I hated Dungeon Master 2. For me, that was a huge let down after DM1.

What's a good starting point?

It did everything the 1st game did but better and it had more and better everything!
Only the graphics were not so good for the time due to long production.

Depends on your taste I'd say.
If you like Planescape / story heavy games I recommend Albion (pic releated)
If you want it more casual / action oriented, I recommend Lands of Lore 2.
If you like classic Oldschool RPG I recommend the Dark Eye Trilogy. (though this game is hard as fuck!)
