What are some of your classic online gaming memories? Did you ever play some of the 90s MMOs?
Where were you when Lord British was kill?

For some reason the "HE DIED" in that image cracks me up.

Its the shock of the impossible!
>>
>play shroud of the avatar free trial
>it's not that good
>check free ultima shards
>they're dying too
;_;

when i was new to uo i attacked a wandering healer and then begged him to stop wrecking my shit, didn't know it was an npc

Any games that give the same feeling of exploration and discovery that UO had? Single or multi-player. I never played a single player Ultima game, would any of them give me the same feeling I had exploring UO's Sosaria with nothing but that shitty cloth map to guide me?

Anyway,
>What are some of your classic online gaming memories?
In UO, I remember abusing provocation back when your skill determined chance to provoke monsters by a flat %, as opposed to higher skill letting you provoke more difficult monsters. You could provoke 2 drakes onto each other with shitty provo skill if you tried enough times. It was actually pretty fun to sit back and watch things kill each other, using arrows to make sure they stayed about the same health, then finishing off the one that lived. Also, joining guilds and declaring war on other guilds, killing each other in the middle of the city. I remember spending a shitload of gold on some helm of invulnerability, thinking it actually made me invulnerable

I also put a lot of hours into Asheron's Call too. I had your typical memories there: first atlan weapon. Getting GSA (I opted for GSA pants + GSK top because it looked cooler, even though it took more time to buff). Killing Olthoi queen. Shit like that... Anyone who played AC should check this out: https://web.archive.org/web/20041023073950fw_/http://www.dizzarian.com:80/acmages/Dizzarian.html

Anyone?

The single player Ultima games have you travelling all over the place too.

Sadly exploration and discovery is dead in MMOs now. It was a popular thing in early MMOs because the whole internet gaming thing was new so MMOs were all about "Wow you can explore a whole world and run into REAL LIFE people from all over the globe and explore and socialise with them"

Now at this point everyone is over that. So its all about the addictive gameplay and trying to keep you hooked with repetitive dungeons and smaller maps now since exploration isnt a thing as everything can be activated through the UI so you can quickly constantly run through the addictive dungeons and PVP over and over.

In all my time here i've never seen dark ages mentioned here. Nexus kingdom of the winds i've seen mentioned but that's a different game albiet similar.

>could view other peoples equipment screen which amazed me at the time
>had to have a mentor to guide you into a class, you could later pm or talk with your mentor for help or advice
>different towns had different laws, and the guards were actual players
>some guards were corrupt and could jail you
>could get banished from towns
>every big quest it gave you an achievement thing in your journal others could view
>could have jail time and other stuff in the journal too for the bad players
>different religions and magic systems

You could even troll if you wanted to. I remember you could lure new players down to deep levels of dungeons, trap the exit and lure monsters to them, you could even loot their corpse after 5 minutes stealing their goods. Good times on that game.
>>
>>4140204
I really miss that feeling. Exploration is one of my favorite things to do in games like these.

Some of my best memories of old MMOs is just me exploring the world and getting lost.
>>
Just think.. we could have a pre-trammel shard on the official game servers RIGHT NOW, but the faggot that made IN POR YLEM turned them down like the fucking BITCH ass nigger he is.

Fuck that nignog.
>>
>>4140714
Vendors (and being able to sell trash to NPCs) ruined UO
>>
>>4140720
Item modifiers ruined UO for me.
Also, Aethetics changing.

The sprites were so good then they started adding more and more ugly amateur shit, runing the whole flow of the art design

I played UO but man, I wasn't there for that. I laughed at it when I found out because you could always kill British in almost every Ultima game and it was funny in this situation, because British said he forgot to put on his invulnerability toggle on. That player just wanted to see what would happen when he cast firewall. I miss that game.

the comics still exist lol
>>
There's a little java game I play (www.aberoth.com) which I find very similar to UO in the 1990s. You can attack anyone, drop stuff anywhere and it remains, stuff drops when you die, etc
>>
>>4140714
Huh ? In por yelm isnt pre tram. They would have to start from scratch to pre tram server. In por isnt even a osi clone, they exist as free servers though.
>>
>>4140506
Finding a major lore place like a temple or a big statue somewhere or a secret underground home. None of that are in mmos anymore as they're not 'relevant' and would waste travel time etc.
>>
>>4140479
I played Dark Ages. I found it frustrating as nobody would mentor me at first to do the dungeon. I think I settled with Monk just because a Monk would mentor me.

I also remember a website where people would post videos on Dark Ages. Like fun parody ones.
>>
>>4140479
Also wasn't there a legit player ran government system and family system? With marriages and adoption.

