Kiki Kaikai Nano no Kuro Mantle/Pocky and Rocky on the SNES is one of the best games from the 16 bit era. It's a top down run and gun shooter. Excellent in co-op.

I guess Chaos Engine inspired a couple of developers (when the Bitmap Brothers still were the rage). Back in the day when reading some reviews in gaming magazines "Jurassic Park" (SNES) was often called out for being a "Chaos Engine Clone".

Zelda 2 is the one that immediately comes to mind. Action that is easily good enough to stand on its own and the RPG elements don't detract from it.

Some retro action RPGs that aren't necessarily as good as pure action games, but that I still like include Cadash (arcade version), Zelda 1, The Guardian Legend, The Battle of Olympus, and Star Control 2.

Golvellius is slow as shit and is filled with painfully dull enemies. The easiest and simplest enemies in Zelda 2 are comparable to the most complex and dangerous enemies in Golvellius. Zelda is also incomparably better in level design and the main character's moveset. It's not even close.

Harvest fuckin' Moon. It's an absolute classic but it's hardly ever talked about, I feel. If you've played Stardew Valley but not this, you gotta play this, go to the roots of SV's inspiration. It makes both games so much more charming when you really see that.

It's more of a historical note than what something someone should play in 2017. This is before Link to the Past mind you. If ou were a kid in 89, you'd think it's the coolest shit ever. The game's biggest flaws are same-y backgrounds that make it more confusing than it should be. They were trying to make a game better than The Legend of Zelda, and in many ways they succeeded. Not all of Kitamura's games are the best , but they all show real creativity.

Are you shitting me? Secret of Mana combat is even more shallow and less interactive than Final Fantasy. It's slow, tedious, and takes no skill. It is positively abysmal as an action game.

The music is great. The graphics are great. It's really easy, and lots of people can ignore bad mechanics as long as they aren't challenging. Don't be fooled by any of that. Secret of Mana is a 0/10 action game.

There isn't too too many Zelda type top downs. The series kinda has a monopoly on that style.
