I think it's more of a stigma that people think that those that watch anime are shut ins, or neets as we know them. For a lot of people in their 40's/50's or older they probably have no real idea what exactly it but just the immediate idea of "adult who watches foreign cartoons" sounds immature to them. Animation for adults is still kind of looked down upon by older people as well as the fact that Japan has kind of of a "quirky" reputation giving the idea of immaturity.

The real annoying people though are the "ironic weebs", like the assholes who use cropped hentai or a anime girl with a "MAGA" hat on social media sites. It's these idiots that people see online and think immediately that they are immature, and they're right. Sadly they don't know that anime has a pretty general audience. I admit I'm a pretty big normalfag with anime but even stuff like Ghibli, Lupin III, and Tezuka interest me and I enjoy reading/watching them and a few other things. A lot of Japanese culture in general reflects an anime influence, all these intros use anime styles. For anyone even remotely interested in Japanese pop culture anime is enevitable, and some just think that anyone who watches it all is like these immature idiots who think they're hilarious.

I think though that "nerd culture" though is becoming more acceptable. I really think within around 20 years stuff like videogames and animation won't be as looked down upon.