I never saw people roleplay there but I remember tons of geocities and angelfire sites about backstories on their characters.
>>
>>4140817
That's probably why they ended up removing the mentor system but I had good experiences with it. Mine always helped me with any questions, gave me gold and other stuff, really felt like a true mentor to help guide my newbie self.

>>4140821
I don't remember the marriage system but the government system was great, you could vote who was the new guards and all sorts. There was alot of bullshit drama though with different town guards and certain people which made me laugh.

Here's a pic I found of marriages. There was a family tree system and you could adopt another player as a kid. I wanna say it was their version of a guild actually? But probably not.

reminds me of ragnarok online weddings

and there was always that one guy who would unleash 100 wild branches so the city/wedding got over run by monsters which was always hilarious.
>>
>>4136196
Played Yserbius, The Realm, Meridian 59, Everquest beta, Asheron's Call, and Subspace (does that count?). Also lots of muds and the like.

Never played UO because I just didn't enjoy Ultima games.
>>
>>4140994
Watching old MMO videos on youtube is pretty funny and also slightly weird. There's a bunch from WoW in the Cathedral District, some in FF11 as that had a marriage system too.

I've only ever been on one MMO wedding and that was on WoW and they had it on the deeproad tram. Not IN it, ON the tram itself. They were Gnomes and it was an RP server. The Wife was on the tram itself and the groom was on the platform. This meant the tram was constantly going back and forth when they said their vows.

It was pretty funny.
>>
>>4140994
Griefing and Trolling was really easy in older MMOs. Now they have a bunch of restrictions to stop stuff like that.

Just how people could easily kite high level bosses to newbie towns, or summon demons and shit to reign hell on the main hub or kill quest give NPCs constantly or corpse camp or lead newbies to PVP or high level areas and steal their gear.
>>
I think the heavy exploration aspect and the aspect of a fully interactable world and what you could do with it is one of the reasons why older MMOs were so roleplaying heavy and stuff like roleplaying ultima shards are still around today. It was more than just the game.

The gameplay mechanics allowed you to be a part of the world even if it didn't affect the grander scheme of things. It was just there to immerse you and that immersiveness allowed for good roleplaying.

The reason why most RP communities in modern MMOs die out so quickly is that these days it's even difficult to just do something like sit down on a chair in a bar, never mind have like a house and stuff.
>>
>>4140808
They offered the creator of IPY to make a pre-trammel server for OSI, like 10 years ago. He truned it down like a smug piece of shit, then closed his own servers down multiple times and finally retired from the scene.
>>
>>4140142
Loved that game, didn't really think anyone remembered it
>>
>>4140814
Or exploring an out of the way place and finding a rare monster, killing it and being excited when you realize the item it dropped is actually worth something.

>What are some of your classic online gaming memories?
I remember waiting in line for quest items in Asheron's Call... People actually formed lines and waited for key item respawns. Anyone who cut lines was shamed on IGN's message boards & pretty much hated by everyone after that

Pic not Asheron's Call, but related
>>
>>4141549
I miss team ups to take down rare, epic monsters.
I remember on City of Heroes doing a massive team up to defeat the sea monster for a badge.

Also people teaming up to quest in general. You don't need to do that now, they're too easy. Also the fact that the teams generated for dungeons are people from multiple servers in most MMOs now. So nobody interacts as you'll never see these people again.

You used to have regulars you did multiple runs with.
>>
>>4140479
I remember grinding attack skills on other players in the woodland's wasteland area. I played more NexusTK than DA. Indos ruined Nexus.

I remember assholes doing that in FFXI outside of Selbina (from the Valkurm Dunes). A train of area goblins and/or that asshole that you must fight for the WHM AF weapon. Soooooo many dead bodies...
>>
>>4141019
Griefing in older mmos was the best part of it.
>>
>>4142571
I did that alot too, you could leave it attacking if you right clicked and ctrl'ed or something too. It took ages to level up those skills.

Only MMO I ever really got into was BatMUD. Sunk countless hours into that with my friends back in school.
I've tried a few other muds since then, like Zombie and Aardwolf, but I can't seem to find any that really hold my attention. That said, I still really like the idea of MUDs and have even toyed with the idea of making my own.

Helbreath was addictive. The beta test was the most fun I had playing it and I could never recapture the experiences I had while building my character, gaining new equipment, and exploring as a low level noob. I remember forming parties to work my way through the dangerous midlands or dungeon to raid the opposing town, only to become decimated by the NPC town guard's spam casted lightning spell.

Lol sure
>activate auto-buff plugin on Decal

Celdon looked badass tho
