Whats the deal with loading psx iso files on a ps3 with cfw? Does it only work with homebrew emulators or can I load the iso files into the official built in emulator like a retail disc?

You can load disc images. There are no homebrew emulators. Sony's emulator doesn't have cue file support so games with Redbook audio are a hassle.

Well no, but you can take good care of your big guy to extend the lifespan. Make sure your system placement is cool and well ventilated and LIGHTLY vacuum the vents on the rear if they become dusty.

the PS3's built in emulator is not even good, just use one of the ones recommended by emulation wiki on your pc
