Best looking pre-rendered background ever made?
close tie between the best RE (RE3) and the best DC (Dino Crisis 2)
>>4138774
Enjoyed Oot. But they're only in the game because of space limits.
>>4138774
Such small streets were obviously designed by Japs.
>>4138816
it honestly looks more european than american.
but then, as you say, it might be more inspired by the narrow streets in jap cities.
>>4138826
Newfoundland has small streets like that.
Not best by any means, but very memorable.
>>4138835
like downtown st. john's thats about it.
Memorable pre-rendered backgrounds - the game
In terms of richness I believe FF7 holds up against most anyone. Especially as it carries on through 40 hours of game play.
I do apologize for being that guy though.
>>4138774
Do you think all those bits of glass and stuff were actually modeled in the render, or did they just paint them on top afterward? In the Myst making-of, for example, they talk about how a lot of shots use compositing and Photoshop (or the equivalent) to touch them up.
>>4138978
Yee. Rural eras far back do too.
Regular towns have better roads.
>>4139008
It's alright. I only hate the inconstiant human models for charscters. Nothing else.
>>4139026
There's a mod of the PC game that fixes it.
>>4138936
I've always been partial to FF7's backgrounds.
>>4139112
Oh nice.
Final Fantasy 9.
This one always captivated me, I remember losing many times because I was staring at the background.
Resident Evil 0 desu
Baten Kaitos too
>>4140112
> that shitty upscaling and filtering
Always loved the backgrounds in FF7. So much character and variation in them. Also every house and town has pipes EVERYWHERE, for some reason.
>>4140664
But it will be so mature and dark tho
Since we're on FF7 this is one of my favorites from the game.
>>4139112
Those mods are a neat idea but kind of look like shit in practice.
I always get a great feeling when Im running through Resident Evil 3's streets.
SO DETAILED
>>4140709
>"...and HERE WE ARE MY DEAR VIEWERS ON THE SET OF THE MUCH ANTICIPATED GAME, DOOM 3!"
>>4140571
it's not upscaled retard, square downscaled those for the game though
>>4140815
It is. It is HD remaster, isn't it?
I would put Chrono Cross up against literally any other game.
http://imgur.com/a/7E4oK
Out of all the pre-rendered stuff in DKC, Cranky's cabin was my favorite thing to look at.
RE3 gets my vote.
I could take just about any screen and it'd make a great desktop background.
>>4140990
What is this?
>>4142305
SaGa Frontier 2.
>>4140980
my favorite
>>4140980
Cross is GOAT
>>4138815
The game actually renders all the polygons necessary for rendering the pre-rendered scenes in real time
Maximize mum comfy
Also comfy in its own way
No way the remake is going to catch all the charm of the original
I like how everything is super cramped, very Asian in design
>>4143106
As a Eurofag that cramped design seemed totally normal.
Anyone have and FF8 dump?
Dollet, Balamb, anywhere and everywhere?
>>4143156
Never new Kalm had a castle wal like that for some reason.
BUT I SAID FF8 REEEEEEEEEEEE
>>4143163
No you post em
>static camera points
step it up
>>4143314
That's cool. The background is an FMV or just pretty well done pre-rendered textures?
>>4143314
Doesnt hold up to the detail of ghe static images
>>4141702
I Liked that too.
I loved how a lot of the graphics from Donkey Kong Country looked like living dioramas. This was most noticeable in the first game, for some reason.
>>4143481
We will never see prerendered back grounds like this again
>>4138774
The one you see everyday when you go outside.
>>4143653
Oh wait, does Baten Kaitos count? It's GamecubeAnd I forgot this was /vr/
>>4143658
>does Baten Kaitos count?
no
Crono cross is definitely under rated
>>4138774
Whoever's PARTY PARTY PARTY PARTY that was, it looks like it's been.... cancelled...
>>4143719
yeah, the sequel looks pretty too
Maximum comfy
>>4143787
>people try to say 8 and 9 have better graphics than this
heretics
>>4142593
There's a cool WebM that shows it off.
>>4143314
This kind of thing looks so fucking good.
Which other games used FMVs as backgrounds? I can only think of KI and maybe some arcade shooters.
>>4143851
Silpheed on SegaCD
>>4143791
The thing is, is that the character models look like absolute ass in FF7 and are not at all consistent with the style of the backgrounds. FF8 and FF9 are much more consistent in their visuals.
>>4143890
I love the character models so much
>>4143958
Why did he call him new comer if he already knew him
>>4143974
he didn't really at that point. AVALANCHE hired cloud for that job so he was a newcomer in the group
>>4143676
Kek, good ol' Marvin, hope they do him justice in the Remake
>>4143958
Popeye forearms
>>4143958
Same. They play a lot nicer with the PS1's wonky 3D rendering too.
