Places either long gone or still hanging on, this is where we honor them.
It still hurts
Namely the forums. It even generated DUR BUTTER, which shortly found its way over to 4chan back in the mid-2000s.
Some sites I used to visit all the time
http://www.atarihq.com/tsr/
http://gepdhq.tripod.com/
I can't be the only one. And for its time it was great, especially when you wanted to play on a computer you couldn't download stuff onto like at the library.
F
Cult of Kefka. Don't have a screenshot, but it was my favorite site for ROMs.
I remember using the old Emuparadise and EdgeEmu forums for trading ISO's, long before direct download of such large files was a thing (short lived pinkpuff aside). EmuChina threw out some hard to find shit when they weren't busy losing all of their content or randomly blocking outside countries.
There used to be a fantastic Gernam PSX ISO site that used BCUP and YahooSauger to distribute their files. I found my way there through a hole in the wall forum called PSX Tavern. I cant remember the name of it... I eventually stole their distrobution model to run my own site for a few years. Back when Geocities would only let my site get an hour of traffic before blocking it for the next 23 hours due to high page views.
The shit we had to go through to get and share games was retarded.

OP, I just nostalgiad hard.
Underdogs was my go to site when I was in High school. Finding a source to download classic DOS games was mind blowing to me.
Man I miss the Abandonware scene, it was so good. GOG just aint the same and I resent paying for 25 year old dos games.
Good times.
Fantasyanime was the site that introduced me to emulators and roms. Fun to see that the site is still around.
The chick who founded Home of the Underdogs was a real qt back in the day.
Now she's rich from investment banking.
At least vogoneers promised to keep file archive up.
Dosgames was my bread and butter back in 2003. I had such a shitty dial-up internet back then that I made a list to my friend for games I wanted. He would then deliver them in floppy disks.
world-of-Nintendo.com was my main hangout circa 1998, and you can still visit it in its original Internet 1.0 glory.
I remember being back in 2002, downloading those Anime (PD) SNES ROMs and saving them on floppies to distribute at school. Good times.

"Adult manga" and the like? I remember downloading back in the early 00s.

Ah, god yes Planetemu is my faouvrite thing to ever come from France.
I'm pretty sure that this was the most popular Sonic site in the Web 1.0 era, but the only part of it that's still barely active is the forum.

This still exists and is updated relatively often
Anyone remember a site called Battle Of The Video Game Heroes (BOTVGH)?
It was like a shitty fanfiction website that focused entirely on a weird storyline where Mario, Cranky Kong and other characters were stranded on a desert island
For some reason the cows from Mario Kart 64 would get dropped on people's heads (like an anvil in an old Loony Tunes cartoon) and there was a Cow King who was like, their boss
I remember lots of randumb humour and a lot of infighting and drama within the limited "community" which was mostly based on an IRC channel, one year (the series had various "seasons" of "episodes" that were all written by various "authors" who would appear within the episodes, breaking the fourth wall frequently, usually by announcing that they were the writer for this particular episode and interacting with the vg characters), one of these authors decided to outlaw the cows for the entire season without asking any of the admins or people who ran the site (and apparently they weren't allowed to change this or anything because that would be "infringing on my copyright" as if you could copyright video game character fanfiction you wrote for someone else's series) and then a year later the cows got brought back
In retrospect I can see it was completely fucking retarded but I wonder where all those people are now, this was my first "community" for the Internet (alongside a Yoshi themed fanfiction message board that actually resembled 4chan somehow and features a notable poster named Yoshi Nukem) so I have some weird fond memories
RIP in peace
>>4168762
F, there's still a scattered community of assholes but it'll never be the same.
>>4168830
Me and two douchebags founded the fucking thing, it was so sad to see it become a venue for our teenage hatred and trolling and see others feed into it instead of being a welcoming community

retro games are SHIT and for LOSERS
Qualityroms dot com was my first rom site. Great site with stupid, yet entertaining game reveiws. Too bad they shut dkwn some time ago
>>4167892
Nowadays they're called "Adult manga", I just look. Back then they were just "Anime (PD)". My first language isn't English, so I wasn't aware PD meant Public Domain. I thought it was Porn something.
Step aside, fellas.

They were chronically overpriced compared to literally any other importer. Not sure why people bought from them.
Oldfag reporting in. Couldn't find any traces from 1996 though when I first used the site.
>>4169094
ArchNacho and Tortilla Godzilla were the shit. So many good SNES recs from them back in the day.
>>4168758
I used to read it. It's really fucking bad now though.
But when I was 10 it was the greatest thing ever.

I can't bring myself to beg for an invite to the successor site. Both Underground Gamer and Bit-Gamer were so good, not just for the torrents, but the forum sections were great too to get console mods/fixes. I do miss it.

I vaguely remember the HotU forum community. It was run by a Taiwanese woman who was really intelligent.
I think there was another guy called George who was like "the funny guy" and studied law or something.
>>4169413
Not the guy you responded to, but Plasticman's did exist. That said I only used it for H games.
Tried to find it years later, no trace of it anywhere. RIP.

I can't believe Planet Diablo is fucking DEAD
>>4171217
Think of it this way, if Planet Diablo was alive it would be reporting nothing but Diablo 3 news and seasons. If you wanted a Diablo hub that reports on useful activity, you have http://www.tristr.am/ which has real time character and lobby monitoring.

Snesorama was GOAT-tier during the late PSP era. People on there discovered a game demo exploit that allowed you to play any games without modding your console or installing custom firmware. The only caveat was that the game HAD to be under 1GB (so no Peace Walker), or else it wouldn't work.
>>4172940
Remember those early game rips that had to fit into 32MB?

Just got in to post this one. Site even has the very same design from 20 years ago, it's a breath of fresh air over this web 2.0 faggotry
Help an anon out.
I requented a ROMs website with a nice interface, it was all black and irange with a fire-themed webpage.
I don't know why, but I think it was linked to DGEMU.
Good SNES ROMs in there
I used to frequent abandonia.com for years, but I don't bother frequenting anymore. The site is still up, but they rarely upload anything anymore. I still use it for finding requests for games I like, the algorithm for games-you-may-like is pretty nice.

RIP FarCry, Saints Row, Crysis, Battlefront 2, Battlefield etc.
I used to frequent Planet Half-Life and the other "Planet" sites, but then 4chan became a thing and I didn't bother visiting game specific websites anymore because I could just get all information from the 'chan. Goddamn, I just found out there was Planet Deus Ex, I'm sure that would had been my favorite hangout if I had played DX at the time.

Damn, I used to visit that site to find codes for GTA. I remember when back in the days I used to just google or yahoo shit like "cheat codes for (game)" and then I would end up on some random websites that may or may not have cheat codes which may or may not have worked. Then someone told me about cheatplanet and my mind was blown how dedicated and accurate that site was.
I wonder why people even bothered to make shit up like false cheat codes. Maybe they just overhead them and put them on their homepages without trying them.
