Real cartridges have special hardware for memory mapping. Playing a game is not as simple as flashing the ROM in memory because the same hardware will not access every game correctly.

Good flash carts like PowerPak have an FPGA to emulate the mappers, and other features like extra graphics RAM for Kirby's Adventure.

Bad flash carts like MiniCard SD just run an emulator on the system hardware. They suck.

It looks like that EverDrive N8 has a Cyclone II FPGA inside it. Those are not cheap.
