Why did Tobal 2 fail?
>>
>>4152415
What's that?
>>
>>4152415
Because Tobal No 1 failed. Square was really full of themselves back then. I swear the only reason they even made that game was to make the title of the first make sense.
>>
>best graphics
>good gameplay
>300 customizable characters
>Akira Toriyama design
>deep and amazing RPG mode
>Squaresoft street cred
>magazines drooling over the game

It had no reason to fail.
>>
>>4152559
I think it paradoxically was unsuccessful because no Western release and no Western release because No 1 was unsuccessful in the West.

I really cannot understand why they made Ehrgeiz's dungeon mode so different. That game's dungeon is so much more carefully designed but you have so much less reason to explore it.

Because fighting games were getting out of vogue by the late 1990's. Aside from the staples like Street Fighter and Tekken, the majority of gamers had moved on and the lesser-known titles fell by the wayside.

Tobal is right there with Toshinden, Bloody Roar and Fighting Vipers. Even games like Kensei: Sacred Fist to a certain extent.

Huh? Tobal 2 was released six months before the international release of FF7, and only three months after the Japanese release.

It seems that for the second game they just grabbed some reject designs from the first.
Tobal no2 feels cheap and barebones. The music is mostly boring and the NPCs clash with the Toriyama characters.

It's a good game, but I like the first Tobal better.

Tobal isn't an easy game. I tought it was shit until it clicked and I learned how to play it. Now I recognize it as the best 3D fighting game and the most realistic one, even if the characters are really weird.
Start with the first game.
Start with someone easy and fun to play like Fei. Fuck Oliems.
Learn the commands.
NEVER MASH BUTTONS!
>>
>>4152415
Because it's from Squaresoft. They're too pretentious & obnoxious, that they think they can get away with selling this game with a shitty looking character on the cover.
>>
>>4155291
I remember back in the day when it was around, I been meaning to get the game, but it never went under a single cent of $49.99 plus tax. To put in perspective, Samurai Showdown 2 computer version was being sold right next bin for $2. Square always had this outrageous notion that they get to sell their product expensively and it will still sell.
>>
>>4155291
>shitty looking character
Another underage user? That looked hot as heck in the 90s, the obvious Toriyama design being very desirable (due to Dragon Ball Z, a popular anime back then).

>>4155898
Stop lying. $50 is not expensive for a game that's both new and imported.
>>
>>4155927
What in any of that was a lie? I didn't lie.
>>

>>4154435

>>
>>4155898
Yeah, $49.99 was a lot back then. I guess Squaresoft thought that the games they made were high quality(I'm not saying it isn't), so they figured they would sell the game expensively.

>>4155927
Underage? I'm 35. The bandage on his face & his hair style just doesn't appeal to me, but I do see the Dragonball Z influence on the character.
>>
>>4155984
No, $49.99 was not a lot.

>In 1990, a copy of Strider for the still-new Genesis could run you $67.95, which is a staggering $120.95 in today's dollars. In 1992, stores were charging $69.99 for high-demand games like Final Fantasy III and Street Fighter II, the equivalent of $116.18 today.

>As 1996 came around, prices started to fall back to historic norms somewhat, as retailers cleared out excess stock of increasingly outdated 16-bit games and got rid of cartridges for failed systems like the 32X and Jaguar. But by 1997, high-priced N64 games sent asking prices soaring again. The last few SNES games were also going for often ridiculous prices at this time; a copy of the SNES' Toy Story for $79.99 in 1997 was the single highest nominal price we saw in our research (though other titles were higher on an inflation adjusted basis).

