In Mexico it was more accesible, I think there were official stores, there was the Club Nintendo Magazine, it was just far more promoted there.

But here in the south it was expensive as fuck and besides having the posibility of getting a Famiclon for 1/10 of the price (and this applies to the cartridges as well of course that were different), the "Family" was the console of the people.

This didn't happen with the SNES though, but 16bit consoles were not that popular, if you wanted one you had to be able to afford the real stuff, actually owning a PlayStation was cheaper simply because of the CDs that were 90% pirate copies that costed less than 2 bucks. This is why the N64 was also for richfags here and it was more common to just rent it.
