I was about to replay Shining Force 1 for the first time in a while, and I was wondering what /vr/ thinks about the GBA remake.

It's… not great.
Pro: There are some nice little tweaks that make the gameplay less tedious, and the translation of the story is much closer to the original Japanese (the English translation of the Genesis version left out some majorly important fucking details that are necessary to understand wtf is going on)
Con: The graphics and sound are kind of fugly compared to the original Genesis, and the addition of new characters, interlude chapters, and card collecting are truly pointless and annoying. If you play the GBA version, you *will* detest Narsha.
Conclusion: Play the Genesis version, but get the story by reading a transcript of the GBA version or a re-translation of the original (shiningforcecentral.com is your friend here).

There were also goals it introduced, i.e. finish battle in 8 rounds, etc.

Are there some mods that fix the translation issues?

It's a pretty great remake.
They brought the original scenario writer back and expanded the story. Max now talks and most characters have backstory, as well as an affection system depending on how much you use them in battle. Some characters suffer (Domingo suddenly becomes a Pokémon), but the vast majority are improved story-wise. The expanded scenario contradicts several things from later Shining games, but it just feels like it's what the first one was always supposed to convey, probably because they have the same writer, so some details from the Genesis version will make sense now.
The gameplay feels a lot easier at first, but this is fixed with the star system, a New Game+ of sorts where each time you play the game you get a star. With each star the difficulty increases. Theoretically you can get as many stars as you want until either the game or you break down. Battles have goals that can serve as self-imposed challenges, and completing them gives you some nice rewards.
Three characters were added, a broken healer, some alien ninja, and the card guy, through whom you can use the new card system. You can collect cards from characters and enemies and then make the new character use them for some really cool strategies and effects. It starts as a broken novelty, but if you replay the game a lot it becomes the only way to survive. It's pretty fun to try out either way.
Aesthetically, it's worse than the Genesis game. Graphics have pastel colors and feel like colored pencils; the art design for most characters took a hit for the worst. Music is mostly the same, just with lower GBA quality. I think the only new track is this one, for promoted attacks: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BN_zH3AXVCU
So as a game, it's a lot better thanks to the theoretically infinite replayability it has. Aesthetically it's worse, though not really all that bad.
Also, the anon who says the card system is pointless is a casual who never replayed at higher difficulties.

DROPPED

IIRC no one's done one yet.

>the addition of new characters, interlude chapters, and card collecting are truly pointless and annoying. If you play the GBA version, you *will* detest Narsha
There is nothing annoying about them and they only improve the game.
>>4085942
It's greatly expanded but fans of the original wont really enjoy it, and the graphics are pretty ugly because it was trying to compensate for a GBA without a backlight.
>>4088938
It's more that somebody needs to mod the visuals for the GBA remake, to make it less shit.
>>4085942
They made Hans and Gong actually good.
Ken and Mae still have their respective qualities (Ken has a shit ton of HP, Mae has good DEF)
they boosted Tao and Anri
they made Earnest WAY too OP
Musashi and Hanzo now have bad ass promotions and Hanzo has spells that work. They changed where you find them though so you get them much earlier than usual.
However, they nerfed the shit out of Zylo, and Bleu and Domingo which really sucks since they were some of the coolest characters
>>4093416
Ken, Hans and Gong are still garbage in the remake.

You guys do realize that the stats you gain when levelling up are random, right? They follow a certain pattern for each character, but you can really luck out or get screwed. It's meaningless to say they "boosted" or "nerfed" any character, they didn't, it's just you having a shitty/great RNG.
>>4095854
Some characters have terrible stat gain patterns, like Ken or Adam. Some characters had those patterns nerfed compared to the original (Bleu, also Domingo, even though he still wrecks shit). Guntz is great all around. Zylo is great at first, then has horrible stat gains after promotion, then picks up again after a few levels. There's only so much you can write off as "RNG" when Max stays great no matter what and Adam is unsalvageable until very far into the NG+ territory, and even then only because he has great defenses that, again, not even RNG can hurt.

Basically the same game but the Genesis version is better in both music and art style.
The GBA version gives out more of the backstory for each character. Also Tao and Anri have different battle models when equip with the secrets outfits. Both are still cute
Gonna bump
Anyone here haveLewd versions of Tao and Anri?
>>4099050
Should have been Tao and Anri wearing either the bikini's, Maid outfits or the Bunny outfits
