What is /vr/ opinion on these two games? Still good to play?

All Wizardry games are worth playing except for 4.

Where do I start the series? Is there different versions of the first?

NES/SNES version differs from the original on some maps and the use of DUMAPIC.
There's also some PS1 collections of all the older games with automap of that's your thing.

SNES version hits all the good spots for me.

What? Too hardcore for you?

I can't stand 7. They tried to turn Wizardry 6 into an open world game and it didn't work. The game is huge but it just drags on forever with no real challenge and you get annoying NPCs extorting you.
The original version of 6 suffers from bad controls, monotonous graphics and sound, you are best off playing the SFC or Saturn version.
