Why didn't Plok ever catch on? It certainly had the charm.

This is a blue board which means that it's for everybody (Safe For Work content only). If you see any adult content, please report it.

Maybe it got Battleborned? I can't remember if some really good shit came out in september 93

Can't you just said it got overshadowed?

>>4033393
it got hoodwinked

It was BUSHWHACKED.
>>
>>4033554
in all honesty that was the only word that came to my head

I've had battleborn on the mind
>>
I want to say bad character design on the box but that's like every single video game until 5th generation.
>>
>>4033641
Plok's character design isn't very marketable in general. He looks like a kiddified executioner.
>>
>>4033645
That's probably a good explanation. Rayman has a much friendlier design for marketing.
>>
>>4033393
Because you diddle yourself at night.

I saw this game in a magazine, thought it looked great, and bought it.
I don't know why not many people bought it (although I'm not even sure about its sales number, judging by OP I guess it didn't do well), maybe it didn't get enough marketing, I saw it on a vidya magazine, but unlike other games, it wasn't advertised on TV (that I can remember). It also wasn't a stablished IP.
The difficulty might also have turned down some people, around world 2 the difficulty spikes like crazy. Maybe another one of those "rental" deals.
>>
Non-licensed platformers didn't sell well in 1993. The sales charts are full of fighting games and platformers based off cartoons. Or Bubsy, but Bubsy's trick was to act like a classic cartoon character.

Also, Plok's character design sucks and his game isn't that great. And I'm saying this as a fan.

Would Plok would have been successful if Nintendo went and fully published it? Maybe at the very least it would been remembered more.
>>
>>4034003

Two other issues could be that the only great part of the game (the soundtrack) was also the hardest to market, and that it was an 8 megabit game in an time where magazines cared deeply about cartridge sizes.

It's possible. The game sold well in Europe, the one place where Nintendo published it. Especially Germany.

No it didn't, it looks like generic eurojank. You can literally look at it and tell it's European, that's how eurojank it is.
>>
>>4033393
The hunt for the fleas is the worst part of the game. This is why many people aren't too fond of the game outside of the actual character designs.

The game is insanely hard for such a cutesy-looking platformer, and it doesn't start you off with any continues, so a game over early on means starting right back at the beginning. I can see a kid getting frustrated with it after 20 minutes.
>>
>>4034229

That's literally what Child's Play mode is for.
>>
>>4033393
It didn't play that well and the final world was just a bunch of vehicular gimmicks

According to someone on /vr/

>I remember in Retro gamer a profile of one of the devs, Software Creations, who were smack dab in the middle of Manchester during the "Madchester" Music boom. They would code by day then get wasted by night and UK Publishers didn't care as long as they shipped product. One designer even had to go to rehab to get off cocaine and it put off several visiting 1st party. Especially Nintendo who were looking to buy a UK studio and were really impressed by a 2D Platformer they made that eventually became Plok They settled on Rareware instead and just contracted them out for a Super Scope Six game.

I don't have Retro Gamer, but there is this post by Ste Pickford (co-creator of Plok). https://twitter.com/stepickford/status/857614551843577856

Super Scope 6 as in the game included with the scope? I thought that was developed by R&D1 in Japan, in fact I'm pretty sure of it, unless you mean another Super Scope game.

Because it was fucking shit? Whenever someone tells me they liked plok, I assume they're retarded.

>>4034890
Tin Star is easily the best Super Scope game while Plok is just yet another piece of shovelware shit with Tim Follin music. There should rather be a thread asking why Tin Star didn't catch on.

I don't like the first volume, but it's gotten better.

I did get a good laugh out of this one, though.

Game was too hard, main character was weird-looking.
Music was amazing, though.

Hard Gay 101's article on it was just released. Unsurprisingly, it's fairly short and a third of it is spent on the soundtrack.

Well that was an unexciting read. It does indirectly reinstate the point however that Plok would be more forgettable if it wasn't for the music.

It's strange how Plok always looks so good in 2D but is consistently crap in 3D.
>>
Part of that's because a lot of animations and poses that look good on him in 2D, would make his limbs clip through his body in 3D. For instance, where would you put his legs during a walking animation? Rayman's limbs are farther away, so he can avoid that.

Then again, there's not that many 2D platformer mascots that handled 3D gracefully.

>>4037817
Plok really is a difficult character in terms of anatomy. Some of his art on the Pickford bros' site have inconsistencies, such as his shirt (mostly the pecs), and the shape of his eyes.
Though the walk animation issue could be fixed by making Plok slightly elliptical, then maybe one of his legs could stay behind it at all times
>>
I tried this game and didnt see what the big deal is, though I didnt go very far.

Can someone tell me what they like about the game? Im not trying to be a contrarian shitter here, I'm honestly curious what people like about the game.

For me, it's the visuals, soundtrack and the surreal storyline. The bosses are well-done, and there's some secret areas if you know where to look. But mostly, nostalgia.

The game gets a bit better when you reach Akrillic and get the amulet. To make it easier, you can use the bonus levels to warp to Plok's house while skipping most of Cotton Island. I'd understand if you didn't like it, though. Just in terms of pure platforming, it doesn't hold a candle to Nintendo's first-party stuff.
>>
>>4038113
>surreal storyline
It had a storyline as surreal as Super Mario, aka just your typical retro platformer storyline.
>>
>>4036763
big deal, it's an opinion piece

that doesn't make HG101 a bad place to find weird stuff to play and read about developer history
>>
It just felt boring and repetitive to me.
Especially fighting fleas was tedious due to their invincibility after each hit and when they're still in their eggs.
>>
typical european game

great music and graphics, shit gameplay and design
>>
>>4038164

You can just use the amulet's buzzsaw to kill them in 1 hit.
