List the top 5 (retro) games of any genre you like.

Personally for top 5 traditional, turn-based JRPGs, I'd say:

1. Chrono Trigger
2. Suikoden II
3. LUNAR: The Silver Star
4. Phantasy Star IV: The End of the Millennium
5. Earthbound
>>
survival horror
1. Silent Hill 1
2. Hellnight
3. Enemy Zero
4. Clocktower (playstation)
5. Dino Crisis

I'd do a jrpg one, but it'd be too tough to narrow it down to just 5 so i won't bother
>>
>>4141582
2D Platformer
1. Super Mario Bros 3
2. Mega Man 2
3. Sonic 3 & Knuckles
4. Super Metroid
5. Castlevania Symphony of the Night
>>
>>4141586

Enemy Zero is garbage. Swap it out for RE2 or Parasite Eve and you're good.
>>
>>4141604
>no super mario world
why?
>>
>>4141610

>Parasite Eve

1. Gimmick!
2. Super Mario Bros. 3

>>
>>4141582
Survival Horror
1. Resident Evil 2
2. Chaos Break
3. Dino Crisis
4. Resident Evil 3
5. Alone in the Dark

I tried other genres but I'm a 6th gen kind of guy.
>>

Eh, here's my top five retro jrpgs.

1. Breath of Fire IV
2. Earthbound
3. Chrono Trigger
4. Dragon Quest III
5. Metal Max Returns

Pretty standard list, I know.
>>4142226
Lunar is pretty generic, not bad but a very safe game in my opinion. Honestly I don't think highly of SoM either, I had only tried playing it recently a few years ago and it just seemed pretty bad. For Lunar there are a fuck ton of versions, each with pros and cons. Sega CD (looks most dated), PS1 remake, the one in OP's pic (awful translation), and the PSP remake (toned down difficulty) are the best of the bunch though.
>>
>Lunar
It's bad
>Earthbound
To this day I love the aesthetics but never would say it's top 5

My SNES jrpg list:
1. Final Fantasy V
2. Live A Live
3. Romancing SaGa 2
4. Tactics Ogre
5. Dragon Quest III
5. Chrono Trigger
>>
>>4142489
Isn't live a live like super short though
>>
>>4142471
>>4142489
aren't Dragon Quest games meant to be pretty light on story and drama? I've had a crack at VIII on 3DS, but it hasn't grabbed me, so I was thinking of trying one of the SNES games, either V or the III remake.

DQ is often more focused on exploration and combat. VIII is a bit more of a casualized DQ game, and I don't mean that entirely badly. It is more simple gameplay wise and puts a bigger focus on it's plot more the any DQ. For beginners of the genre it's a nice game but for veterans it may be a bit dull.

I suggest III on snes, that game really shows you what DQ is about. In III you make your own party, everyone in the party is silent here. Also nice in III is it has some nonlinear sections which are great. DQV is also more story focused, at least compared to other DQ, but it's more subtle and better done in my opinion. In it you watch the hero from childhood to adulthood, even getting a wife and kids. It's really meaningful seeing the hero grow up, it's why some tend to really like V as it has a sense of progress in time.

Haven't played nearly enough JRPGs to actually compile any sort of good list, I tried but all I can come up with are typical classics like the first two Suikoden games, either FFVI or FFVII depending on what I want more at the time, Chrono Trigger, and Xenogears.

And Xenogears is there purely because I severely lack anything else to put in, the game itself is a huge waste of amazing potential with its relative lack of polish and that disastrous second disk.

That's not to say that I haven't played other JRPGs, I have. From Earthbound, through various Legends of Mana and Swordcraft Stories, finishing on shit like Golden Sun. Is there nothing left that has an outstanding artstyle and a story that goes beyond the typical FF/DQ tropes?
>>
>>4144065
Dude, the genre is so much more then that. For retro I suggest Breath of Fire IV and Metal Max Returns. Breath of Fire IV has a fun combat system, great story, phenomenal pixel art, a unique setting which is a blend of Western and Eastern culture, and is overall just a great game. Metal Max Returns is light on story but is great. You take the role of a bounty hunter out hunting criminals and mutants in a silly take on a post apocalyptic world. In the game your characters have no magic but something better, tanks. You will be able to customize various aspects of your tank to your style. Both are games I highly suggest. There is some other great stuff but it isn't retro so no sure how interested you are.
>>
>>4141582
RPGs
1) Vagrant Story
2) Brandish
3) Breath of Fire III
4) Breath of Fire IV
5)Eye of the Beholder
>>
3D low poly adventure action/rpg games, order not important.

1. Megaman Legends Trilogy
2. Brave Fencer Musashi
3. Vagrant Story
4. Ghost in the Shell
5. Bomberman Hero

Low poly is my favorite style as the tech limitations are clear cut so you have to have style to really elevate it above the rest. The simple geometric layouts of the gameworlds was autistically "comfy" and the cheesey VA of the 90's is heartwarming to me instead of embarrassing like some think.
>>
Lunar Silver Star and Eternal Blue remain some of my favorite PS1 games of all time. I treasure the physical copies I have for both.

I am still somewhat pissed that both didn't get digital releases on the PS3. (Reports are that Victor Ireland and the rest of Working Designs made the license hell to work out.)

If they had then IMO all the best PS1 games would have been released on the PS3.
>>
>>4144245
It's more Game Arts.

They've shown that they are happy to releases remakes of Silver Star. (GBA, PSP)

I believe the translation rights for the PS1 games are technically a separate copyright that what's left of WD still owns. With them being defunct, it's impossible to license out the translation to release digitally. (Sony requires that the PS1 game be EXACTLY the same as the disc when put up on the store.)
>>
>>4144245
Vic has a notorious hatred for sony (or the people running it at the time), its why they focused on the Saturn so hard, literal spite.
>>
>>4144251
The problem is that the Working Design translation of both games are really part of the charm. (Especially in SSC)

I would really like to see a modern day port of both games with both the WB translation AND a more faithful translation to the original Japanese.
>>
>>4144262
>I would really like to see a modern day port of both games with both the WB translation AND a more faithful translation to the original Japanese.

This along with both ENG and JAP language options for the dialog/cut scenes has LONG been a hope of mine.
>>
>>4141586
You know you're a hipster when you make a top 5 of retro survival horror games and you don't put a single Resident Evil game in there.
>>
>>4144262
>a more faithful translation to the original Japanese.

>>

Because I would like to see the game actually get a good modern day translation and general re-release?

Eternal Blue is starting to become a bitch to find as well.

I'll emulate if I have to, but I really want another general release done right.

>Dino Crisis is much much worse than any RE
again, RE looks better, but DC actually requires you to manage your resources and the enemies are more threatening
>>
>>4145273
I didn't play the PS1 version of Clock Tower so I can't speak, but the SNES version is nigh unplayable thanks to how slow the main character controls and due to the fact that they actually TAKE AWAY your life for having the character run.

It's a shame because everything else is masterfully crafted. The SNES game deserves a remake in the same vein, it would definitely work had it been upgraded.
