that was literally it

he went from being obsessed with creating games, to simply obsessed just playing them

online gaming ruined him

but with it, all the creativity was thrown out the window at Id
>>
>>4042616
im actually friends with him. i won't divulge details, but most of us know them anyway, but basically he was hot headed, let his ego get the best of him, landed hard on his face, took a while pulling himself together and now he's just satisfied to entertain people with whatever idea interests him at the moment.

whoever he was in the 90s, i dont think he's that guy anymore. I haven't met many other people who've been so happy, humble and just glad to have been part of something classic.

john mightve been a hot mess for a while, but hes pretty cool now.

I can't wait to see what he comes up with for his new FPS.

People doubt him because of Daikatana but here's the difference: for Daikatana he wanted to create something elaborate and new, and obviously it fell flat on its face.

This time around he just wants to make a classic style shooter. He posted those new Doom maps he made and said that his new game would be of a similar design philosophy.

Romero KNOWS how to make a classic style shooter, and he's got Adrian Carmack doing the art style. This could be the best FPS we've had in a very long time, since 97's Shadow Warrior/Blood. Can't wait to see it. Only problem is he's relying on kickstarter (which in fairness is a pretty big negative seeing as KS projects are usually shite). We'll see if he pulls it off; really hope he does. They tried starting the KS funding but it didn't meet its target, so he said that he'll show a demo first that will hopefully get more money.
>>
>>4042698
I wonder how Daikatana would have turned out if he would have just stuck with the Quake 1 engine instead.

And you'd think 3D realms would learn that jumping from engine to engine is not a good thing.
>>
>>4042616
he sucked it down himself
>>
>>4042680
Do you think people would do that? Just go on the Internet and lie?
>>
Daikatana, after that he pretty much went on to do nothing special or memorable, working on some 2D spess game no one cares about and that one cartoon network game for the GBA, which is quite a damn shame. I'm kinda hoping his new FPS ends up being pretty cool, but then again, it will probably end up being Daikatana 2.0 for all we know.

I saw John Romero at a grocery store in Los Angeles a couple years back. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything.

He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?”

I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in his hands without paying.

The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.

When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

Somebody thought it was a good idea to put a 20-something who had only developed shareware games with a group of friends at near zero risk in charge of a company that literally had to see multi-million dollar profits just to break even.

Forget the quality of any games that followed. 90% of the blame falls on the publishers who trusted this kid to get results based on his previous success with a then dead distribution model.

You say that as if shareware wasn't the defacto fucking way to sell games back then. You'd be more idiotic to hire someone who didn't even make not even a shareware title but many and perhaps the most successful one in the history of gaming from both a financial and gaming standpoint that did much to progress gaming as whole.

He layed down the key principles on making a good map though.

Provide landmarks
If you can see part of a level you should be able to get there
Provide unique details to the environment so that 2 rooms do not look same even if they use same textures
If same shit can be done in inferior engine (Wolf for Doom, Doom for Quake, etc.) Redo your shit completely.

Those principles may seem like common sense now, but look back at most 90's shooters and you will see that any shooter that did not adhere to them was inferior in level design department and got quickly forgotten.
>>
>>4042626
Wasn't he a level designer, not a coder?
>>
>>4046641
No. He had multiple hats. He was programmer and level designer and on other games he's worked on audio, producer, design, consultant.
For Doom in the credits he's credited with design, level design, tools programming, and programming.
He knows how to code because that's how he got his job at softdisk.

He's also very likely to be the one playing in some of the the Doom Demos since he was a good player and a few are played by someone who was much more advanced player than everyone else with mouse movement (which was rarer at the time)

Romero was an idiot but Carmack isn't much better. There's a reason that Gabe Newell's has $4.1 billion while Carmack only has $40 million.

Id as a whole completely wasted their potential. They pioneered and popularized so many things, if they had played their cards right they could have been a leading giant on the gaming industry, alongside the likes of Valve and Blizzard. But now they're Bethesda's bitch.

The whole point is that Carmack and Romero were a perfect storm that got together in the right place at the right time. >quake 3 is definitely better designed than quake 1 or doom ever was
From a a technical perspective or a gameplay perspective? Because from gameplay perspective, no it's not. Both Q1 and Doom are better game choices for having single player which is a gigantic boon in Q3 which bot only play. Doom's multiplayer is balanced like ass though. Quake 1 has the best balance of all of them for single and multiplayer, as well as better movement. Q3's best thing is better built in level design though. Most built in maps for Q1DM are shit, there's only really two actual good ones the others are mediocre to very bad. Though you can always download better maps.

Technical wise, well yeah.

Nope, Spanish. John Romero is a beaner, sorry you had to find out this way.

Also, Harrison Ford is a Jew.

Fuck off.