>>4143229
DK2 got real difficult real fast, but I didnt complain as a kid. I just cleaned off my knees and kept running it til I got it right. Kids dont understand these days
>>4143509
Huuuuy-yah!
>>4143986
> AVALANCHE hired cloud for that job so he was a newcomer in the group
I think you mean AVERLANCHE.
>>4145502
Is that what that was supposed to say?
>>4145502
I interpret this as
NO
MERCY
BO1
AVERLUST
I went around AOL when I was a kid referring to myself as Averlust. I thought it was cool because it had the word lust in it. I was into Cradle of Filth at the time.
Also, I seem to remember reading somewhere that BO1 is some reference to killing birds. Anyone confirm?
>>4142593
it only renders the collision model.
>no oddworld
the fuck?
the palettes used in oddysee/exoddus was so nice
>>4140571
LMAO, dumb memester.
That's one of the original renders used in the game, which as usual was fucking lost. Or discarded, who knows.
I *wish* such a "shitty upscaling" filter existed. So shitty that it creates graphics out of nothing.
>>4145867
I forgot about oddworld , amazing atmosphere
>>4138936
oh hay my gif,
I'd say 9 has the best BG, but i haven't found a good background ripping program for it like 7 and 8 have.. =(
>>4140686
everything uses mako energy.
>>4140686
Every area is iconic and the game has great use of colors. It is a very good looking game.
>>4138774
I occasionally come to /vr/ for the nostalgia.
For some reason this image hit me like a ton of bricks. I remember how I felt in my first playthrough of RE3 I was floored with the atmosphere of the game especially exploring at night immediately after the police station, right back to the warehouse. In retrospect you didn't really need to, but exploring those desolate streets was very memorable to me.
I remember leaving the game for like 3 months because I couldn't figure out the Battery puzzle with the statue.
Fucking hell... Time for another play through for old time's sake
This thread needs more oddworld
>>4147728
OP here, i hear ya man, i play RE2 as well few times a year, you just cannot beat a playthrough on either of them, i just hope to fuck Capcom doesn't mess this remake up
>>4138774
All the assets were deleted as per usual back in the days so its all lost.
We will never see FF8 in perfect HD remake, the best we have are retroarch crt shaders.
>I am going Selphie, just you wait.
I miss this genre so much.
>>4148531
Sad I never got to play this one. Loved the first one
>>4148863
Apparently it's not as good as the first PE.
>>4148868
Not a lot of pe back grounds on the web, shame
>>4148889
>>4148889
The office looked so good.

>>4148902
That music has a Japanese charm you could only get from 90s games
More pe
>>4148912
The beauty of PE's OST kinda split into half and created Kingdom Hearts and the Mario & Luigi series' OST. I've yet to find an OST of Yoko's that is an in-between of dance music and ambiental, chilling melodies like PE'S OST.
No way the remake will do wall market right
I WIN! Zoom in for WOW effect.
>>4138774
Parasite Eve 2. Dryfield so comfy. :3
>>4149257
This.

> seeing those camel/horse things for the first time.
Is pe2 worth a play through ? Oil heard its not as good as the first
>>4150215
it's not as good as the first, but still worth a playthrough
the boss batles are better
I'd like to know how the clever Japanese took the idea of trashed slums and made them such comfy places to where people WANT to be in the slums.
>>4143690
Aww yeah LoD is still a great game.
>>4150317
Always love the My Bloody Valentine sign. So 90s.
>>4150317
If I remember correctly that scene was on top of the plate not in the slums
>>4150407
>>4138951
my man
Anyone got some other game? Legend of Dragoon Vampire Hunter D?
>>4150215
It's not as good as PE1 but it's still a great game. It has a really weird and unsettling atmosphere.
Dollet was kind of comfy
>>4143165
Fun fact: The "Pyck" graffiti on the Shinra sign originally said Fuck. You can see the edited P and y were originally an F and a u.
Anyone have a rip of the FF7 title screen with the sword? I mean a version without the text.
>>4138774
Probably something from Commandos or Desperados.
Westwood's Blade Runner had great pre-rendered backgrounds, with those interesting voxel characters
>>4143106
>that bottle of mountain dew on the table.
The shit you see when you're not trying to mash your way through dialogue.
>>4152650
I loved this game so much, I really want to replay it but fear it wont hold up on post Windows XP computers.
I'm really hopeful the new Bladerunner wont be shit.
>>4153001
Pretty sure it's supposed to be a greet wine bottle or other alcohol.
Not sure why they made it so bright though.
>>4153004
I was thinking of digging up my discs to replay, which would be the *effort* way of doing it. Alternatively, one could watch playthroughs on Youtube, and count it as Blade Runner 1.5 in preparation for the sequel.
>>4138774
I'm partial to the backgrounds in remake. Those graphics still hold up even when they're not in HD
>>4154214
Have any photos of the remake been released?
