Most of the time, threads for obscure arcade games on this board tend to center around the late 80s and 90s. This thread is for earlier games, before 1985.

Have you ever played Senjyo from Tehkan? It's an awesome single-screen shooting game where you control a tank and defend against approaching enemies. Rotating the turret around shows off an impressive parallax effect. You can shoot down flying saucers to increase a score multiplier, and have to dodge sideways to avoid enemy shots and kamikaze fighters that charge at you. Excellent pure shooting action.

That looks amazing. I'll have to try that out later.

I've only played arcade games through MAME. Quantum was pretty enjoyable, I guess.

Here's Equites from Alpha Denshi. It's a vertical shooting game where you can freely transform between a robot and a jet fighter to attack ground and air targets. The robot has to avoid obstacles, and there are large walls that must be flown over as the jet, as well as tunnels where only the robot can be used.

Tac/Scan is a favourite. Pretty much a vector shooter where you play as a fleet of little ships that all fly and shoot together in formation. They eventually die off by getting hit so you keep replenishing them as pickups. The end of a stage goes 3d chase view as you rotate around and shoot down a few ships before warping to the next zone.

Black Widow is a godlike vector twinstick shooter where you're killing waves of insects that come onto your web, pushing eggs off it before they hatch into more enemies, and earning mad spider ca$h. Gets insane when you get up to the enemies that explode over a huge area and you can get caught in the blast. A localish retro arcade has it and I get hooked. Vector stuff just doesn't feel dated.

Marvin's Maze from SNK. A fun, simple maze game played on a two-level field. Shoot down the "Robonoids" and use the orange bridges for a narrow escape.

Mad Planets is cooooool.
it's a pain to emulate because of the spinner and stick control setup (it would probably be a pretty fine twin-stick game if it was brought home), but I've played it a bunch down at Arcade Odyssey
the sound effects are brilliant, Gottlieb games had wonderful sound

it basically boils down to speedkilling the planets before they can form properly or you end up having to slowly take them out --
and they can get pretty damn aggressive when formed, throwing moons at you and trying to ram you
brilliant fun, but I hate the control order and I have to play it cross-handed so my left hand is on the joystick and the right hand is on the spinner

I was just playing this, fucking incredible game. While definitely not as good as the real controls, I've found it works well in MAME with WASD for the stick and the mouse for the dial, with the mouse button to fire.

The awesome TX-1 from Tatsumi. Three-screen racing game with branching routes three years before Out Run. The cabinet is quite a spectacle.

It did have a US release by Atari, who I believe tried to present it as a Pole Position sequel. There was also a Japan-only sequel, TX-1 V8, which isn't emulated. I haven't even seen footage of it.

However, I have played Tatsumi's other 3-screen racing game, Buggy Boy, on the real 3-screen cabinet.

Inferno from Williams. Extremely rare, not many cabinets were made. It's an isometric twin-stick shooting game with diagonal four-way joysticks (like Q*bert). Shoot down the demons, and then capture their souls by touching the escaping shadow before it can reach the top of the screen and regenerate. The multiple floors of the maze affect your shots, there are tank enemies whose treads have to be destroyed by shooting from a lower floor. It's relatively playable on MAME if you have a twin-stick controller.

The monster at the top of the screen is the Grand Lizard, who would later be the star of a 1986 pinball game from Williams.

One of my favorites, Eyes from Techstar. I first heard of it from that game show, Starcade. It's a maze shooting game, shoot the dots/objects to collect them, and shoot the enemy eyes. They'll fire at you as soon as you cross their sight, so you have to learn to attack from the side. It's kind of like the tank stage from Tron.
>>
>>4124393
>Starcade

Oh damn I haven't heard that name in ages. I remember an episode that ended with Sinistar vividly, I wanted to run out and play that shit right there and then.

Too bad there's not that many of them.
>>
>>4135139
No, but it's not as famous as Pac-Man or other Pac-Man clones.
I played it on Coleco Vision back in the day, so it's not as obscure as some other japan-only games that never got console ports at least.

Hey, i know its not what this thread is about, butI have a question, and I dont think it warrents killing a thread for...

I have a retroPi, and my grandpa REALLY wants to play Gravitar.

but it seems to be for MAME 0.184. Does any of the retropi MAME emulators run that?

RetroPi comes with
mame4all-pi
lr-mame2000
lr-mame2003
lr-mame2010
lr-mame2014
lr-mame2016
AdvanceMAME 0.94
AdvanceMAME 1.4
AdvanceMAME 3

Sorry, ive never done anything with Mame before. Any help is appreciated.
>>
>>4135946
I will never understand why anyone doesn't just use the GUI version of MAME.
>>
>>4135946

https://github.com/retropie/retropie-setup/wiki/Arcade

As long as you have the Pi 2 or 3, Gravitar will work. You need the file from version 0.78.

>>
>>4136069

Also, the 2600 version is better.
>>
>>4136084
oh, is it? Ive never played either, whats the difference?
>>
>>4136084
>>4136093
No fucking way is the Atari 2600 version better than the original. I've never seen a single game on the system that was better than the arcade version.
>>
>>4135526
this

I'm surprised the tech wasn't used more

vector graphics have arguably aged the best of any graphics from the pre-NES era
>>
>>4100824
I have to try this game out later.

So even pre-Golden Age, i.e. the 70s, games count?
>>
>>4147634
Most 70s arcade games are ULTRA obscure nowadays since the majority of them can't be4 emulated. A lot of that stuff is worth playing if you can find it.
>>
>>4146947
fun game

What's a good fightstick for MAME? I wanted to get one for fighting games but also use it with arcade games. So if it came with some specialty thing like a trackball that would be great.

I sure think it is. You've got more control over escaping/trapping the enemies, and the color-coded extend/bonus x feature is great.
