Compared to Nintendo's effort it's actually pretty conventional.
Maybe for some paddle games, on the N64.
Still looks more comfortable to hold than original one.

Dafuq is this crap? Why did they make a controller for nuclear waste mutants with 3 arms?
>>4111318

>>4111306
They're rather expensive, you can get them on ebay or from forums if you're savvy. They're inflatable, so finding a 'working' one is tough, and adult males are way too heavy for it (obviously).
>>4111152

Neither of them are my pics. I did have the opportunity to buy one but it didn't come with the tea so I wasn't interested.

Why did the Jaguar controller have a numpad on it though?

It was for overlays, like the intellivision had

I don't even remember those. Did they come with the games? My little dumb ass must've totally lost those.

N64 and GC controllers are the height of Nintendo fans defending literally anything. At least with N64 we have the benefit of hindsight, although it doesn't seem like it would take a stroke of genius to put the stick and the pad next to each other.

A lot of games would have fancy functions that would be impractical on other controls. For example, Jaguar is the only console port of Doom that lets you quickswap to any weapon like the PC version.

Pretty much anything released before the NES is going to have a weird controller. See pic related.
>>4111178
That was actually a standard design for controllers around the time it was released. Just look at the coleco/intellivision controllers. (Pic not related) The only thing that sucked about the 5200 controller is that atari thought that you needed analogue controls to play space invaders and the controllers break easily,

It doesn't look like that there are many adapters to connect the Bandai/Apple Pippin Controller to a modern machine, despite:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IARFYwr6I8Y
http://skunx7.wixsite.com/bliss-box
Strange thing is, the connectivity with the AppleJack controller is listed here:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002JRYLE8
but not on their website/store:
http://skunx7.wixsite.com/bliss-box/online-store
More info on the controller connection
http://www.journaldulapin.com/2016/05/28/apple-pippin/
The connector seems to be ADB (Apple Desktop Bus). I'm not sure if other Adapters ADB->USB are still available. The above thing looks rather expensive.
>>4120950
ADB was just Apple's serial cable, if memory serves. Just like a PC serial cable, but a different plug layout, obviously. I can't believe there aren't USB adapters. Surely someone had to plug an older Apple keyboard or mouse into an iMac at some point.
>>4120957
OK, I also found the Griffin Technology iMate: USB/ADB Adapter
But that thing seems to be rare and expensive too. It looks like ADB/USB Adapters are really sought-after. But not for the controller. Some really seem to hang onto their old pre-USB Mac keyboards for some reason.
And there seem to be some DIY projects too for cases like that.
geekhack ADB to USB keyboard converter
But I'm not sure if this project was mainly aimed towards those old keyboard or if other ADB devices like the Controller are supported too.
(I had to remove all the links since this post was considered as spam somehow)
>>4120950
Would this trackball be useful to emulate SegaSonic The Hedgehog
>>4121015
I guess Sonic would control like shit with a trackball. Something like that would be more useful for Arcade games that used a trackball like Marble Madness. But I have no clue if trackballs are supported by emulators (especially mame) or just treated like regular analog sticks and/or mice (well they are just kinda like mice after all).
>>4121023
Some builds of MAME absolutely support trackballs. I've used them before.
>>4120694
I've been considering getting it. Unfortunately v2 costs like 10 times as much as the v1, and that doesn't have the analog stick.
>>4121007
>Some really seem to hang onto their old pre-USB Mac keyboards for some reason.
>>4121023
Segasonic the hedgehog used a trackball
Its an arcade game
Its the reason why emulating it is hard

No. Stop that.
>>4118612
I had the SNES version of this, its actually really good for some of the rpgs when it comes to saving your thumbs. Wasn't too bad for Street Fighter either, but I wouldn't use it for anything else.
>>4117880
I've got one of these, its surprising comfortable. The whole controller has a rubberized texture.

it's because Microsoft bought the rights to the dreamcast controller
DS abominations are offensive to me. I know people complain about ergonomics and layout with the DualShock but it's just a beautiful cultural product to me, the pure neutral layout.
>>4119280
It's still a retarded design. How was anybody suppose to pick up on that? I remember having trouble playing Super Mario 64 the first time at a friend's house, didn't quite get the hang of the control scheme until I got myself a N64.
>>4125973
>How was anybody suppose to pick up on that?
I picked up on it when I got my N64 when I was 8. How did people not pick up on it?

This fucking delusion
The original DS is just a SNES controller with handles and analog sticks and every iteration since then is just that with minor changes every generation, don't act like Sony has anything to do with defining controller designs. The Switch Pro controller is obviously takes more inspiration from Microsoft's controllers, which have also been getting better and better with every gen.
