Post all you best chart you've got. Keep it /vr/ related
>>4114553
There are like ten charts
>>4114912
Then we will post all ten of them.
>>4114949
The picture used for Goemon II there is the Famicom game, not the SFC one.
>>4114968
>Mario Golf GBC
unironically patrician RPG
>>4114553
>Suggesting Clockwork Knight
>Not suggesting Magical Drop in the Japanese section

>>4114968
not even a bad list
Any chart on dreamcast piracy?
>>4114945
The old Lenged of Dragoon conundrum of where the "the" is in reality.
>Legend of the Dragoon
>The Legend of Dragoon
>>4114968
GBA is not retro.
Alert: massive chart lists incoming
>>4114553
Deep fear in Jap chart when there is a PAL version.
>>4117668
There is also an iso of the un-released NTSC-U version out there.
>>4117654
Great list, so many hours...
>>4114553
>Saturn version of The House of the Dead
Wew
>>4114553
I'm doing a couple of these.
Still not sure if I should include non-linear / free-roaming shooters (e.g. Fantasy Zone) or not.
>>4119418
What are the must play on the list? I only played musha and I liked it a lot.
>>4114553
Is it just me, or did Japanese Saturn games suddenly become much more expensive than they were about a year and a half ago? Did a lot of Saturn collectors jump ship to Japanese games because they drove up the prices of English games too much?
>>4114943
>SSF has rendered obsolete by Mednafen
On what planet? It still has much higher compatibility and accuracy.
Does anyone have the chart with different japanese adventure games and how difficult they are to play in terms of fluency?
Are you refering to this one? >>4114892
>>4119857
>What are the must play on the list?
Imo, Thunder Force IV, Musha, Battle Mania: Daiginjou, Gley Lancer, Gaiares, Eliminate Down, Lords of Thunder and Thunder Force III are the must-plays.
Personally, I don't like Silpheed that much, but many people hold it in high regard
>I only played musha and I liked it a lot.
You should try Sega CD's Robo Aleste then, it's Musha's followup, just not as great (but still good, though).
Spriggan on the PC Engine CD is also very similar to both.
>>4115343
It's clearly:
>The Legend of The Dragoon
>>4114553
>top 5 games by popular vote
>radiant silvergun
hmmm....
>>4122191

>>4122268
I don't know what he was getting at either.
>>4114553
There's a disturbing lack of Puyo Puyo there.
>>4122126

>>4119418
>I'm doing a couple of these.
How do I make one? Please teach me how to do it.
>>4114553
I made this today, feel free to give feedback or more suggestions.
>>4122693
Where did the left edge go?
>>4122693
the one second in the middle from the bottom doesn't have a name and I want to know the name
released by taito in 1992...
>>4122693
Check out Getsu Fuma Den
>>4122810
Little Samson, cartridge probably goes for over $1000 nowadays.
>>4122810
little samsom aka hipster wallet rape
>>4122693
Mitsume ga tooru aka 3 Eyes Boy.
>>4122858
Fuck me sideways, this game is excellent.
>>4122858
yes this game is fucking dope
>>4122810
OH!! sorry, yeah it's little samson.

