What's your favorite D pad? Mine is the Sega Genesis 3 button controller's D pad.
>>

Saturn model 2/3d and the XBox 1 are my current favorites.
>>
>>4056151
Favorite retro pad: One of the Saturn models, can't recall which
Favorite non-retro pad: Xbox S
>>
>>4056151
Shit taste, OP. That's the worst one. Overly large and inflexible.

Sony really started nailing it for me. I love the psp 1000, psp go, DS4, and psvita dpads.

The closest to retro for me is probably the GBA SP dpad. I wish there were more tactile dpads these days

The best ones to use are the later revision MK-1650s that came with the Genesis 2. That one has the same D-Pad mechanism as the 6-button pad and Saturn controller.
>>
Love: Genesis 6 button .
Hate: Genesis 3 button .

Those knockoff controllers with the same mechanism as the Genesis D-Pad but the pad itself is slightly higher.
Like pic related (random picture from Google for just the D-pad and not the controller).

Else, the PlayStation D-pad. For non-retro also.
>>
>>4056384
Also, NGPC "d-pad", but I know this doesn't really count here.
>>
Sega Saturn, the japanese gray joystick, then genesis 6 buttons.

Unironically it's the Dreamcast one. It's tiny yet accurate. I can pull off moves on it easier than any other controller I've ever used.

The controller that was so perfect that nearly every major console's controller since is some variation of it.
>>
>>4057076
Literally not another controller was ever made that had hold punches for buttons.

Truly the best controller of all time
>>
>>4057076
Six face buttons is better, especially for games like Capcom fighters.
>>
>>4058168
yeah, this is why I like the n64 gamepad better. 6 face buttons, best dpad ever and comfy as fuck. Those horns were a godsend. I'm yet to use a gamepad better than the n64.

You guys can diss the analog all you want, I don't care. They were bad yes, but the trigger button was an innovation at least.

Anyway, I use my n64 gamepad mostly for my 8-16 bit and arcade gaming I sometimes even forget about the analog.

Vita

correct answer.

The SNES pad was also amazing

3DS circle pad but I guess it doesn't count because it's not *just* a d-pad.

Are we only talking first party? If so, I'm probably just blinded by nostalgia, but this is honestly my favorite FEELING dpad. Yes, the SNES dpad has a softer return when you let off it, more accurate diagonals, and is slightly bigger for non-manchild hands; but the soft, low travel snap of pressing this dpad is just fantastic to me.

As far as favorite dpad by performance, probably the sega 6 button. So good for fighting games and platformers.
>>
Another point to Saturn model 2
>>
>>4057062
That looks like a monstrosity.

Saturn D-pad.
It's pretty damn good. Been playing a big 'ol stack of Saturn games for the last week or two now that I have a working Saturn again and I'm continually reminded of why I love the d-pad. Only real issue with the controller is the mildly shitty L/R triggers.
the other D-pad I really like is the Vita's (very nice feeling, easy diagonals), I'm still fucking mad the PS4 pad doesn't use it

the worst ones I've used are the 360 (I've gotten some ludicrous inputs playing fighting games with it), the PS2 (diagonals don't fucking happen), and the PSP-1000 (diagonals absolutely never happen)

>>4057062
Really? I've got a DC pad I bought new in box in 2012 and I can't stand the d-pad on that thing. Can barely attempt to play KOF with the thing, and it's just this small, rock-hard thing that's mildly awkwardly placed.
only thing I like about the DC controller is that it looks cool as fuck
>>
>>4056151
/vr/? the mechanical stick on the Neo Geo Pocket Color/the NG CD controller

current and modern? the Vita's d-pad is fantastic
>>
>>4057062
For whatever reason this is actually my favourite controller in general so I naturally love the d-pad on it. that said SNES and>>4056212 are just perfect.