All his maps that weren't 90% done by Tom Hall are complete shit. Sandy Peterson ruined Doom II. American's maps are fun as fuck and make you think you're in for a great game and then comes the avalanche of Sandy Peterson suckage.

Fuck you and fuck Sandy Peterson.

>tfw i voted for trump but didn't unfollow him on twitter

>>4046256

Romero was always a bit liberal. I remember on him ragging on Bush on his forums back in the mid 00s. Trump's anti-illegal immigrant rhetoric probably pushed him over the edge.

And here's a fun fact: Romero and his wife are in favor of gun control, despite the man being behind several bloody games where firearms were the way you killed enemies.

>>4048592

This is true. Romero at his prime was very much a product of the early to mid 90s XTREME movement. Take him out of that time period and and he loses a lot of his luster and edge.

Current Romero is a middle-aged guy trying (and failing) to be the edgy 20-something he was back in the early 90s that loved all the over-the-top stuff that was made back then, even though the 2010s are about "deep stories", "sending a message", "emotive characters and plots", and "cinematic experiences", not "running around in heavy metal-inspired gorefests really fast, blowing up monsters that look like they came from a high schooler's notebook with ridiculous weapons". This makes him seem like an anachronism.
>>
>>4046248
Romero did most of Knee-Deep in the Dead which is the best part of Doom 1.

It's in Masters of Doom. Carmack called American into a room and told him they were letting him go. When American asked why, Carmack straight up told him it was because nobody liked him.

>He also mentions that his inspiration for the macabre tone of Alice comes from his disturbing, dysfunctional childhood. For instance, on McGee's 13th birthday, his father, whom he had just met for the first time, was "stinking drunk" and assaulted the young McGee by attempting to gouge his eyes out with the intent of either killing or molesting him. McGee escaped this event by suggesting they "take both of their cars" to a bar and get drunk. Luckily, the father agreed. Shortly afterwards his father was involved in a car accident. "They got no more than 100 feet away when American's dad crashed into a telephone pole."

I don't think you read or at the very least you didn't comprehend the rest of that post. Shareware is a minimal risk model, was the crux of the fucking affair. Romero had never been under pressure to secure a given number of sales to avert a net loss.

oh, i do want to leave one funny id software irc story, since i am probably the only person here who used to irc with id software (SENPAI!!)

one time john romero made me cry laughing because he said he kept waffles (a mod on #doom) in a bottle beside his bed and only opened it to jizz on his head every now and then

these were the people who made the great vidya of yesteryear, now we have InclusiDevs
>>
>>4047228
>There's a reason that Gabe Newell's has $4.1 billion while Carmack only has $40 million.

probably the fact that gabe's microsoft stock options were worth more than $40 million when he left, and then he started the worlds second biggest digital distribution platform

being a top engineer and being a visionary are two different things, carmack's vision is restricted by his engineering. gabe is a designer.

I sometimes wonder about the alternate universe where Carmack got his way and after Quake 2 he got to make a full snowcrash-esque generalized "metaverse" product like he wanted to do next, but the rest of the company shot him down.

Why would a Mexican dislike President Trump? It doesn't make any sense. Don't all humans, and therefore all humans with any connection whatsoever to Mexico, perpetually browse forums for socially stunted young English-speaking guys all day and somehow (despite never leaving their computers) develop an extreme aversion to "SJWs" and Muslims? It just makes NO SENSE! John Romero must be misguided and a cuck, that must be the explanation.

>>
When did Paul Steed start with ID and why was he fired?
>>
>>4051286
Around '97. He was credited for working on Quake 2.

As for the firing, Adrian Carmack and Kevin Cloud did that because Steed was encouraging the development of Doom 3 rather than a potential new title. Steed was ambitious to work on a Doom sequel, while the two originators were growing bored of plans for another FPS title. John Carmack used Steed's leverage to convince others to work on an FPS title. As Carmack was untouchable, Steed was the next target.
>>
>>4051319
I kinda wonder what it had been like if we had an idtech 3 Doom 3.
>>

But the concepts of complex storylines and objectives existed in 1993. Id just didn't (doesn't) know how to make good games out of their tech demos.

Only good thing in Doom was E1 and most of E4. Rest of the game is boring as balls. Hell even E1 is boring as balls. Yes at the time it was highly influential and it's the most important because it was first but in 2017 it's an utterly boring game to play and I don't understand how kiddies here keep replaying it. Doom 2 is a billion times better and Doom will never reach the heights that 2 reaches. Far better gameplay, far better enemy roster, the SSG, far more variety of level design (in terms of scale, close encounters, verticality, puzzles). The only thing Doom does better is atmosphere and level detail. Doom 1 is undoubtedly prettier, but gameplay wise fuck me it's a snooze.

However even Doom 2 is shit compared to Plutonia, and the Doom community wads have far surpassed the levels of all the officially released games (except NRFTL, which is fucking incredible, although I wish it was longer thats what she said).
