It seems like they were designed like arcade software. Like, you're supposed to leave your nintendo on all week and a bunch of people are supposed to walk past and play it.

It was just normal and expected so they felt it appropriate to add one. You can still use it to compete within a single playing session, even without doing anything weird like leaving the console on overnight. I guess they figured that some kids would do that.

I mean I never cared about score at all so yeah I don't REALLY get it, but I guess they were probably thinking something like that.

Back in the day magazines had high score contests, kids sent pictures of the TVs.
The magazines even gave kids advice on how to take good pics of the TV (remember, no digital camera so you couldn't see how the picture turned out until you revealed it, unless it was Polaroid)

Lol no. More likely is that it was intended to use battery backup but got cut somewhere along the way. They just kept the feature in the game.