Updated list.
>>4123783
I really like Ninja Jajamaru: Ginga Daisakusen.
>>4123783
Also Armadillo is fun. The name might be Armadillo something. My only grip about that game is that some levels areas are re-used in later levels, kinda like the Captain America and the avengers game on NES.
>>4117654
what about EU4 tho
>>4123783
You could add Kaiketsu Yanchamaru 3.
Bright graphics, catchy music, good level design, fun controls and mechanics, you can use your baton to bounce off walls.
Bosses are similar to Megaman's.
>>4114945
Whew. Some piping hot OPINIONS going on there.
>>4114964
>Crono Trigger
sigh
>>4123783
>holy diver
>death metal
Uhh no? Heavy Metal. Quite the difference there, the game is a direct reference to Ronnie James Dio who practically pioneered Heavy metal, his debut album was HOLY DIVER, hate to be that guy anon but as a rock enthusiast and retro game enthusiast had to clear that up
>>4127449
Sup James.
>>4114553
No Sakura Taisen? You have the picture of Segata with Sakura and you won't even recommend her game?
>>4122664
???
Google Search + Paint (it's a very simplistic template) and you'll be fine.
Do these count?
http://kultcds.com/Upload/Charts/
I want to make more charts like these but I don't really know what to put on them. There are so many charts already with "good JRPGs" and such, but maybe there's some console or genre of games that would really benefit from being showcased in an animated medium like this.
I've thought about doing something like "the most graphically impressive games on various retro systems," but the layout would have to be kind of weird to accommodate different image resolutions and aspect ratios.
Also have this
>>4127554
very cool, really.
maybe leave out the boxart as it takes up a lot of space but isn't essential to what you're trying to do here.
then you can have smaller nameplates and a larger footage area.
anyways, very cool.
>>4127449
Ah!! It's no problem, I'm not into metal so I'm very sorry for the confusion. I'll be sure to fix it with the next iteration.
>>4126132
Isn't that a licensed game?? I'll add it but for the most part I've been trying to avoid using licensed games. However if it's upon recommendation from other users I'll add it.
>>4128054
It's not a licensed game as far as I know, it's a Irem video game franchise known in the west as Nikki Kid, but the 3rd game (which I think it's by far the best) wasn't localized. It did get a Mario hack bootleg called "Super Mario 14" though, that's how I played it.
On the other hand, Mitsume ga tooru is a licensed title, based on a manga by Osamu Tezuka. You shouldn't dismiss licensed games though, especially in retro times, licensed games could many times be among the best.
>>4129650
I know, i'm a fan of Tezuka's work anyway. I just didn't want people to think they needed people to know the prior work. However I remembered already before you responded both the bootleg, and the actual game.
Does anybody have more mega drive charts?
>>4131675

>>4123783
I'd put the titles above the screenshots for readability. perhaps at least make the game titles larger and bold/underlined so that people can get the straight dope easily
>>4131831
Excellent news, I can't wait to see it.
Bumping while I continue to work on this
>>4134454
Doing God's work, anon.
>>4134454
ooh that's a much smarter layout
>>4114924
old as fuck does any one have an updated version?
Anyone got a Western RPG one?
>>4117657
>no sin and punishment
>DK 64
>the new tetris
Bump.
Interesting that this chart takes the lauded Bomberman '94 down a peg in favor of N64 Bomberman games.
>>4134454
What kind of programming language are you using?
>>4136290
It's Avisynth. Not really a proper programming language, more of a scripting system for describing tasks in non-linear video editing. It has very limited control flow (no loops, no conditionals other than the ternary operations you see in my screenshot). I'm using it in a way it was definitely not designed to be used, and should probably be using something else more modern.
I think in the past it was primarily used by encoders for anime fansubbing groups to apply filters like inverse telecine, duplicate frame decimation, line darkening, warpsharpening, etc. I'm not sure if anyone still uses it.
I'm basically just using it to overlay some text and short video clips on top of a blank template image I drew in paint, and then stack them all up next to each other in a grid.
>>4122693
>no hello kitty world
what the fuck ree
>>4131831

Might as well put Advanced V.G. 2.

