I love FMV games. Even if the game itself is shitty, the game can redeem itself with good cheesy 90s FMV. Both Phantasmagoria games are absolutely shit games, but if you can overlook them as game and see them as interactive movies instead, they become instant classics.

Marathon and Marathon 2. (yes, I was Macfag once).

Good FPS action, but not why I liked them.
They also had a very good storyline and interesting missions each level that supported the story.
I felt that feeling of "being somewhere else" usually ascribed to RPGs.

Sure, Unreal did all that (and better), but Marathon was first by a number of years.

NBA Jam: TE. It's as arcade as a sports game gets. I don't even like basketball, but I burned so many hours on this with my homies.

I loved that shit in the arcades, and I don't care about sports or sports games.

>>4019704
I actually replayed this a few weeks ago. It's okay for a basic basketball game if you wanna play an NBA game in a different flavor, but there's little else to it. Certain characters are broken as fuck, as you said, and I still don't know how to work half the minigames.
>>

I fucking love Harvester. Absolutely hilarious, and just when you're getting sick of puzzles the game turns into a gory psuedo side scrolling fighting game. As far as I'm concerned its myriad of faults make it more entertaining.
>>
>>4020749
I too love Harvester. From strictly a game point of view it's a terrible game, but it's still entertaining as fuck. I started to play it without knowing much else about it than it being a point and click adventure, and it turned out to be the best thing I had ever witnessed.

This game is inferior in every way to later ww2 vertical shooters. So why do I keep coming back to it? The cool name? The pontoon plane? The awesome engine sound when a plane swoops down on you? The backgrounds in certain levels that were probably drawn by IREM artists?
>>
>>4020914
>strictly a game point of view it's a terrible game, but it's still entertaining as fuck
This is exact how I feel about Harvester. I don't like the fighting gameplay, but the adventuring that comes before that is fun enough and the setting is very entertaining weird small town Americana - sort of like the much later Deadly Premonition. I wonder, did the developers realize this is how their game would be enjoyed for years to come? Was Harvester supposed to be a bit of a kusoge from the start?

One of the best jRPGs for NES, hands down. It looks like FFIV - or even better - but was made on simplier console. Something between fantasy and steam punk, like FF VI. Ninja Gaiden style cut-ins. Memorable music and characters. Even whole locations. Neverending Story style plot-twist. Such a shame SNES came out, and people didn't bothered with outdated NES game.
>>
>>4020975

Basically you control a man who traverses these huge rectangular slabs which seem to be floating in an empty void in space

Rows of cubes rise from the surface and start flipping towards your character in different patterns. You have to make your way through the cubes while taking out as many cubes in as few moves at possible using bombs that you place on the surface.

You can only place one at a time and then detonate it, but you have to be quick, and if you can be really quick or out smart the game you can get them done in less moves than the game intends you too and you get nigger bonuses.

It sounds simple, maybe hard to describe, everyone who likes puzzlers should definitely play it. The best thing is the swooping orchestral soundtrack. I also love the creepy atmosphere and the announcers voice ringing "perfect!" After slaughtering puzzles.

Also if you don't solve the puzzle correctly you're eventually pushed off into the abyss.

It's pretty great.

Almost anything on a Sega console. Even though I was a Nintendo home, I convinced my cousins to get other systems and we could always swap systems just to play more. However, whenever there's a Sega Saturn thread here on /vr/, without fail there's at least 3-4 posts immediately claiming it was a pointless system without any worthwhile exclusives compared to its competitors. Same goes for Genesis games pictured here: mention Castle of Illusion and get slapped down by superior Capcom Disney games, bring up the 8meg Strider port everyone will praise Run Saber, Altered Beast just gets thrown in the trash as a short arcade port, etc. I still love the games despite many /vr/ posters constant hate; I do love the games those haters mention too, but I do not see why everything devolves to some system debate.

Fuck yeah! Bought this game purely based on the band alone, game is quite enjoyable too!

>>4016891
This game is so expensive. I want it, but I have to settle for emulation. Very fun stuff.

