The cutoff point is 2000 so M&M7 released in 1999 is considered retro but 8 released in 2000 is not.
7 is very similar to 6 and 8 is still close. 3-5 are fairly different and 1 and 2 even moreso.

8 breaks traditions a little with how the party is formed and the general theme of the available PCs (monsters, traditional "bad guys")

if you're only going to buy one and you've already played 6 you just gotta think back to whether you liked 6

if you appreciated being married to your party comp and having to think and play around whatever weaknesses it had or mistakes you'd made go for 7

if on the other hand you found yourself wishing you didn't have so many guys relying on melee in this dungeon or wanting less flimsy dudes for that one maybe consider 8
