What I think Shiggy meant was that it tried to tell the story of Super Mario Bros. instead of telling a new story set in the world of Super Mario Bros, which is something I agree with.

If ever Nintendo's wounds heal completely and they finally allow Mario to be in a movie again, they shouldn't try to tell an origin story, they should make a new story, and do one that would work as a stand alone movie and not just a love letter to Mario fans.

That being said, if he really did mean that it was too much like the games then I don't know where that crazy japanese leprechaun's head is at.

It's a technically accurate comment. The movie changed things very drastically in a physical manner, but still tried to shove a ton of game stuff in there like explaining jumping powers, Yoshi, Koopa's dinosaur form, henchmen named after game enemies.
