>>
>>4189875
And so he has a high Charisma and low Intelligence. He didn't dump stat all of the non-physical attributes.

Don't recommend 7 at all? Uwot? 7 is great too. Stay away from Gold version, though. You can bring your band from 6 to 7 to 8.
>>
>>4193551
7 overstays its welcome far too much and the nonlinearity ruins a lot.
You can transfer from 6 to 8. There aren't many worthwhile items in 7 to carry over.
>>
>Bg2. Pick any melee class

>Buy 1 protection from magic scroll and 1 prot from undead

>Use the undead scroll on demiliches and vampires

>use prot magic all the time

>Oh but use the potion swap trick

>Eventually get hardiness. Cast 3 in a row for 120% physical imm.

>Congrats youre basically unkillable

Completely legit considering all the other cheap ass shit with vecna, vhailors, spike traps, etc
