I beat the first one on the Anthology collection, but I used a ton of continues and don't really remember any of it. I'd like to try a 1CC run one day, though.

The first metal slug is definitely the easiest to 1cc. If you make it your goal and play once a day you'll find yourself having a lot of fun.

After not playing metal slug x for more than a decade , i got Metal Slug X for Wii VC two weeks ago and have been playing almost daily. I can beat the first 2 levels easily but i start dying on the 3rd and subsequent levels. I really want to 1cc this game.

I can still 1cc the first 2 stages on Metal Slug 3 even though I haven't played in years, maybe the third too if I don't hesitate

It's been a long time.
I remember being able to 1cc the first three missions on 2/X, sometimes even the fourth mission. But shit went really South with the fifth and final missions.
In the fifth I can't make it to the end of the first screen with the Slug most of the time, and I keep getting rekt ok the streets while trying to preserve it. The train isn't much of a problem until soldiers hail from above.
Then there's the alien mothership. I have never been able to beat that piece of shit while keeping both the Slug and the prisoner. Forgot his name.

Tl;dr the mother ship keeps kicking my ass really hard.
Any tips?

I played Metal Slug 3 on my bros Xbone, but it just made me want to just buy it on steam and play it on my CRT Monitor desu

Try this and load up the mothership level and start practicing. It's what I did with Rootmars. If you can beat it going in with JUST your pistol then you're golden.

Right here, OP. Though it was one of the sequels that I played.

Currently 1CC'd 1, 2 (also X), 5 and working on 3. Me and an international friend recently got back into X together and we both got the 1CC. 3's Barely non-retro but I can casually stroll through missions 1-4 and most of final, though as soon as I make a mistake I keep dying and hit a game over. I just gotta find a route to brute through everything in the hangar of final mission and it all should be gravy from there, though rootmars might cause some delays.

Try not to die and also save all your bombs for the UFOs. The first stage of the mothership is pretty easy and it just comes down to memorization, but the UFOs in the second stage of him are a PITA without a good weapon or a bunch of bombs. If you save everything you can go nuts, and it makes it much easier. Also, when the SV001 comes in after a while, jump in that and head up to the collapsed building on the left. As soon as some UFOs fly out you can hit them with a bomb and it destroys all of them while focusing your main gatling attack on the mothership.

Honestly if you can't finish the game on the 4 credits the AES mode gives you, then you wouldn't have fun with the game anyway.