Thanks anon.
Almost done here, mainly just need to source a few more video clips and clean up some little miscellaneous things. And then of course render the webm which takes a while on my shitty computer.
>>4135378
The New Tetris is actually pretty cool.
>>4138712
before you're finished, can I recommend this one
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QFwatYnGfV8
it's really amazing pure 2D action
Don't die just yet
>>4123783
I would add this one.
Finally done with part one. Second part later.
Still just using the exact list from >>4131831
I don't know who made that list. I hadn't even heard of half those games before, but it was interesting researching them to get the info for this chart.
>>4142321
there's an actual reason that generation is basically ignored -- it was wildly unsuccessful (Colecovision was on its way to potential success, but they fucked themselves over with the ADAM being shit, all combined with the US game market crashing due to oversaturation)
ultimately, all those machines should be considered the start of the third generation (hell, the SG-1000 came out the same day as the Famicom)
>>4143490
>makes fantastic OC
>thread reaches second page without one single response to said OC
you disappoint me /vr/
anyways, really great stuff. these charts make me want to try out games a lot more than just the static ones.
>>4143490
Jesus Christ man, that's an amazing job.
>>4143490
Really nice, thank you.
>>4143515
The argument seems to be that there's a tech gap, that the systems of the early 80s like Colecovision were more advanced to the point of being visually different in a big way from the systems of the late 70s. Since there's a similar tech gap between e.g. Famicom and SG-1000 graphics or Atari 5200 and 7800, it would be weird to use that argument to put "generation 2.5" inside the third generation.
I think the conclusion we should take from this idea of a "lost generation" is that the video game market was crashed by not just over-saturation, but a too-fast upgrade cycle not justified by the technology of the time. It makes no sense to release a new console every five years when you have 15 competitors and nobody has enough market share to support an "ecosystem." The Atari 2600 was vastly more successful than the "superior" 5200 because it had enough time to breathe, even if it didn't have room to breathe between all the competitors.
By the 80s, Nintendo went onto a sufficiently slow release cycle to give their consoles time to grow and build market share. Sega slowed their release cycle slightly and for a while enjoyed major success, but then they started to speed it up again out of fear of competition, which led to disaster for them. They released too many add-ons for the Mega Drive, pushed the Saturn out too soon to beat Sony to market, and awkwardly squeezed the Dreamcast out half a generation early on top of that. You could say that Nintendo's biggest failure of recent years has been the Wii U and that even that failure was caused by a poorly timed release cycle. The relative success of the Switch does show how a brand can recover from a passed-over generation, however (in a way that Sega and Atari mostly failed to do).
I wonder if there is a chart with good western /vr/ games, mostly for cart based consoles
No charts for the game boy family?
Someone should make a chart of every 2.5D FPS game (every FPS before Quake).
Second part of >>4143490
It always seems to take longer than I think it's going to take to finish these.
Some of the games aren't even fully 2D but I guess the original anon who compiled this list considered them fitting enough anyway.
>>4146319
Yeah, since you can't really scroll webms I had to design it with a minimum screen res in mind. It looks ok at 1080p and up.
>>4146229
Awesome!
>>4114553
>no Sonic R
>no Sonic 3D Blast

what's a good emulator for saturn? I tried compiling yabause on xcode because the latest build (from 2014...) didn't work on sierra
>>4148034
No such thing, especially if you are looking for open source. SSF is an old windows-only saturn emulator from Japan that has the best compatibility. You need decent hardware to make 3D games playable. More recently Mednafen has a Saturn core that is currently under development and getting better. Most people will tell you it's not quite as good as SSF yet. That's probably your best shot in the long run though.
Yabause is an older free/open source Saturn emulator that unfortunately has bad compatibility and performance. I think I have used it in the past to play Saturn Bomberman with 10 players though, since it had easy-to-set-up multitap support. But it's not going to be very good for anything graphically complex. You often have to disable entire video layers just to see the polygons on the screen.
>>4149315
Voynich manuscript shit? This is freaking me out.
>>4149315
Wait a second, are these all visual novels?
>>4143490

