What is the best way to run this game? I tried running it in

DOS version - install.exe will create dune.bat or comm.bat
make sure bat file has "SDB2207" (for SoundBlaster)

I tried to play the CD version on DosBox several times but at some point the game would glitch out, would skip sections and become clearly unplayable. There's either some compatibility problem or the version is bugged.

PCEMU is the best, assuming you know how to set up an ibm pc.

However keep in mind that both Dosbox and PCEMU uses GODAWFUL bad OPL emulation, and Dune is the one game where it really, really shows. Some of the tunes are fine, but some are extremely bad.

PCEmu can do Adlib Gold emulation too with the surround module, but unfortunately it has sever clipping issues.

Sega CD and Amiga versions might be easier to emulate, but Amiga version has different music (and it is missing some of the best tracks). Sega CD uses the FMV version, where you can't skip animations, which makes it feel like a much slower game. The YM2612 renditions of the songs are okay, but not as good as the PC ones.

This thread reminds me that I should make a backup of my old IBM 330s hard drive. I keep it around specifically for old games. It runs Heroes 2 and Dune like a champ, way better than Dosbox ever will be able to.

Amiga version has lower colour count, worse framerate, and has a grand total of THREE music tracks, two of which are MOD versions from the PC, and one which is new but not really that good of a track. And none of them sound significantly better than the OPL versions.
Oh and that version has no sound effects.

So no, the Amiga version is not better, especially not for music.

Well I'm only comparing it to what I see on youtube (checked multiple videos to make sure), but the intro seems to lag a lot right off the bat when it zooms in on the planet. On my 486 it was super smooth, no lag anywhere. Same for when they show the sandworm right after that, and the mosaic effects look slower too. Hell, the larger facial animations look laggy too.

Some other effects are missing too, like the water rippling is only shown when Stilgar is not on the screen, the game doesn't zoom in on Chani's eyes, the war scene shows half the amount of sprites and they move slower, the Sardaukar next to Fatso Harkonnen slides in a very choppy manner, I could go on and on.

The scene with Sting and the Sardaukar looks laughably bad too due to the low colour count.

And the intro isn't even synced to the music unlike the PC versions.
