I have to agree. It's all memes, you see, in the original sense of the word (as in "a idea or concept that replicates and spreads").

Those games had some very good memes in them. It becomes difficult to argue for the singular importance of a few games when most of their content and ideas are themselves derived from previous cultural works. However, when new technical challenges which come with adapting established gameplay concepts to a 3D environment arose, these two games did some stellar groundwork.
