Also, I end up having like a dozen different MAME installs out of raw laziness/driver changes for the worse in terms of speed or whatever else, though.
If it's not a timing issue or something really major (eg, mis-emulated protection fucking up AI/enemy patterns, game I want to play finally works), I don't really care about updating either.

Fightcade isn't the emulator itself, it's a thing built on top of an emulator. That being said fightcade is amazing as a way to play games against people. Its room system, challenge system and replays are all very nice. GGPO RIP

One of the best and most important emulators ever. That said I've no interest in using it for anything outside of arcade machines.

It's also even more impressive what has been achieved considering it's impossible for MAMEdev to go five minutes without having a public gay slapfight with each other.

The biggest problem MAME has is the devs. They've had dumps of stuff for years and still haven't added them in to the working list because "Dunno, X was supposed to do it." Or the focus on getting every last $2 primitive electronic baseball game working and emulated, while making absolutely no progress on getting Tokyo Wars fully functional, or SF Rush:The Rock running, or the model 2 games, or the model 3 games, or the NAOMI games...

I would honestly like to see all the fucking electronic/mechanical games get pulled out of MAME and shoved into MESS, and get MESS seperated out from MAME again. Just because a handful of people might be nostalgic for some barcade machine they played in college doesn't mean everyone else should have to download gigabytes of slot machine games as part of a fullset.

It has been almost a decade since I gave a shit, but the last time they rewrote Neogeo sound to be more accurate, it ended up with screwed up channel volume balance and some broken sound effects, some of which is still not fixed (the sfx when you pick up a power-down in Garou MOTW survival mode is definitely bonkers).

Meanwhile, Darius Gaiden still runs at the wrong resolution and missing all the impressive visual effects, and they keep bitching and bitching about not being able to work on the Saturn driver due to the CD Block BIOS not being shared, despite the fact that the STV doesn't even use a cd drive.

OP's pic is a Buddha's Hand Citron, Citrus medica var. sarcodactylis. It's a citrus fruit that's basically all skin, with little to no pulp. It's famous for it's tentacle-like shape, which can sometimes vaguely resemble fingers closed in prayer. It's used in various religious and cultural ceremonies and the oils are used to provide scents for some products. There are actually lots of citrus varieties that are grown for reasons other than their fruits. NOW YOU KNOW.

Anyway MAME is good but it lags pretty far behind most other popular emulators in terms of ux.

If you're gonna use MAME, you pick a version and find roms for it. Preferably you want a "reference set" like 0.139 which has romsets out there.
It's an archival program with gameplay as a secondary concern, get FBAlpha if you want a proper emu. Honestly, I can only deal with libretro cores of MAME, I hate using the thing.

I kept trying to play different ROMs on it but barely any of them work, I guess I need to find the right versions for the right ROMs and fiddle with settings and do other shit that I'm too lazy to figure out how to do. Remapping keys is also weird.

A lazy fuck like me is used to emulators where you just select the ROM from a folder and you're good to go. MAME seems like a pain in the ass compared to other emulators.

Maybe I'll bother with it one day, but I've got enough games I still haven't played that I don't need to worry about it yet.

when you download roms they show you what version of mame they are for on the website it will say MAME 0.149b roms or whatever. If you match the roms with the emulator it should work. You also need to have the parent rom too if yooure trying to play some other revision

Back when I was younger I tried to set up a mame cab. I still have the bigass custom four player panel and it still works, so that's a plus. Mame is alright for what it is.

Personally though, I'd love to see a sister project that took what mame was doing but aimed for accurate emulation. Sure, it would always be 20 years behind the curve of what would run, but it would be better from a preservation standpoint and it's not as if mame would suddenly stop existing.

It's ironic that complaints here are generally a) MAH ROMZ NOT WORK and b) MAME is not accurate enough.
MAME is the most autistic enterprise around, the reason ROMs magically stop working is stuff like they find the chip actually had a different stickered name on it so the files MUST be rename or that there were PROMs that could be dumped that most emulators would ignore and just fake.

They won't even bother supporting 3D acceleration because its impossible to achieve pixel accuracy that way. Most of the stuff that doesn't work yet is because no one's bothered to work on it because they are too busy shouting at each other as to who is the truest elitist autist.
It's the antithesis of /VR/'s Retropi NES games on a 1080p 16:9 LCD screen approach.
