I grew up on Squaresoft RPGs and somehow missed Dragon Quest completely till recently. They are charming as fuck.

Recently I have got really into the Breath of Fire series. The first two games are a little rough around edges but BoFIII and BoFIV are great jrpgs. I highly recommend them.

Listen to what >>4039679 said. The fan translations are much better then the official translation it got on the ds. The ps2 version has orchestrated music, 3d environments and character models, and allows for four party members making the game a bit easier.
