If it intimidates you a lot, go ahead and use the Retroarch version of Mednafen. It's just download the the core in the program itself and then you load it up.

I use real hardware for games I own. Usually my PS2 or PS3 so I can use composite/HDMI.
For stuff I don't own I use a Raspberry Pi and a PS3 controller. Good times.