>>4138774
Party party party
Why it was built in the middle of a dessert on top of a prison we will never know
>>4149247
>zoom in
>WOW, that fork is levitating!
>>4155325
Never wold have noticed
>>4154690
Yeah, pic related
>>4155248
At that time, and even in modern day, it would cost less to buy some land out in the desert and put a casino there instead of in the middle of a city
>>4143690
Post more LoD please, that game also had great backgrounds.
>>4140709
that could be an excellent phonee background
>>4143275
WTF I DONT REMEMBER THIS SHOP IN FF7
>>4155463
But on top of a prison? And the only way to get into it os through a slum
>>4150996
Never thought to go back there and enjoy it after the exam where you feel rushed. Lots of ffviii locations were comfy, like the garden and the gardens relaxing music.
>>4153019
it's a bottle of mix
>>4156327
the boss probably just refused to spend money on more storage
>>4138774
Fox body thunder birds?
>>4156327
>>4156392
Back in the days japs were paranoid about corporate espionage and were afraid someone would copy their technology by reverse engineering their code.
Basically learn ninja techniques by dissecting the corpse kind of bullshit.
Because of that many jap games got their source code and assets purged.
>>4156421
That sucks. You'd think or I guess hope that by the 90s they would have had the foresight to keep it. American companies probably did the same thing.
>>4156421
That's why it took so long for final fantasy 9 To come to pc
>>4156421
You'd think all a corperate thef would need to do was reverse engineer a copy of the game, what is purging the assets going to do?
>>4145714
That's what I always assumed but who knows.
>>4148264
>new & tasty
FUCK YOU
>>4157523
That's not new n tasty
>>4156557
You don't seem to understand Japan very well when it comes to IT.
Nips producted all the tech in the 80s and early 90s, they were the modern day china. The catch was that they didn't adopt it themselves, they took a very long time to come to terms with using PCs. Their traditional ways were still functional so they stuck with them until computers were proven and then basically forced on them by outside forces wanting to use e mail and similar teach to communicate. Even today you see a similar mentality where Japanese streamers have to pay to stream yet US has places like Twitch. They're using a late 90's pay to play model almost.
>>4156341
>he never went back to Dollet
Dude..
>>4159084
>Their traditional ways were still functional so they stuck with them
This!
You can see this bullshit in everything Japan and it drives me mad.
If its a game it has great visuals but everything else is basically late 90's or 00's.
If its hardware its powerful and good looking but functionality lack most solutions introduced 5-10 years ago you would expect from such hardware.
If its business they still do shit which is more about tradition at this point than common sense and understanding modern userbase.
Nips stuck in 90's and not in a good way, all their shit now is less about innovation and technology and more about shine and good look.
It can be everything from TV and console to regular software, everything follow same pattern.
Its weird because in 90's they would be the ones to push technology and new solutions to the market and followed by everyone else.
>>4159303
>weak attempt at troll
Seriously tho, I thought nips were traditional and that was a good thing but at this point I am wondering whether its actually tradition and not just inability to adjust to new things.
>>4159303
>They really should take in more immigrants.
They actually are but not because nips suck, its because there arent enough nips that suck, so they allow more aliens to enter their country so they can then be exploited.
That's the thing about nips, they're too smart to be anybody's bitch, even among their own.
>>4159337
Almost everywhere else in the first world did this before Japan though. Especially here in Canada. We LOVE importing cheap labour. All the white families are breaking up and losing all their shit though so you see more of them in shitty jobs now too
>>4138774
all the killer instinct backgrounds
>>4162250
We never got the prerendered back grounds because they loaded off of a hard drive in the arcade versions of the game
>>4138951Is this Digimon?
>>4155243
tfw i wonder still if i was the only person that played Mog House
>>4162382
No you weren't that gluttonous bastard
Are there modern games with pre-rendered graphics? Or has this completely died?
>>4162390
Its dead
>>4142420
where is this from? so comfy and green
please let me know so i can find screen
>>4162390
>>4163381
Pre-rendered backgrounds are still there and they're more common than you think, they just blend more seamlessly with the rest of the graphics.
>>4145867
I saw a friend play oddworld as a kid, and it disgusted me. It was this weird, gross, lanky gollum guy, with a button dedicated to farting.
It was like a game equivalent of the air released when opening a packet of ham.
Just thinking of fucking oddworld makes me feel sick to this day.
>>4159337
There's nothing smart about this.
Any country in the west can tell you that when you start bringing in people to do jobs, then you start letting them stay, then you afford them partial rights, then full rights and you country changes color, values and culture within two generations.
and we keep just falling for it because we think western civilization is too big to fail.
>>4151282
Now that you mention it...
>>4143229
That swamp looks spooky as hell
