I was looking through a little advertisement pamphlet in my Japanese copy of Final Fantasy VIII and noticed a game I've never seen before that looked kind of interesting called Racing Lagoon. Any of y'all know if it would be worth giving a go? Seems like it would at least be neat to see one of Square's experiments from that era. Not sure if my Japanese would be up to snuff though, especially if text shows up during races or something where I can't control the speed of it.

I think it's a career racer like Need for Speed. Maybe Tokyo Xtreme would be a better comparison though. And those were released outside of Japan.

This is the racing RPG, right? That's a good idea for a game. I wonder why no one else ever thought to do one.
I've played it, it really is a racing RPG but unless you can read moon you'll need to read a guide not just for the mechanics but because you can accidentally drive by the wrong place and trigger boss races you're not equipped for yet.

It's a CarPG which is a genre that desperately needs attention or a revival.

Why is all the HUD text in English?

This applies to like at least half of Japan's domestic videogames, media, advertising, fucking everything.

Japan loves English.

I actually haven't played many racing games so I'm not too familiar with those.

Don't a lot of car games have a bunch of stats and customization anyway? Or do you mean having more of a story?

I do know enough Japanese to play stuff like FFVIII but my main problem is speed, especially if I run into a word I'm not familiar with where I can't pause or leave it on that line.

Those are some pretty nice graphics.

If you like the graphics, you gotta see the uncompressed shots.
