I honestly can't think of any. These games might be considered a rare breed. There are some 2D shooters, like pic, that would fit the bill.

There aren't really any retro games like that, that I know of. Serious Sam is like a rebellious response to the realism FPS trend of the time, the fast paced 90's FPS games don't really throw hordes of monsters at you like SS or Painkiller do.
Closest thing I can think of are third party Doom wads like Hell Revealed, which are still pretty different design-wise in design but do have massive battles with hundreds of monsters.
Barely retro, but check out Will Rock. And then there's of course the Shadow Warrior remake/reboot, but it's definitely not /vr/.
KISS Psycho Circus - the Nightmare Child is pretty much the spiritual predecessor of Painkiller and one of the first that had a strong focus on horde battles.
