PS1 texture warping.
I would rather take that over the N64's forced VI blur

You don't know about the saturn lack of transparencies? Are you a fucking underaged RETARD?
>>
>>4037858
Games that can't use hardware transparencies using dithered transparencies is a textbook compromise, obviously.

These were design choices not compromises. True transparencies weren't even standard in the arcades let alone home consoles. What the fuck are you talking about?
>underaged RETARD
Oh... I see.
>>
>>4037869
>These were design choices not compromises.
It's a compromise in the sense they had to go with the closest they could to real transparency. I honestly don't know how to explain better than that.

>>
>>4037869
>True transparencies weren't even standard in the arcades let alone home consoles
They seemed standard enough for me on the SNES and Playstation, little Jimmy.
>>
>>4037869
There are a lot of underaged tards here, but dithering has been a compromise used to simulate extra colors since... forever. It's not just used for transparency, and it's definitely a compromise.
>>
>>4037875
too bad about the 3 sprites per screen limit on the snes
>>
>>4037878
It is a stylistic choice NOT a compromise in the same sense the genesis having to work with a fewer color pallette was a CHOICE to cheapen manufacture costs. You seem to be the child here.
>>
>>4037879
If you can't use google you need to get the fuck off 4chan. We aren't here to baby you.
>>
>>4037872
You guys (more likely children) don't understand what compromise means. Not having standards because they're literately (not the meme the actual word) unachievable isn't a compromise. That's a design choice.

By your logic anything not in the future is a compromise.
>>4037875
>snes
>true transparencies
Stop
>>4037878
That's not a compromise. Again you do not know what "compromise" means.
>>
The real tragedy is despite the Saturn taking every shortcut possible to cheapen hardware costs it STILL cost $200 more than the playstation on release.
>>
>>4037882
OP is clearly talking about CHOICES that simulate graphical effects that the hardware couldn't handle, or which would be too demanding. Dithering fits the bill.
"Compromise" is the wrong word, but we understand what OP meant.

I figured OP meant any outdated graphical effects, meaning things that have better alternatives now. Which is why flat shading, prerendered sprites, dithering, and PS1 texture warping are great answers.
Not sure why some of you dumbasses are getting so butthurt over his word choice when it's obvious what he meant.

Blimey, look at all this dithering in a Sega game, obviously this must be a COMPROMISE and not a DESIGN CHOICE to paint the waterfalls that way.
>>
>>4037892
>>4037898
In practice it works. A gross simplification though is it's just color tricks.

The software and hardware devs were very smart and resourceful.
>>4037904
That's color tricks by playing with the analog video. Again it's impressive the shit people came up with because they lacked true transparency capability.

COMPROMISE
[kom-pruh-mahyz]
noun
1.
a settlement of differences by mutual concessions; an agreement reached by adjustment of conflicting or opposing claims, principles, etc., by reciprocal modification of demands.
2.
the result of such a settlement.
3.
something intermediate between different things:
The split-level is a compromise between a ranch house and a multistoried house.
4.
an endangering, especially of reputation; exposure to danger, suspicion, etc.:
a compromise of one's integrity.

You FUCKING RETARDS don't know what a fucking compromise and a design choice is.
>>
>>4037912

>>
>>4037912

Oh shit look it's the definition OP was using. An effect used to simulate another effect that would be properly implemented later. Thanks anon!
>>
>>4037915
>>4037917
THAT IS *NOT* WHAT A COMPROMISE IS
>>
>>4037920
Yeah we all agree on that. We also know what OP meant. It's a good idea for a thread, too. Stop being so butthurt.
>>
>>4037918
>An effect used to simulate another effect that would be properly implemented later
It's not simulating anything, it's just using checkered pattern colors as an in between two different colors. This has nothing to do with hardware compromise, dithering is not implemented by hardware.

That's some impressive mental gymnastics there kid. So ALL video games are comprises since the future will always have greater capabilities. Actually most everything in life is compromise with tard logic like that.

>>4037923

Jesus christ, what's happened? /vr/ wasn't like this even a month ago, when did all the redditswine move in?
>>
>>4037924
Are you trolling or legitimately retarded? We can do true transparencies and smooth gradients now. That's the end goal. Simulated transparencies are a compromise that can used when that end-goal isn't attainable. They can also be used for purely stylistic purposes.

I guess we could say VR is a compromise because we can't literally build the holodeck, but you're being needlessly pedantic. The word works just fine. We regularly use the word 'compromise' to mean an imperfect solution used when a perfect solution isn't possible. That's what "concession" means, which is used in both definitions posted here.

>>4037928
Who ever said "hardware comprise" except you? "in between" matches the definition of compromise posted here >>4037912 >something intermediate between different things

>>4037939
No. No. Stop.

When you say compromise in this usage that means you gave up a level of standard for some reason. These game hardware and software devs didn't give up a level of standard. They made the standard. This is something truly unique to retro video games.

You're using the word completely wrong and are ignorant to the negative connotation it brings. Just ignorant in general it seems.
>>
>>4037945
I've been there at times, but not regularly. usually I go to subreddits that are directly relevant to what I'm looking for rather than browsing randomly. I was well aware of 4chan lite on there, I'll take your word for the rest.

there is no need to separate what would normally be an entire paragraph into thin sentences

The PlayStation itself was compromised, at least in earlier hardware revisions, as it had 5-bit per channel colour output vs 8-bit per channel of later models.

I imagine Capcom made the decision to maintain consistency across all hardware in circulation. They also likely used blue debug consoles for development and playtesting rather than green ones.
>>
Somewhat similar to the dithering, I do kind of like that flickering visible/invisible way of faking transparency, especially for flame or energy type effects.
