Because while Japs try to actually create good competitive games, western devs just cobble together whatever shit they find it's cool and slap a gimmick to try and differentiate their shit game from other games.

While we have games for kids, western fighting games seem developed BY kids that just shove on the game everything they like. That's why Mortal Kombat went from a bad game aping bad martial arts movies to an abomination that embodies everything wrong with american games and comics in the 90's. It's like a Rob Liefeld fever dream.

Also, is the "time travel tournament" the most common trope on western fighting games? Besides gore, of course.

Killer Instinct is the only western fighting game I consider got most things right, mainly because it takes a lot of notes from Street Fighter II.
Mortal Kombar games were nice back in the day, loved the fatalities, but things like the block button or the run button in MK3 are just bad ideas in 2D fighting games.

agreed, killer instinct is really the only retro fighter made in the west worth playing in my opinion. mortal kombat is ok for some a bit of fun i guess but the controls are just fucking awful.

Mortal Kombat, Eternal Champions and Killer Instinct are all mediocre, don't kid yourselves people.

They're on the same level as 3rd Tier japanese fighting games from the same era (things like Tuff E Nuff).