>>4017146
I had to settle for the Saturn's Tempest 2000 because I do not have a Jaguar, and I want to see and hear the differences X3 brings (didn't get it back then because I had to stretch my limited funds).

I think the Castlevania themed one made it to US smartphones, but the pixel art is a mess (inconsistent).

It's this game and XBLIG's Vorpal are my favorite Mexican developed games.

Super advanced for the time

An RPG where you progress and have to find the proper "gifts" for the sphinx, which you can obtain from temples, killing bandits, trading with merchants, etc.

you control your guy with the first controller and your inventory / trading with the second controller

I didn't have the manual so the whole game was actually pretty mysterious

I got it after I had just watched indiana jones for the first time

still have good memories of it and like to replay it every now and then

it's a tricky symbol matching game at heart though

natural selection (half life 1 mod)

imagine counterstrike with two asymmetrical teams (aliens and space marines) where games could last anywhere between 5 or 30 minutes.

it had everything
>ressources (gas)
>buildings
>research
>cloaking, silent movement
>flight, teleport, climbing any wall and walking through tight ventilation shafts (that the space marines could use too once they researched jetpacks)
>powerful weapons that can be bought (space marines) or evolved into (aliens)
>base defences
>humans had a commander who would place buildings from a top down view, making it a RTS for him
>crazy good music, sfx and ambiance
>good ammount of serious maps, lots of silly fun maps

the biggest and most expensive alien was called ONOS and it was a fat, armored cow that could sprint scarily fast. it could eat a space marine if it got close enough, literally. if you played space marine and got eaten, you would have to stare at a moving picture of an anus for ~25 seconds until you were devoured and died. you could however be saved if the onos was killed fast enough; that is why space marines had to stick together.

mane i miss having a game i so wholeheartedly enjoy and simply can not get enough of. few games ever came close to this for me.

It's a turn based strategy game where 7 alien races with different attributes try to conquer the last remaining planet in the galaxy.

The sequel was shit though.

I find PMD cuts too much of what makes Roguelikes interesting so a lot of the game feels like a slog to me. Etrian Mystery Dungeon was pretty good, but the original Shiren the Wanderer hits a real sweet spot. It has just enough persistence that it can give a sense of progression and making beating an initial run easier. But a normal playthrough without maxed weapons and a stockpile of items is quite challenging.

I also like that a successful game is also only a few hours long which means that failing a run (which will happen a lot) isn't a huge loss. And encourages the player to just try again and modify their approach some.

It's one of the things some of the big roguelikes miss a sometimes that's part of what I liked about the original. Powder, my possible favorite roguelike is like this as well.

Nothing compares to vegas dream. It gets right to the point and you can instantly start playing but there is a lot of charm in the random events that happen and the character designs. All around a solid fun game to just turn on when you're bored.

GP World for the SG-1000.
Sure, it's a fairly simple Pole Position style racing game, but it's just satisfying as hell to play,
You don't explode outta nowhere if you bump an opponent and aren't going too fast (you do with scenery, although that's likely the game just not having a separate stop and then slide back onto the track animation), handling is fairly easy to get to grips with, the presentation is fantastic for the machine, and there's a track editor. Great stuff. Some of the tracks are a little obnoxious and you have to brake quite a bit more than you'd expect around certain tight corners, but it's overall pretty cool.

It's a lot nicer than the pseudo-sequel World Grand Prix on the Master System (which features a less polished track editor, it feels like a Hang-On re-skin with weird handling, opponent racers are much more annoying, useful info like how much time you have left or the course record isn't shown on screen, etc).

Actually im making a framework in game maker to make a game with a similar feel ,faster but not rts fast . im gonna add magic and fantasy settings only you need infraestructure to have magic units like the original. I dubbed it "Legends of Bugfest" because thats what it is right now. Wont have a working beta at least in 4 years but to anyone interested i will post the beta in vr first. Because lets face it. If anyone wants a sequel to this type of game or a decent Homm they will have to make it themselves

This simply isn't true. The illusion games are as good or in the same league as Capcom's offerings.
The discussion is mostly the aladdin capcom vs virgin thing.