>>4114553
both exhumed and power slave?
legit troll chart
Info on this chart? What does it say, what is it about?
And most importantly: do any of these have an English fan translation?
>>4136214
I say it every time, but Saturn Bomberman is incredibly overrated. If you turn off WiiWare Bomberman's motion-controlled items, it's just as good if not better.
>>4149907
I went ahead and labeled them. I just used reverse image search on all the covers.
They are all sound novels, i.e. mostly just still images, music, and text on the screen.
I doubt any of them has an English translation for the Playstation version, but several of them have either English versions available on another platform (smartphone, PC, etc.) or subtitled playthrough videos on Youtube. I did find a bit of information about most of them here:
http://endaso.blogspot.com/2014/03/playstation-horror-sound-novels.html
>>4146732
so contrarian
>>4149886
Some people like them fps on the crappy side.
I liked the jaguar AvP
>>4150212
Amazing, thanks a lot anon!! Looks like it's really time for me to learn Japanese though. I didn't know I wanted this kind of stuff up until now.
>>4136214
I'm surprised an image I made got posted. I actually updated it mostly becauseI think overrated the fuck out of Super 4.
>>4136214
>>4150953
I might just not be noticing them it but no Bomberman GB(US)/Bomberman GB 2(JAP) or Bomberman GB 3 on the list? You got Warioblast is Bombman GB 1 as im sure you are aware.
Curious where those would fit on your list.
>>4150994
Bomberman has a A LOT of games, so some have to be excluded or else that list would larger than it already is. That said GB2 and GB3 are slightly better than Wario Blast but I would really just put them on the same tier.
>>4146732
87% correct
>>4143490
the PlayStation version of mickeys wild adventure has criminally long load times. Like worse than MK3 ultimate and X-com
>>4150953
I own and have played a bit of Mega Bomberman, it's my first Bomberman game I've played.
Can't see it on your list, but where does it rank? Unless it's Bomberman 94?
>>4151059
It's just a port of 94.
>>4146732
>obsidian anything
>any where but shit tier
Heres my poor edit of RGB Masterclasses pro's and cons list for different ways to play GB(C) games.
>>4153058
Nice work
Is there a good neo geo chart?
>>4114964
>Space Shooters distinct from Shmup
>Shmup includes Super Metroid, Mega Man X, Contra Turrican hell everything in that section
>>4153058
Good job! So what's your favorite choice? Gotta admit I loooove the Super Game Boy
>>4153935
Not him, but I'd say GBP with an SNES controller adapter, just because SGB doesn't work with GBC-exclusive games.
For portable use, SP for sure.
>>4150953
What's wrong with the original Bomberman?
I think the list is also missing the jp-only Bomberman 64.
>>4146732
Lands of Lore III isn't that bad, EA will patch it any week now after they resurrect Westwood Studios.
>>4153043
Obsidian makes good rpgs that like old ones.
>>4153935
I really enjoy a frontlight modded GBC thank to it being able to use color pallets on GB games also the enhanced pallets on black cart games.
>>4154002
>What's wrong with the original Bomberman?
The original Bomberman is lackluster in... everything. No multiplayer, only one map and enemies. Which makes sense, since it was the first (well not really but you know what I mean) game but the game is still a slog to play through and doesn't get fun until you get the fire vest and become unstoppable and even that gets boring. It's not an absolutely terrible game, but there's no real reason to play it over the others.
>I think the list is also missing the jp-only Bomberman 64.
I honestly keep forgetting about that one.
>>4149952
>Saturn Bomberman
>Overrated
You best be joking. No other game does 10-Player on a single console. The opening and ending movies are kino and the levels are on point
>>4150252
but they are the same game, its just stupid that it has 2 spots.. like saturn fags need to put in eu and us release of a game
>>4114949
>recommending DKC3 but not DKC1
I feel immensely triggered. So much so, I'm not even going to get angry but instead dismiss this list as a pure troll. Whoever made this should be shot in a back alley and fed to roaming packs of stray dogs. Fuck that list.
>>4114892
anyone have one of these nice charts for PC-98 games?
that'd be good to see, i've never really explored that area beyond the touhous

>Xbox One & PS4 are on god-tier with okay d-pads
Hmmm...
>>4114949
>recommending the beavis and butthead game
why
>>4160596
embarassing to say this but where to get Book of Watermarks?
>>4160591
I tried the ds4 and it's not really that good, also the triggers are too small imo and let's not even mention that the gum on the stick wears off easily. The dpad is not as good as the nintendo ones, same deal for ds3.
>>4160798
Is the wii u pro controller that good? I want to buy it but I will only use it for retro since it has digital triggers which is not good for racing games.
>>4115343
I'm Jewish, and that obviously says Dragoon of Legend the.
>>4117669
...and people say the dreamcast had no games!
>>4122858
I remember this manga.
It was about an autistic guy who acquired extreme intelligence when someone exposed his third eye, so he had to mask it with a bandage and be retarded at all time, because his intelligence made him evil and vengeful.
Pretty retarded desu but fun read.
>>4160797
The fact that it is simple series makes it all the creepier. Like it could be an actual haunted game.
>>4161034
What are Simple Series games? I never heard of them
>>4161045
They are bargain bin games with minimal branding and advertising that were churned out en masse and sold at fixed bargain prices that were printed all over the box (1500 yen at that time, about $15).
They're cheap games of sketchy provenance--if there were ever going to be a real haunted/cursed game, it probably wouldn't say Konami or Capcom on the box, and it probably wouldn't make it onto the shelves next to well known full-price games.
>>4161053
Thanks for the quick reply! Are Simple Series games only found on PS1 and PS2? I'd be interested in trying some out
>>4161060
They were only for Playstation and later consoles I believe. Mostly not retro. I've heard some of the games especially from the PS2 era and beyond are actually good though.
>>4160940
Its gamecube LOL
>>4161060
Playstation, Dreamcast, Playstation 2, Wii, DS.
>>4160831

>>4156207
>10 player
Wow, so that's two more players than WiiWare's 8 players. Even if somebody has Saturn Bomberman and the adapter, nobody has ten Saturn controllers or even nine other friends that want to play Bomberman. Plus the sprites are tiny and quite shit. Yeah, it's overrated.
>>4162252
>nobody has ten Saturn controllers or even nine other friends that want to play Bomberman

Boys make me some chart about interesting obscure games. Better if it would be some art house games like cosmology of Kyoto or Eastern mind.

