I think the MD's limitations gave it a lot more charm as a game console. You can almost instantly recognize a game as a MD game from just looking at a screenshot or listening to some music.

SNES has higher quality audio and a lot more colors, but that almost makes it more generic. About the only time a SNES game has that easily identifiable SNES feeling is when it's using Mode 7.

Lots of later consoles lack palette restrictions and display all the same colors as the SNES, so visually they'll look identical. Individual games and franchises can have their own style and you might be able to recognize those, but the console itself doesn't create any recognizable visual features.

And SNES is super heavy on samples for music. That completely destroys the console individuality you get from chip tunes.

For the MD; in Japan it was marketed as an AMERICAN console, sorta. The japanese TV Sonic commercials all feature english narrators (or have lines in english) and make sure to tell that Sonic is big in USA. He wasn't nearly as popular in Japan.
As for the 'tude, I don't think so, Sega's marketing in Japan was regular marketing, it didn't attack competitors that I can remember.
Closest to that is probably the Segata Sanshiro CMs where they imply the evil company that launches a missile and kills Segata is Sony (or Nintendo, but I think it's meant to be Sony)
