shiritsu Justice gakuen: nekketsu seishun nikki 2 is a Japan-only updated version of Rival Schools' Evolution disc.

The main difference is that it's got the VN-like create-a-character "school life" mode that Crapcom didn't want to translate.

You get to choose which of the Rival schools to attend, get a handful of appearance options depending on that choice, then build your custom character's move set by going through the game mode.

Your choice of club/extra-curricular activity, lesson and mini-game results, sparring sessions with Sakura and friendship levels with the other playable characters determines how your custom character turns out.

Aside from that, it's also got a couple of new mini-games and playable characters (Ran the Newspaper Reporter and Nagare the Swimming Faggot).

I've always read the 'life sim eroge' as a concept flopped in Japan, both games came and went without a whimper yet found a good deal of success in the US and are 'classics' to English speaking players. True Love in particular is so unlike anything else, it's really satisfying compared to the choose-a-line style eroge eventually settled on.

Yes but Tokimeki Memorial is a dating sim with no porn, I'm talking specifically about those dating sim elements being in an eroge. It definitely seems like a fad that passed quickly, Welcome to Pia Carrot is another I've seen but they're few and far between.

I feel like the hentai is what made me play these games way back in the day, and now I just think they're hilariously written.

Can anyone recommend anything else that's in the realm of funny but enjoyable games like these? I've tried a few other similar games but they all feel more along the lines of just being straight hentai

Exactly, as nice as dithered 90s hentai is to look at (especially back then when it was harder to find) it's the writing that makes them stand out. True Love has an incredibly loose translation with Aussie slang everywhere but it somehow works.

I'd like to see more games from this era that might not have been translated get a translation now, but keep the goofy loose charm without resorting to memes or modern pop culture references.
