I mean this in the best possible way, but 99% of video game art, especially retro video game art is stolen copies, traces, references from works by fine artists and illustrators. If you like the look of a piece of game art, try and find out the original piece they stole it from, and enjoy that instead. Don't give these art thieves credit for something they didn't do.

Welcome to 9/10 90s games.

It really gets my goat that we've reached a point where all of this concept art can be done justice in 3D, but the era has passed and most "anime" art styles these days tend to be bland as fuck.

Huh, Grancrest's designs are looking better than I expected.

I can think of better recent art styles though.

I think there's enough decent art styles in anime and manga right now, even if there's a sea of awful ones, I'm talking more video game-wise.

hosoi is great of course. not every design is animation-friendly so most of the times they get dumbed down for production reasons (which i can actually understand), but hosoi is good at making them, and her husband is good at making them work.

and yeah sorry, i read "anime" as anime. kishida mel stuff is basically good to really good too.

It's always been this way. The majority of stuff looks mediocre and derivative and is mostly forgotten. Looking back we tend to remember the things that stand out as either great or awful.
>>

Oh, I know, didn't mean to sound like I was acting like every random game/anime/whatever was some bastion of enlightened taste.

I'm just saying that I preferred the highs of that era to the highs we have at the moment, particularly for JRPGs.

No, it really doesn't.

This, we just remember the good stuff. The thing though is generally was just more interesting in general. Stuff like lupin iii, classic ghibli, akira, and cowboy bebop in comparion to what, kill la kill, attack on titan, and all the shonen shit like naruto and one piece? Look at the current seasonal shit, its literally shitty cgi zoo animals girls made on a shoe string budget. Anime is just shit now a days.

Jrpgs were better. Fifth gen jrpgs are often made fun of for how overly complicated their ultimately stupid plots are but I would take that over never ending fan service any day.

entirely depends on what you've seen so far and your taste. shouwa genroku rakugo shinjuu was stellar but not everyone has a taste for the subject matter of rakugo and shouwa era japan, for an instance.

for stuff that i greatly enjoyed over the last few years and which might cater to enlightened vets of the great retro sega vs nintendo wars, mature anime for mature people so to say, i could name tatami galaxy, ping pong, uchouten kazoku, aku no hana, shinsekai yori, mawaru penguindrum, sakamichi no apollon, chihayafuru. the second season of mushishi killed me. i'm not above popular and decidedly modern stuff though. shirobako was great, hyouka, fate/zero, euphonium. sometimes stuff is popular for good reason. even 3d cgi stuff has started becoming pretty good, this season's seikaisuru kado and last year's (?) sidonia is/was shockingly good.

i get why it's hard to get back in though, there's just so much and i'm struggling to keep up just with the latest news and developments. but i think we can safely say we've left the disagreeable moe era behind us.

Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinju, ACCA: 13-ku Kanatsu-ka, 91 Days, Active Raid, Concrete Revolutio, Hai to Gensou no Grimgar, Rokka no Yuusha, Death Parade, Flip Flappers, Girlish Number, Occultic;Nine, Mob Psycho 100, Juntetsu no Maria, Garo: Honoo no Kokuin, Shingeki no Bahamut...

In general over a longer period of time, The Tatami Galaxy, Ping Pong The Animation, Juuni Kokuki, Mushishi, Mononoke Gankutsuou, Seirei no Moribito, Natsume Yuujinchou, Tsuritama, Hyouge Mono, Fafner Dead Aggressor, Shin Mazinger, Tower of Druaga, Zipang, Cromartie High, Zegapain, Baccano, Dai Guard...

There's way too much for me to even list, man. If I kept recommending shows I could be here all day. Just pick something that looks interesting and go for it. Watch something by Yuasa Masaaki at the very least.

Even then it's mostly covers for shit if you look at the site he gave and that's par for the course with a lot of commercial illustration. It's kinda shitty and lame, but when it's just some dude trying to pay his rent and only getting maybe a couple hundred bucks for the job, cutting corners is understandable.

When most people talk about liking video game art, they mean concept work and character designs.

Thanks guys. I don't want to hate modern anime, it just genuinely seems so much worse then classic stuff. I love stuff like lupin iii and cowboy bebop for their great action and comedy. They had great casts and were just fun to watch. Even then it just seems like nothing in the market is really about a fun adventure. My favorite anime ever is future boy conan, it makes me sad that I can't think of anything modern remotely similar to it. Its just a fun, light hearted adventure with kids and I love it.

Anyways I love the cover of meta max returns so have that.

I think it's great, but it's a very specific kind of game. Mostly just story, walking around and talking to people. The only real gameplay is doing card battles, but the card game is decently fun.

I say this as someone who typically likes challenging action based games with as little story as possible and usually find video game storytelling very disappointing. I thought it was a very charming and surprisingly moving little game. It's short, but you can go around post game and play a lot of cards and collect stuff.

