Why couldn't these feel good tunes be the future of vocal tracks for Sonic? I like what we got in the Adventure games, but these are just so much better.

They seem to be bringing them back for the OC-donut-steal stages in Sonic Forces, sort of, the female vocals and synths at least. I think they just felt the need to change the vibe and image of the series with the 90s coming to an end and all that. I love Sonic R's music but it was the right decision, you could never have sold my kid self on this cheesy shit as I preferred the rockier, cheesier shit.

Sonic Heroes sort of had songs in this style. Especially the main theme and Team Rose's theme. Tails's theme in Sonic Adventure was pretty upbeat.

I guess they just felt that these songs didn't really fit the tone of the Sonic series, because, well, they didn't. Some people complained that they didn't even fit Sonic R, although at least they fit better in that case. I'm not really complaining though. I love the rock-inspired tracks from SA and SA2. I love the music from pretty much all the Sonic games, all the way up through the newest ones.

I loved how the SA1-onward rock songs sounded.
Really, all of the songs Johnny Gioeli sang for Crush 40 wouldn't have been too out of place on an old Hardline album (other than the fairly odd lyrics). Live and Learn especially gives me that vibe.

I played the PC version with a no-cd crack, which then launched with any CD you had in the drive, but still using the audio cd tracks for whatever disc you had inside.

You're right, I knew it was bad to repost an image I took a while back and I only remembered the 3 she did vocals for I had on my usual MSR playlist: Holding On, It Doesn't Really Matter, and Am I Only Dreaming. I paired those with other songs with the other ones I felt were best for the song rotation when I played the game. I kind of ignored and forgotten the other tracks she did in the game.

Yeah, I got Sonic R back in the day from a small independent videogame news/review website sweepstakes. I assumed I got it because no one marked a Saturn game for their two top choices of prize to win. So I was pretty happy to get the game for free, I was initially immediately appalled at the lyrics, switched to non-lyrics for the gameplay (replays always played the opposite), however not soon after the replays lyrics did grow on me and I honestly liked the Sonic R songs with lyrics (in small doses like the replays). Even back then no one else liked the lyrics. I was also honestly surprised when I first heard some songs in MSR and I immediately recognized Sega's lack of budget hiring the same low budget singer (unlike Sony which featured their music label and the budget for more songs for Gran Turismo soundtracks). I will say as the only singer Sega could afford, TJ Davis made the most of it and made Sonic R and MSR memorable to me.

I have to admit I didnt own Sonic R or a Saturn until after 2000. I remember seeing sonci R in Toys R Us in 1996-7 and being really impressed because I was a huge sonic fan. I just couldn't afford all of sega's consoles. I really wanted Chaotix as well because I saw them in the comics. I am slowly buying Saturn games but I do have Sonic Gems collection with Fighters but I wish Chaotix was on it. I really loved Sega's low budget charm and edgy fun personality in the 90s. Also because I live near SF I always got to drive past their SoA HQ.

Yeah, being a Saturn owner in its day, I thought Traveller's Tales did magic to get the effects shown off on the Saturn in Sonic R. I guess part of the joy was winning it and paying nothing, but I never thought it was a bad game, quite the opposite.

They sure did push Chaotix too at the time. It is the system (or peripheral) seller to me once it got to clearance. I think it shows off the effects and colors well. Even the sound was enhanced with a few more channels.

It is a shame that Sega was running on fumes making games. I kind of believe that Sega's creators were more musicians than game designers or artists, since so many of their classic games revolve around the music. Somehow their budget did give TJ Davis some limelight but nothing more.

It must be cool around Sega then. Were there any memorable promotion events? In my area, Sega is reduced to a single 2-story barcade. Their focus is on those large arcade only machines, like ones with hydraulics that are more a ride with a game (like 8-player in stock car seats Virtua Racing), DDR, or light gun games. Chaotix was SUPPOSED to be on it, it was in the much of the pre-release screenshots and press releases and I can't tell you how disappointed I was when they took it out. Gens got 32x emulation going around that time so I played it anyway but we're still waiting on that console port.

There was just a better vibe back then before 911. All the arcades closed because rent is ridiculously expensive. Now SoA moved to LA and Zynga/facebook took their old building in SF which is owned by uber and the city fucking blows.
