Just got both of these games today and I'm liking the turn based style of the game. Any tips though for a complete beginner?

Currently playing through 1 and I heard it's possible to completely fuck yourself over if you don't know what you're doing and the time limit for the main quest is a bit worrying.

From what I remember, speech is the strongest skill in the game if you play your cards right. Combat can be avoided 90% of times, but only in the main story. Don't expect to do all side quests without getting your hands dirty. Also get yourself a bit of repair and science for some key points in the game. If I remember correctly, you need a bit of both if you want to finish the game as a pacifist.

Endurance is important, I think that's the stat that gives you AP. Unlike the later fallout games, AP can make or break your gameplay, so make sure to invest an adequate amount in that, 7 or so. Anything else is up to you. Also, bartering and wildlife aren't that important. Some of the really important skills are repair, science and lockpicking. but seriously, just pick whatever and have a good time. It's a solid game. 1 that is.

at 8 AG u get 9 action points and at 10 u get 10

also charisma is kinda useless so u can easily make it your dump stat unless youre roleplaying as a chad

the time limit is a bother, but it's fairly forgiving and can be extended

I can't recall everything so correct me on this if I'm wrong please, but I think you're gonna be fine as long as you're paying attention. Unless you spend a lot of time jerking off with the caravan jobs or something I don't see how you'd end up in a no-win scenario

OP here, thanks for the tips so far. This game is easier to get into than people claim. One thing though, how exactly do companions work?

I got Ian from Shady Sands and for some reason he no longer fights in combat but just runs away. I thought he was out of ammo so I went to barter with him but he had like 17 bullets on him. Is there something I did my mistake or is there something I'm missing?

The only tips I give is

If you want to fight, invest in AG.
Don't give burst weapons to your companions. They have the tendency to shoot you in the back, and burst weapons have both a wide spread and crit like a motherfucker.

If he runs away it means he's injured. Just rest or give him some stimpacks before fighting. Ian is bro tier and will help you throughout the game tremendously don't let him die. If he dies reload, trust me he was there for me even in the final battle. Give him an smg when you get one + bullets + some good armor and you're set

Speech is one of the best skills in the game, but Charisma is a dump stat. It does pretty much nothing in FO1. In FO2, it determines the amount of companions you're allowed to have. You get more dialogue options by pumping Intelligence, not Charisma. A CH of 1 or 2 is perfectly okay; put in more if you'd like your character to be more flavorful and unlock some ultimately unsubstantial interactions, but aside from that, CH isn't the gateway to be a diplomat.

Sneak is good, however. You can use it to position yourself before a fight and to have an easier time escaping from encounters. Non-confrontational works, though to play Fallout as a full pacifist you have to jump through hoops and it's not intuitive. However, being mostly non-violent works.

Agility is the most important combat stat, but remember: Buffout and Psycho are drugs that can bolster it for whenever you need, and there's copious amounts of those drugs in both games. Fighting a random pack of scorpions is easy even if your AG is 4; if you're storming a mutant base or the Enclave, you will probably want to take some drugs for max AG anyway. So yeah, AG is important, but so are Intelligence and Luck, which are not as easy to bolster artificially.

Strength and Endurance are dump stats. Companions and FO2's car give you near infinite carrying capacity. Endurance is not necessary in a game where end-game enemies can one-shot you regardless of HP; your mitigation isn't HP, but avoiding taking damage at all. Abuse corners, long ranges and even crowd control (Rocket Launcher, Super Sledge) to peel off enemies.

FO1 does not allow companions to use armor. And giving Ian an SMG makes him very effective, and also very dangerous. Most of my deaths on the game were because he accidentally shot me in the back.

CH is not at all relevant to becoming a porn star. After you gain some reputation in New Reno (i.e. defeat the final boxing boss or become a mafia member), getting into a movie is just a question of having good physical stats and some sex-related perks; if you visit enough whorehouses to become a Sexpert, and, perhaps, take some Buffouts if you're weak, you are pretty much granted to score this title.

The most you can get out of a decent CH score is being a female, then you get to score some - fairly irrelevant in the long run - discounts here and there. You can fuck Metzger for a cheaper Vic release, for one thing.

they are quite hard to use in the beginning of the game because of scarcity though, but all the weapon types are pretty viable and small guns are plentiful. the perk where you can pick a 4th tag skill can be useful to get your energy weapons higher once they become more available

Small guns is a decent class of weapons to pick for your first go, as you get a lot of options, and you can get through the game fine with them. They're found everywhere. Combat Shotgun is one of the best.

I thought the time limit was fun.

Tips: Enjoy the game, it is good. Don't bother with Fallout 2. (Well you can play it if you want but it's just more of the same only not written as well.)