>By 2000, cartridges were having their last gasp in the form of some tired N64 releases, but those ROM costs still prevented retailers from lowering the price too much. Wal-mart was charging $79.97 for a copy of the N64's Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness that year even as brand new PlayStation 2 games were retailing for $50.
>>
>>4156010
And to be fair:

>The dawn of the CD didn't bring immediate savings for the console-based consumers, though. New games for the PlayStation and Saturn routinely retailed for $59.99 in 1996 dollars. Some titles, like Virtual Fighter 2, could go for as much as $69.99 ($103.59 in today's dollars). Lower production costs and competition quickly brought those prices down, though, and by 1997 it was hard to find a new 32-bit game for more than $49.99 (still more than $70 in today's dollars, though).

Conclusion: the price quoted for Tobal 2 was normal.
>>
>>4156010
>>4156014
I see. I thought games back then were $29.99(Saturn & Playstation prices) or $39.99(N64 prices), that's what I remembered anyways.
>>
>>4156023
I guess that was the standard price for used games (the desirable kind of used games), and you mixed it up with the price for new games.
>>
>>4156010
I remember I wasn't allowed to get Perfect Dark for a friend's birthday because it was $99.99 CAD at Future Shop

This is a detailed model used only for winning poses, when only one character is rendered.
This kind of trick happened even in the very first Virtua Fighter, that started it. Even on the 32x.

Many games have more detailed models for close-ups.

I think one of the main things I don,t get about Tobal 2 are the weird combos the CPU does that involve them sparkling while they bust out a cool 5 hits or whatever. How do you do those? I only figured out you can do fireballs by pressing in the analog which is incredibly strange for a commandbased fignter. Not everyone even had an analog controller, was this some way of being all 'hey you get this unbeatable move if you do'?
>>
>>4156501
>the weird combos the CPU does
KEK
This is Tobal 2, not casual shit like Street Fighter 5, you need ABSOLUTE TIMING AND PRECISION with the imput
>>
>>4156528
No explanation then? Alright good to know you don't know jack shit you're talking about.

>>4156528

>>4156540
Yeah this guy seems to be talking edgy 'I play these games to be the absolute best and know how to counter any kick with a reversal throw to combo' bullshit. I -know- there's a fuckton to this game but you don't have to be a condescending douche about it. The combos I mentioned seem 'special', like there was a graphical effect when pulling off a Tekken 2 10-string or something, and they probably are timing.

Grappling has a ton to it, but it's so easy to break out of a grapple so it feels useless. There's a lot of weird things in this game that are probably useful in some situations but most of the time you're pounding your opponent and trying to edge them out of the ring while watching where you are and adjusting accordingly so they can't do the same, and I like that aspect. Only Virtua Fighter had as easy ring-outs.
>>
>>4155217

I'm fighting game literate, sell me on Tobal. I know nothing about its mechanics. What does it do that vf/tekken/soul calibur don't?
>>
>>4156658
Why bother, go play something with an active userbase.
>>
>>4156540
SF2 Zangief also requires ABSOLUTE TIMING AND PRECISION to pull off basic moves but that's seen as an obsolete game design sensibility, not something good.
>>
>>4156668
>SF2 Zangief also requires ABSOLUTE TIMING AND PRECISION to pull off basic moves
If you say this you never played Tobal 2
>>
>>4156680
How the fuck is insane execution requirement a good thing? I'd rather play something where my moves come out whenever I want.
>>
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4SzcLwnLg0s
Quest mode seems more fun than the main game.
>>
>>4156501
I never had an analog controller and I performed fireballs easily. It was something like back, square and hold back.

>>4156658
You can walk in any direction with the d-pad, you have one dedicated button to block and one to jump. It's much more "3D" than the other games.

Also you have a quest mode where you can capture hundreds of characters that are playable afterwards.
>>
>>4156681
Tobal 2 is a game made for people who are just better than you are at videogames. If your reaction speed isn't fast enough that you can split a second in half twice, then just give up. Go home.

For me it's just enough to occupy my full attention.

As far as videogames go, that's amazing. I love it.

this is why it's not a great idea to make games that are inaccessible to people with average coordination/intelligence, but it's not like an untalented and average person would be able to design a good game in the first place.