So if that sounds good, I'd recommend it. I've replayed it a couple of times.
>>
>>4051645
The thing about looking back on an era is that you get to cherry pick the best parts, whereas when you look at stuff that's currently airing, and there's a LOT of stuff that airs each season, it seems like endless trash where the most popular ones are garbage. The amount of trash each decade remains roughly stable, there's just more or less anime being made as a whole.

It's best to not waste time making assumptions and just look until you find something you like. Maybe you won't find EXACTLY what you're looking for, but you'll find plenty of good things along the way.
>>
>>4051651
The trash to good ratio has increased EXPONENTIALLY though, only a dozen series aired back in the day but now you have 50 series in a single cour.
>>
>>4051645
>I love stuff like lupin iii and cowboy bebop for their great action and comedy

I think Cowboy Bebop may be one of those series you shouldn't hold everything else to. I used to be huge into anime in the 80's and 90's. Cowboy Bebop was one of the last series I ever watched. Everything after it felt bland and poorly made. I never made it through another whole series and it's been years now since I watched anything. I was probably burning out on anime in general anyways, but I remember that show being a real cut above.
>>
>>4051647
Thanks. I'm fine with a bigger story focus every once in awhile. The premise always seemed really cool but I never really looked into it. As I've got older I've come to appreciate kids as the protagonists. Something about kids is just pure and innocent, I'm sick of teenage angst and adult drama.
>>
>>4051571

I love the SoM cover art, but it's jarring as fuck to have this extremely detailed and well painted tree, with three "5 seconds in MS paint" tier photoshopped-in looking undetailed anime characters.
>>
>>4051663
Do you have the original? I've seen it posted before.
>>
>>4051645
cool man, sorry if i came across a bit harsh

>I love stuff like lupin iii
you should give the recent iterations a try. maybe skip the mine fujiko one, it's a bit divisive (i think it's interesting), but the two koike movies jigen daisuke no bohyou and chikemuri no ishikawa goemon are fucking rad and the tv show, l'aventura italiana, is great too.

>and cowboy bebop
admittedly there hasn't been a whole lot of that caliber, watanabe is a fairly singular talent in that regard. i'm probably obliged to name space dandy, but it's just not very good at all. huge, daring adventure stories... michiko to hatchin definitely, it's watanabe-inspired in more ways than one, with him contributing as the soundtrack producer. shingeki no bahamut should be good. FMA brotherhood qualifies too, 64 episodes and so fucking good. steins;gate maybe, why not. there's stuff futher out on the fringes like book of bantorra, zegapain, or argevollen that have some comparable qualities.

>>4051654
i think there's more middle of the pack, 5-6/10 shows these days, definitely way more than outright trash. the meatiest part of the productio today ends up in the 5-7/10 range for me, which is fine.
>>
>>4051660
>Cowboy Bebop was one of the last series I ever watched. Everything after it felt bland and poorly made. I never made it through another whole series
but you've watched samurai champloo, right? that one and michiko to hatchin are closest to cowboy bebop for obvious reasons, and samurai champloo is right up there with cowboy bebop while michiko to hatchin makes the most out of what little it has to come as close as possible.

Literally aside from a couple of movies I haven't seen any other anime since Bebop. Not saying it's all bad or anything, just that's what happened with me. I really have no interest in it anymore.
>>
>>4051673
Samurai Champloo is terrible and is a textbook case of all style, no substance.

You weren't harsh at all. I genuinely thank you for the suggestions.

All I meant was I just wish there was more then slice of life stuff. There used to be so many genuinely great action adventure shows. Also I have only watched a bit of it but the newer blue jacket lupin is excellent.

Anyways have some more BoFIV guys, I can overstate how much I love Yoshikawa's art and designs.

It's such a massive pain in the ass how much Japanese artists insist on using Twitter when it's awful for both finding and viewing artwork.

Some artist will post an amazingly drawn picture and only upload it in 500x500, and the only way you'll ever get their work in a higher quality was to buy their fucking doujin at some con in Japan that ran for two days.

This anon is right. It's too hard to find good shows today than it was at any point before. Just like good games. I used to scan seasons for each single release, about two and a half years ago i had to give up. One-two half-decent shows per season are not worth the effort. Too much shit, and producers are finding out too...

It's that the volume has increased so much due to variety. So if you have specific tastes you have a lot more to look through. But there's also just plain more stuff. I think it's much better, but I like discovering things for myself.

This is in relation to games, not anime.

Where do you get your VG art from /vr/?

Straight from mother-google?
Do you have a website for HQ rips?
Have you ever scanned in any art yourself?

I'm looking for a HQ box-art resource with scans of PAL/JPN covers since they seem to be hard to find.

I've used google for specific finds, but I wonder if there's a better search engine for foreign art archive searching. Digging through the Internet using english from an english regional IP address is probably making it harder to find non-english box-art archival projects

They're far away, not much detail you can put into them, and to render them too realistically would be jarring compared to their actual, cutesy anime character designs. Its kind of a brilliant piece. Makes your eyes draw to them quickly too since they're simple compared to the rest of the painting.
