Since DVDs are written from the inside ring to the outside ring, as long as the data stopped before the edge of the disc it would read fine.

Its not a meme. It has different Digital to analog converter than the subsequent releases.

However, it was not perfect. It had to be plugged in/on full time. But, for what the cost of an old system like this, it well exceeded its value as a high quality cd player.

The downside is that the laser on these units is prone to fail due to heat stress from the power supply....This has causes a huge side "scene" with people "fixing" the failures of design and adding/enhancing. Some of the units are fairly impressive for what they are. The "meme" happens when you have a sound system that costs thousands of dollars, and you are using a $15 yard sale cd player to sound better than few hundred dollar units. I have tested this, and on a good system there is a noticeable difference from "high end" cd players.

the 1000 (jap) and 1001 (us) units had this. I don't know about the 1002 (europe).

So I'd have to dig it out of storage but I own a copy that I got from a small distributor through my families business as a pre order for majora's mask. It was grey with a non holographic sticker and it being a pre order from a legitimate company makes me think its not a fake.
