A friend of mine had this and another mech game that played DAMN similar to it. Like almost exactly like it. I don't even think they were made by the same company and I'll be damned if I can remember what the game was called.
Just read an interview with the lead devs. The highlights:
>Both inspired by VOTOMS, Gundam and Blaster Master
>only played Assault Suits Vulkan (Cybernator) a few times
>Key influence from ASV was actually how to do the controls
>Uses a modified ZAMN engine
>Never heard of Front Mission or Front Mission:Gun Hazard
>was gonna be a Nintendo Published game
>1995 hit and everyone stopped caring about cartridge games
>sold it for very little to Konami
>50,000 copies
>Got the name "Battle Droids" but Konami wanted to call it Metal Warriors

It was probably Cybernator. The original was called Assault Suits Valken.

If it was snes, it would likely be Front Mission: Gun Hazard, or Cybernator (Assault Suits Valken).
If it's a modern game, it's either Gunhound Ex or Gigantic Army.
I got this for my birthday many years ago. I thought it was kind of a lame present personally because I had. Ever heard of it, but I was grateful all the same. I had no idea it could sell for over $300 until last year. I even still have the box and manual, though they are beat up pretty bad.
Still, I have fond memories of it so I don't plan on selling it or something stupid like that.
