This is a thread for those who are exploring retro games, that is, the people who weren't there at the time but want to play the classic games. How are your discoveries going on? In my case, i'm interested in jrpgs (Right now playing Treasure Hunter G). I want to jump into the psx, but there are so many games to play.

I think I'm in the same boat. The only experience I've had with sega before about three months ago was us having a master system when I was very little. Parents made me sell that and ever since Segas were just these weird black machines I'd see maybe once every 8 years or so

couple months ago I got me a sega mega drive(did my research to make sure I got a good one) and with youtube gameplay footage and very small tastes thru emulation I've picked games to buy and play

so far I'm very happy with what I've discovered
kinda wish I'd kept the master system
>>
>>3998789
My first system was a GameCube when I was 4 or 5. I was a kid with no money so I mainly stuck to getting games my friends were playing like Madden and Zelda and stuff. I got my older brothers N64 in like 2003 when he saw me getting really into it. It kinda sparked my interest and made me research this stuff. I got myself an NES and a PS1 at a flea market a year or two later with my mom. I'm still looking for those "hidden gems" I didn't get to experience. I'm really glad I found /vr/ to show me of these.

Thank you, dudes.

Catalina master race!

I've always been a Nintendo kid for most of my life (first system was a SNES, last a N3DS), and only decided to give the PS1 a try a couple years back.
I'm big into JRPGs, and, to be honest, I still have to play a single bad one in this damn console.
Grandia, Final Fantasy IX, Vagrant Story, Suikoden II, Breath of Fire IV, Tales of Eternia, Wild Arms, Parasite Eve, Xenogears, it's been amazing so far and I still have so many to try.
>>
>>3998789
In 2006 I was getting bummed out with modern games so I went and bought a bunch of old PS1 games.

Playing Parasite Eve, Dino Crisis, Valkyrie Profile, and a bunch of other games I saw ads for as a kid, but never got to try.

It's been great. I ended up buying enough games before the prices got absurdly high to last me about 10 years or so, and thats excluding the fact I have flashcarts for TG-16, N64, SNES, NES and Sega Genesis.

I have too many JRPG's to clear, which is the worst aspect of these old games. Thankfully, being smarter then I was as a kid makes it a lot easier and faster to get through. It used to take me like 30 hours to beat FF2, but I cleared it in 12 hours a few days ago. But I'm not really looking forward to the Breath of Fire gauntlet that I have to clear one day.

I also never drop games anymore. I see them through to the end.

Man I should really try to get a hold of Uncharted Waters: New Horizons again. I have such fond memories of it. My parents didn't allow video games in the house until a few years into the PS2's life, so I started playing catch up and almost exclusively played older games.
>Obsessed with Sega games
>Really want RPG's for my Genesis
>Only game store that has older games is a Slackers store at a huge mall that's about a 45 minute drive away
>Only really get to go maybe once or twice a month
>All their shit is overpriced so I usually end up just making a mental note of what I'd buy if I had more money
>Hear about a new used game store opening up downtown about 10 minutes away from me
>Owner is cool as shit, always excited to see someone younger into the same games
>We're both huge Sega and RPG fans
>He always sets things aside for me and either gives them to me or gives me a hugely discounted price
>Sells me New Horizons for $10 even though it has a price tag of $40 on it
>Get home and play it all night and fake sick the next day so I can keep playing
>We start learning about the age of exploration around the same time and I surprise the teacher with my knowledge
This theme never fails to make me feel warm and nostalgic.

Born in '98, but it's becoming increasingly clear to me that the fifth generation consoles house probably my favourite titles of the medium. The PS1's library in particular is just so varied and expansive that it's easy to find a ton of great games.

Right now I'm playing Silent Bomber, as recommended by another thread. It's a great time!

Uncharted Waters is criminally underrated.
>>
>>3998789
I am getting a super famicom soon (still unsure if the original power adapter will fry it on US power). Had a snes as a kid with a few games (SMW, LTTP, KI, MM7) and a ps1 with Crash games, MM8, and spyro. Parents sold them as i got older to afford newer consoles for me. I really want to play a lot that i missed on the snes/sfc as I have not played almost any rpgs on the system aside from earthbound. I also want to possibly get a saturn, dreamcast, or maybe a ps1 again.

