Yeah, if i remember right you can trade pokemon from gbc to gba and from gba to ds. But i dont think theres a way to trade from ds to 3ds.
Shouldnt be too hard to find a 1st party link cable, if you cant though, just pick up a 3rd party one. They work just as well, be careful though cause some 3rd party cables are flimsy as shit

Yes. There was even an adaptor to connect the GBA cable to an original Gameboy.

You cannot link 3rd gen with 2nd or 1st gen games.
I have a cable that normally works as a GBC cable, but has a small adapter at the end that makes it work with GBA games. Idk what it's called though.

You remember wrong, it is impossible to rescue retro pokemon from their 1st and 2nd gen cartridge prisons unless you're playing the digital re-releases.
