>First half is riddled with bad puzzles, tedious as fuck backtracking and running in circles and waiting around for certain times of the day, with a bit of platforming here and there
>Second half is pure platforming and bossfights and it's actually fun

Why did they do this? No wonder so many people hate this game, they probably didn't bother making it past the tedium hell that was the nitro and mandragora level.
Also I just beat the game on Hard mode and it rewarded me with absolutely nothing, though it wasn't THAT much harder.
>>
Absolutely agree, the first half is a bore but the endgame is great.
>>
The villa is more interesting than the later parts.
>>
>>4124610
So this game actually gets good at some point?
>>
>first half is shit, second half is great
Does that change at all with Legacy of Darkness?
>>
>>4124610
Mandragora and Nitro aren't even a hard part once you know what you have to do.
Also, no, there's straightforward action levels on the first half (castle entrance, the 2nd level, is probably the closest 3dvania ever got to being classicvania in 3D), just go forward through stairs, beating bats and skull pillars and evading hazards, and beat a multiple headed skeleton serpent boss at the end, no backtracking, no puzzle.
Anyway, what this guy said: >>4124623
>>
>>4124861
>Mandragora and Nitro aren't even a hard part once you know what you have to do.
It's not that it's hard, it's that even if you figure out the most efficient route through the level it's still a massive pain in the ass and takes like an hour to complete. It's just not fun at all.
>>
>>4124891
it's a long level, but the nitro part is like less than 10 minutes.
>>
>>4124904
Yes, it's a long and boring level.
>>
>>4124917
I liked fighting the vampires and exploring the castle around.
>>
>>4124610

Legacy of Darkness fixes all these issues and contains the two scenarios from 64.
>>
>>4124923
Vampires were a pain in the ass, you have to whip them like a thousand times, and I hated how each time you went through a room with vampires you HAD to kill them or you couldn't leave, same with the room with the lizardmen. And this is the only stage that pulls that bullshit, it's like they really wanted to make it as tedious as possible.
>>
>>4124931
I remember you can skip these rooms after the 1st time you fight them... maybe I'm remembering wrong.
>>
>>4124949
Maybe you played it too long ago anon, but I cleared the damn thing three times in the past two days and the suffering is still fresh in my mind. You can't skip those rooms, ever, believe me I tried.
>>
This game was awesome. It isnt even that hard. You can beat it in 3 hours in one life if you know what youre doing. I love the villa, its like a adventure game level, but everything else is just linear betemup/platforming
>>
Are you guys aware that there's a dodge mechanic? It's never explained on the game or even on the game manual, I think, but if you title the control stick either right, left or down, You can make Reinhardt or Carrie dodge attacks to whatever direction you titled, it's extremely useful when fighting enemies like vampires.
I only noticed about this many years later after my first playtrhough.
>>
>>4125089
Sorry, in order to dodge, you need to press A+tilt in the direction you want to dodge at the same time.
>>
>>4125089
>I only noticed about this many years later after my first playtrhough.
Didn't you ever accidentally dodge into a bottomless pit trying to get into a platform that was behind you?
>>
>>4125719
I don't think so. Every time I wanted to jump, I would press (not tilt) the stick first, and then jump, never both at the same time.
>>
>>4125723
I'm always forgetting to do that, which is why I suck at 3D platformers of the era.
>>
Honestly, what are you supposed to do?

>get mandragora first
>get to the wall and can't put it down
>have to restart the game from scratch
>this time get the nitro
>walk 30 minutes back to the wall
>still can't place it
>forced to blow yourself up and quit the game

No wonder most people gave up there.
>>
>>4125852
I never even made it that far, to be honest. I gave up on the game pretty early on.
>>
Is Castlevania 64 the new game hipsters say they love since IV turned into such a touchy subject on /vr/?
>>
>>4125852
Why can't you place it or put it down? You definitely can.
>>4125874
Castlevania in general became a "touchy subject" on /vr/, it only took 1 shitposter to ruin any and all CV discussion.

3Dvania is a different thing so I guess regular CV shitposting doesn't affect it.
Plus, nobody says it's a perfect masterpiece or anything, just not as bad as a lot of people believe it is.
>>
>>4125852
It's at least two trips through the stage since you have to go pick up the nitro and place it nearby, then get the key to the mandragora room, go pick up the mandragora all the way back at the beginning of the stage, then go all the way back to the wall with the nitro and make it explode. That's assuming it's not your first time playing and thus you know the answer to the puzzle at the end. Then there's the other nitro you have to carry through a ton of rooms full of hazards including those really thin bridges you can't fall off of lest the nitro explodes and kills you.

Why do you need mandragora to make the nitro explode, yet when you're carrying it it explodes as soon as you jump or get hit?
>>
>>4125881
So /vr/ only likes 3Dvania and Simon's Quest because everyone can agree they are shitty, thus they cannot be shitposted about? I like your way of thinking, lad. We should also start ironically liking Amigavania.
>>
>>4125901
What? I didn't say anything remotely close to that.
Also, /vr/ isn't one person (but one person can indeed ruin discussion for everybody else).
>>
>>4125909
What I mean is, they aren't held up to as high a regard as say, IV or X, so people are less prone to going apeshit whenever someone tries to troll their favorite CV entry. It doesn't work on 3Dvania because people acknowledge its faults already, but can still find good in the game. The problem isn't the shitposters, it's the bitches who can't take any criticisms or negativity.

