Sonic 1 Master System is the underrated gem of the classic Sonic games. It actually presents a challenge since you can't just pick your rings back up when you get hit, and the platforming is actually well done.

Too bad Sega only wants the public to remember the Game Gear version.

Marble 3 sucks. Labyrinth 3 really sucks. Scrap Brain 3 really, really sucks.
Rest of the game is just decent.

S2's brilliant, up to and including Mystic Cave.
Quality tanks after that. Metropolis 3 really fucking sucks (supposedly, it's from a scrapped level and it got repainted as another Metropolis act, which might explain why it sucks so much). Sky Chase is pure filler and IIRC you can just park the Tornado in the top right corner or something and ignore everything. I hate Wing Fortress, mostly after getting launched straight into the abyss a couple times.
Final boss is retarded hard when locked on with S&K, not too bad otherwise.

CD's got some really jank stage design.
I probably enjoyed Quartz Quadrant the most, and that's a bit sad since it's a fairly straight shot to the end. Wacky Workbench has some ridiculously annoying platforming. Stardust Speedway's stage design is a complete mess.
I actually like Metallic Madness quite a bit, it's pretty cool other than the platforming bit at the start of act 3. I have no idea how to hit the final boss without getting hit myself. JP soundtrack is brilliant. US one is okay.

S3's pretty solid the whole way.
Marble Garden has issues (off-screen spike balls, obnoxious amount of crushers, walls that need the blue tops to pass through, act 2 boss), but that's probably the worst of it.
Oh, and Carnival Night 2 is too fucking long.

S&K is extremely solid the whole way, with the only particular issues being the absolute end of Lava Reef (where you can die by going the way you're supposed to before the camera unlocks) and Sandopolis 2 being a bit annoying (as a stage, I'm not even talking about the ghosts).
The S&K half is better than the S3 half.

Chaotix is gorgeous, sounds brilliant, and has awful stage design.
I can't stand the later acts of Amazing Arena one bit. Botanic Base and Speed Slider have the best stage design in the game, and it's still just okayish at best.
It's visibly unfinished overall.

The trilogy were my main childhood games.
I got a genesis 3 for christmas when I was ~4 years old and it came with Sonic Classics. One of my oldest memories is of me playing Oil Ocean Zone in our game room while my sister was playing house in her new Barbie-themed tent.

I didn't like the 1st game. It didn't have the spin dash, Tails, and it was slower so I just considered it the inferior game. (Still do, because 3 acts per zone is too many and I prefer the level design of the later games.)
I didn't even finish the first game until I was about 12. I kept losing at Labyrinth Zone, or would get bored or didn't have much time to play.

I know the second game by heart. I remember getting all of the chaos emeralds even with the Tails' AI screwing me over.

One time my older brother was playing and he made it to the final fight. That was a huge fucking deal at the time. But he started spazzing out, saying that he was losing because my sister and I were watching him play. So we got a ball of yarn and strung it to the outside of the room and told him to yank on it when he beat it so we could see the ending. We waited for a long time but he never beat it.

I used to borrow S3&k from a friend. I 100% every save file before returning it to him, I was in love with that game. I still play it every year. I also got to play Spinball and 3D Blast at his house, but don't have anything to say about them.

While I'm at it, I got the Sonic OVA tape for my ~6th birthday. I was so excited that I needed to watch it RIGHT NOW. So I did, and it was amazing. (It was just a family party. I wasn't ignoring friends or anything.) But during that time, the adults started serving cake and when the movie ended it was all gone. Probably my most emotionally complicated birthday, I was so happy with my gift but cried because I didn't get any cake.

...So there, OP. It's late and that's my big autistic Sonic the Hedgehog memories write-up. I hope you're happy.

And man, the Sonic OVA really is fucking brilliant.
It's weird in all the right ways and is a brilliant portrayal of Sonic. Super light on details, and Sara was absolutely utterly redundant and very little would change if she wasn't present, but who fucking cares, it's got two really iconic fights, solid animation, and a standout soundtrack. Metal Sonic was the coolest fucking thing, and I'd wished he was in the games (didn't know about Sonic CD or Sonic the Fighters at the time).
the voice acting in the dub is awful but I still like it for whatever reason

Sonic 2 is and always was my favorite. Adding the spin dash added so much more speed and momentum to the game. The faster levels are so fun.

Also last year I made the upgrade to RGB SCART, and was amazed by how good it looks. Everything looked so sharp and the colors really popped.

The only bad parts of the game are the casino levels and the second stage in chemical plant zone.

I can't finish sonic 3 half the time. Marble garden and carnival night suck, and because the levels are so much longer it's harder to push past them
&knuckles is what I usually play if I want to finish something in one sitting. All the levels are good at the very least, it has a better end and death egg is my all time favorite sonic level.

I have to agree with you on Carnival Night and Marble. They both had mechanics frustrating to learn and use properly

& Knuckles isn't exempt from being frustrating either. Try Sandopolis Act 2 as Knuckles (Or even SONIC for that matter). I don't mind the ghosts but pretty much everything else makes me want to use level select instead.

Tails' palette and frame definitions remain in the final game and Wechidna has his move-set in the prototype, it's him any way you look at it. No one said there was. Tails was meant to be in Sonic Crackers, but when the project became Knuckles Chaotix, it's very clear that they no longer intended for Sonic and Tails to be in the game, so Sonic was replaced with Mighty and Tails was mostly removed.

Why are Sonic bonus stages so bullshit?
Sonic team gives you like one or two simple stages then ramp them up like crazy.

Will admit I had to savescum most of Sonic 2's ones. Especially the last one, which you have to be virtually perfect on, or else you'll fail half way in and have to do it all again even with save scumming.

Sonic 2's is harder if you have Tails with you ontop. He's so fucking slow to react to everything he's almost guaranteed to fuck you over, especially if he's ended up infront of you. You jump, he jumps. Goddamn little furry motherfucker, get back into your place in line you fuck.

Then you got Sonic 1's "hey lets just throw you straight into a bunch of bullshit with mad physics clusterfuck", and Sonic 3's infuriating blue spheres where if you fuck up even once, it's like "fuck you. Do it all over shithead".

And Sonic CD? That's one of the worst ones of all.

Sonic steers like a fucking tank and you got to hit those flying fucks dead on and they fly around with little rhyme or reason and you get stuck in geometry and shit.

All absolutely infuriating.

Sonic 1 special stages aren't that hard and Sonic 3 is babby mode. I'll give you that Sonic 2 is bullshit but that's mainly due to them thinking fake 3D was actually a good idea when you can't fucking see shit unless the path is completely straight.

You want real bullshit, Sonic Advance has the worst fucking special stages I've ever seen. You're basically screwed if you don't nail that stupid trick in the circle of rings at the end.