>He doesn't have a TV big enough

The Wii ones were pretty nice, you could make a character and use it across games and each game would unlock you different clothes. There were only 6 games on the Wii though, the ps2 had like 100+.

Are you me?
I always think they can break or some stupid excuse.
Is this true that they was writing shit for Saturn on asm?
>>4170140
Most devs would have written their games in C, but a lot of the technically better games would have been written in ASM for better performance. PS1 and N64 were probably no different.
>>4170146
I wonder how crash bandicoot works so fast on so weak hardware. They written it on lisp, so I guess they was writing it in FP style, so they used immutable data structures. Because of that it may lag as fuck on ps1. Or maybe they wasn't writing on fp style and it's just procedural crap just on lisp.
>>4170152
>I wonder how crash bandicoot works so fast on so weak hardware
Because the game is on-rails you can pre-compute depth / occlusion to eliminate overdraw. That is to say, the game engine never draws a pixel that ends up gets overdrawn by another one - so rendering is super efficient. The game also doesn't have to calculate depth, saving processing time.
Also that LISP scripting engine would have had to be written in ASM by Naughty Dog, so they pretty much wrote the game in ASM but made scripting game events easier for themselves.
>>4170129

I don't have any charts, but if you want recommendations I know some.
Fire Emblem
X-Com
Nobunaga's Ambition
Langrisser (aka Warsong)
Civilization
Heroes of Might and Magic
Nintendo Wars
Jagged Alliance
Arc the Lad
Front Mission
Super Robot Wars
Steel Panthers
For non-retro:
Disgaea
Sakura Taisen
Daibanchou
Sengoku Rance
Valkyria Chronicles
And a lot of continuations of retro series
Note that almost all of these are series, not individual games.
Also, Sengoku Rance and Daibanchou are eroge, so that 's something to keep in mind.

Any list of RPGS with good stories?

I got about 80% through Thief 1 and it just fucking bored me to death. I wish it was fun.
>>4186438
Wow, there's quite a few there I've not heard of. Thanks.

>doesn't give examples or arguments as to why it's boring
very insightful post, totally invalidates the opinions of the vast majority who enjoyed the game
>>4187552
I meant to express my anger for not being able to enjoy it. I'm not quite sure exactly, but I guess it doesn't feel very rewarding or interesting, and a lot of areas are just tedious. It may just be depression; I just finished Earthbound and I'm similarly upset that I didn't enjoy one bit of it.

Post it. It can be converted to a photoshop compatible file with cloudconvert.com and other tools.

Doubt it, you can't just convert a vector based filetype to a raster one, but anyway do what you want with it: https://my.mixtape.moe/fusrue.cdr
Any good n64 charts?

is everyone just going to overlook the fact that it "recommends" Sonic R because it's animated?
>>4189802
Sonic R is a good racing game. If it didn't use the character of Sonic you would probably have a totally different opinion about it.

Yes, that's a very fair correction. The analysis in that post is definitely from a US/NA perspective.

Appropriate.
It's a good game but damn is that appropriate.

What graphic tool would you recommend for creating such charts?
Finally, I could try GIMP, but I am retarted to grasp its potential.
>>4114553
THe chart layout in OP is nice - how many others exist?
>>4198618
I used scripts and command line tools like imagemagick to build the charts I made. Probably not what everyone else does, but it seems like it would be very tedious to lay everything out in a photo editor like GIMP and get all the spacing etc. pixel perfect.
Another option I've considered but not experimented enough with yet is writing up charts in a markup language like HTML or LaTeX. I think that would be very convenient for the ease with which you'd be able to edit the content or change the layout after the fact. Using a vector graphics editor like Inkscape or Illustrator might be a GUI-based way to achieve similar results, but I don't know anything about those sorts of programs.