>>4125921
>the problem isn't the shitposters
>>
>>4125921
What do you mean? CV threads are full of trolling, for every game in the series.
In fact, I haven't seen anybody go "apeshit" over "criticism" (I'd call it pure shitposting and bait, though) for IV or X, it's always the same people saying the same things, then australia gets his posts deleted, complains, and nobody else cares.
I guess there isn't much to discuss about Castlevania anymore, except when we try to find out what happened to the devs of the original Castlevania, that's some productive posting, but most of the times it's shitposting.
>>
>>4125936
What does it matter finding out who made CV? Japan's gaming scene is garbage nowadays, and it's unlikely they have a desire to return to it.

You came to the wrong website. This place is for wasting time and letting out your inner demons.
>>
>>4125962
EVERY DAY I THINK ABOUT MY MOTHER DYING, BUT NOT IN FEAR OF THAT HAPPENING!
>>
>>4125909
>but one person can indeed ruin discussion for everybody else
No they can't, they can only ruin it for whiny babies who can't handle the banter. You think it's ruined for "everyone" because, like the whiny baby you are, you think your problems are so big they affect everyone.
>>
>>4125719
Yes that definitely does happen sometimes.
>>
>>4125983
>banter
systematically shitposting the same shit again, and again, and again even after nobody else replies to it and mods delete your spam and ban you isn't "banter", it's more like autism. Banter requires wit, and also another person caring.
Castlevania threads reached a point of exhaustion, there's not a lot to discuss, and the shitposting is always the same so it doesn't even work as bait.
>>
>>4126039
>people are posting things I don't like!
Duly noted.
>>
>>4125962
Dude, I also remember being 12 and browsing /b/ for the first time, the internet hate machine xD
>>
>>4126045
>dat reading comprehension
>>
>>4126049
Yeah we all go through phases, I'm guessing you're still at the one where you think that now that you're 18 you're a mature big boy and that you've "grown out" of "shitposting" and actively try to turn 4chan into the intellectual discussion paradise it never was by reporting posts and whining all day and calling everything "bait" and constantly pointing out how you didn't fall for it. Don't worry, you'll come to your senses eventually, then you'll enjoy this place again.
>>
>>4126061
Don't worry, when you turn 21 you realize that being an edgelord is also just another phase and you just focus on using 4chan to discuss retro video games with other anons.
>>
>>4126073
When you turn 22 you'll stop using "edgelord" as a blanket term for people who enjoy things you don't.
>>
>>4126081
>reading comprehension
>>
>>4126049
You know, he's not wrong.
>>
>>4126106
I think different people use 4chan for different things.
I use certain threads in different boards to download (and share, in return) stuff that's not easily accessible, that has nothing to do with "inner demons" or whatever that means. Wasting time? Maybe. But if I get something I'm looking for, be it information, files or whatever, then I think that's productive.
I admit /vr/ is not one of those boards though, I just come here to chill and talk about games, but still no "inner demons" on my part.
>>
>>4126109
You're too hung up on the terminology, "letting out your inner demons" is simply a prettier way of saying "having fun".
>>
>>4126118
Gotcha, I'm not a native eng speaker. I assumed it meant "being a jerk" or something like that.

Moot left 4chan years ago, and Hiro is the admin (and thus, owner) of this site.
4chan is now japanese, it all went full circle.

But that's a shitty speedrun strat that skips over the more interesting aspects of the game. If you enjoy fun you're gonna stay there and fight.

I'd say if after the Villa (level 3) you aren't enjoying it, then you're not gonna like the rest.
>>
Bought this when I was on a Castlevania/vampire kick and then it fizzled out (and I got laid off) but maybe sometime I'll come back and finish it.
That and read Interview with a Vampire, which is still sitting in my car.
>>
>>4124610
Here's a review for a game that takes five hours to get good.

"I spent four and a half hours on this game and I lost all interest."
>>
>>4125901

There's some truth in that, yes. 4chan is only good at talking about things that are simple, unsubtle, and unpretentious. Nobody feels very seriously threatened by Castlevania 64 or by Simon's Quest, because their severe flaws are so obvious. If something is already trashy then you can easily use it as common ground with people who are themselves trashy.

For the same reason, /an/ is one of the nicer boards, because anybody can appreciate animals; it's simple and childish to like animals. And /d/ is even nicer, because anybody can easily get a weird boner, and it's hard (though not impossible) to be uppity and haughty about your weird boner. Meanwhile /lit/, /mu/, and /pol/ are hellholes, because those topics are hard to appreciate without some recognition of their enormous complexity. 4chan is utterly uselessly inept at talking about complex things.

Super Castlevania IV has too many good points to be easily pinned down by the majority of people as just a mediocre mess, and too many bad points to be universally accepted as a masterpiece. So 4chan can't digest it. But 4chan is also too blind and stupid to drop it altogether, and thus is doomed to perpetually choke on it.
