There is a growing trend of taking the old Coleco LCD tabletop games, gutting them, and customizing them to run the actual arcade roms. They are even going as far as to create custom cabinets and button layouts.
How do you feel about this?
I'd really like to get my hands on that Tempest cabinet. That one is really nice.
On topic, I follow the Facebook page for the guy who makes most of this stuff. I'm definitely in favor of it. Over the years I've found a ton of these units in really tough shape. If someone can recondition them and make something good out of it I'm all for it.

mixed feelings
i was around when these came out, and obviously they are a disappointment when compared to the actual games, or console/home computer versions
but then the controls are real crappy, so i imagine even with emulation they are shitty

Considering I've found one working and complete one out of about 20 different cabs I've come across while thrifting, going to pawn shops etc, probably a good use.
So many of these are little more than a scratched plastic shell and some corroded circuits now.
Like, fuck people who take a really good condition one and hack it up but I imagine that's a rarity.

As far as I know those tabletop games have always been some kind of collectible gimmick. Whether they play the original game or the arcade version isn't gonna be the biggest dealbreaker. I admit they look nice but I'd rather emulate it or play on a real cabinet.
Seems pretty sacrilegious when you could just make a new case for the project and probably get nicer controls than trying to repurpose the stock ones.