I'm not new to retro consoles (born in '91) but I don't know anything about old computers. My father always bought toasters and titles like Grim Fandango or MS-DOS Aladdin never worked or were too slow.

Now, with a modern PC, I'm making up for the lost time and trying some games for western and japanese computers. MSX Xanadu: Dragon Slayer II is my next stop.
>>
>>3998789

I just finished Earthbound the other day after several false starts spanning 22 years. Last month I finished Marvelous.

RN I'm digging into Links Awakening DX, and FF5 (both games I've false started over the years) and Fire Emblem 4.

I used to never guidefag my way through games on a matter of principle, but I realized I'm an adult with a kid and simply do not have to waste hours on something I can google.

Props,, UW NH is my favorite game of all time. /v/ and/vr/ never had threads about it, I would like to think I started the trend.
>>
>>3999796
Damn shame Costa del Sol never got translated.

I like digging through all kinds of platforms, but expecially Commodore and PS1. They got many interesting games.

Captain Blood

Also born in 98, grew up with a GBA and Wii virtual console so I had a little exposure. 16-bit is my favorite era

No interest in buying old games, I'm happy with my snes, Genesis and pc engine flash carts. I do have an n64 "collection" though
>>
>>3998789
I've been interested in playing the Madou Monogatari games, but, as far as I know, they weren't localized and fantranslated.

The reason why I like to visit /vr/ (or in some rare cases, /v/) is because threads about games that I don't know show up often, "recommendations threads" are my favorites, since a lot of games are mentioned in a short space.

I'm pretty open to any genre, I really like to explore things that I don't know anything about, or playing games that I never tried in a series that I already liked.

Not really a unknown one, but I've been pretty into the SMT series recently, I like Atlus games in general, too.
>>
>>4002542
Pretty sure a decent number of them got fan-translations.
At least I remember playing some in English.
>>
>>3999459
You should replay it on the SNES sometime. It's arguably the superior port of the game.
>>
>>4002636
Didn't NH use a special chip to improve sound quality?
>>
>>3999575
The sequel, New Horizons, might be the best trading sim ever made.
>>
>>4002641
If by special chip you mean the SNES' built-in audio chip then yes. The SNES port used SNES audio to great effect whereas the Genesis port sounds anemic.
>>
>>4002636
DOS port is good too

>>4002658

So, are we playing Uncharted Waters Online or what?
>>
>>4002882
Holy shit, I wasn't even aware this existed. I'm downloading it right now. Looks like there's some pricy DLC but hopefully the vanilla game is good enough without needing to use money.
>>
>>4002882
Been playing since NA launch. The game itself is fun but it's all about finding a company of people you can stand playing with. The community at large is kind of retarded.
>>
>>4002832
The DOS port of UW1 is the superior port. Not so much for New Horizons.

They're not incredibly common but NH gets some good threads around here every once in a while. It's been in my top 10 since I first rented and later bought it as a kid. One day I will get around to recruiting this scurvy motherfucker.

I never had consoles as a kid so the majority of the games are new to me. I've played a lot of the NES library, and realized what a great system it truly is. Now I'm getting more into the Mega Drive, which I'm slightly nostalgic about since I played a few of the games with cousins as a kid, like Altered Beast - and goddamn this game is difficult, we couldn't get farther than stage 3.
One thing that I've realized is that the 32x had a number of really great games and ports. Everyone seems to hate it, and I guess it was faulty and expensive at the time, but I sure love emulating it - Virtua Racing Deluxe, Virtua Fighter, Star Wars Arcade, After Burn Space Harrier, Knuckles Chaotix...
>>
>>4004607
Too bad once you're powerful enough to recruit him, you don't need him.
>>
>>3999459
by chance are you located in central missouri, anon? That sounds a lot like my current situation, sans new used game store
>>
>>4004812
At the time of that story I actually was. Festus MO to be exact. Garbage useless town full of people going nowhere in life, glad I got out years ago and have lived in way better places since then. Never want to go back to MO unless it's to the Ozarks.
The game store I was talking about was Game Monster, no idea if it's still around though. I feel for you, finding older games in MO is a nightmare.

How come only some of the Japanese computers have voice acting but not the overseas ones?
>>
>>4011562
Not really an answer but the Japanese market always seemed like suckers for voice work and those drama CDs that came with every game in the 90s.
