I'm playing through the PC-98 games right now.

I tried a bit of both, and prefer the windows era, but i am terrible at both. I got to Elis my first try in HRtP. Died so many times because i didn't know there were bombs in the first game, I just stopped there and went to check out the other 4 on the 98. I'd probably be more invested in the series if I played more games in the Shmup genre.

I've only played Imperishable Night because my friend said I couldn't one CC it on Lunatic for 200 dollars by the end of the month.

I was 200 dollars richer by the end of that week.

That being said I really like the fan games like Touhouvania and such. Those are really well made and much better than the bullet hells in my opinion. I really love the music from the games, it's usually the only part I actually check out.

I love this sprite anon.

Anyway I can't play the series. I tried the shooter ones thinking they'd be easy since so many casuals love the series, but they're pretty hard. I can see now the majority of fans just like to fap to the girls and have never played the games, most likely. It was fun the bit I played but I'll never make it to the end, let alone 1cc it. Still, impressive it was all made by just one guy.

I got fucked in stage 3 the first time I played th6 but once I put some mind to learn the patterns it become easier.

It's not different to many shmups meaning it's going straight into the boss and onto the next stage in a straight line, it's definitely less generic than "city with tanks" and "destroy tokyo's tower for a score item"
Also, spellcards are pretty creative, timeout ones being specially nice.

I think it's okay for 2hu to have memes since half of them are gameplay related.

You can't scroll the screen to the sides, and most of the patterns are static ie they are not aimed at you. Also bosses have this annoying delay where they do a little animation before doing their attacks, those seconds add up, you know.

Just listen to some Music Arranges on Youtube while scrolling some Toewhores porn, that's a much better use of your time than trying to get into the shitty games.

I've only played the more recent games. 1ccd 6-8 and 10.

I want to play more of this series but I don't want to be that guy who claims to be a shmup fan but only plays touhou.

Playing Ikaruga now. It's pretty fun but it's quite fast, and I kinda prefer the slower speed of touhou.

It's a shame so many of the most acclaimed shmups are Japan exclusive arcade machines. MAME is kind of a bitch to configure.

Aimed streams of bullets don't have any kind of difficulty into them, fixed patterns aren't different but in touhou they deviate from the classic old spiral or spread.
Admittedly there's only three types of bullets, aimed, fixed and random and all of them can be called bullshit if you don't enjoy them.

Yeah, at times.
Not so much in the stages themselves and it's not like streaming through aimed bullets that will never touch you if you aren't zigzagging into them for no reason is less mechanic.
As I say, both types of bullets can be called bullshit if you don't enjoy them.
But for the pattern creativity touhou is already a step more relevant than other games with way more budget and better models since all of them require memorization and practice not matter if they are static or aimed.

Are you a Shmup pro or something? Picking up a game, playing the hardest difficulty and clearing it in one week is pretty impressive, I don't think it would be possible if you didn't had experience in the genre, even though Touhou 8 is one of the easiest in the series.

How do you get these games to run well on modern systems? I downloaded one, can't remember the title but it was number 7 or 8. It played at like 6000fps and the game ran a good 100x faster than it was supposed to.

Also, do the games have controller support or are you stuck with the arrow keys/wasd?

Meme game. Not trying to be a contrarian, but you'd still be just as much of a faggot saying youre a shmup fan that likes touhou and Ikaruga as you'd be saying your a shmup fab that only plays touhou.

Try out Dodonpachi, its sort of the grabdfather of the bullet hell thing. I'd also check out thunder force 3 to see how you like horis. Ikaruga is good but it's gimmicky and not a good representation of shmups in general, toss in its cult status among people who don't even play shmups and your guaranteeing yourself a one way visit to faggotville if you don't broaden your horizons a bit.

Yeah, it doesn't seem that bad. The worst PC-98 game for me has been PoDD.

I don't know if I just didn't understand something about that game or what, but beating Yumemi felt like pure luck.

Somehow PoDD is the only game in the series that feels kind of unnecessary nowadays, you can have a better "competitive shmup" experience with Touhou 9 or Twinkle Star Sprites, none of the original characters appear in the PC-98 sequels, too.

The soundtrack is very impressive, though.

Yeah. Great animation, but I don't know anything about Pixiv so I have no idea if it's even possible to extract it as a proper gif instead of jpegs. I couldn't find any good solutions with a quick google or by checking the page source.
