Used to despise them, then I played TRAG, Vampire Hunter D, Dino Crisis 2, Soul of the Samurai, now I love them.

What kind of submarine games have tank controls?
Maybe Silent Hunter?

They aren't bad per se. They can be badly implemented, but if they are good you get used to them and then forget and enjoy the game.
